By the likes of you, the country stands tall and proud,
And blooms with luminous knowledge, overflowing.
You imprinted souls upon learning while they were young,
With a test of truth that no other test can rival.
You paved for them in knowledge a path of eloquence,
And a path of self-sacrifice, as if you were Haydar (Ali).
The provinces of Algeria have granted you a sanctity,
A supreme honor of which you are most worthy.
In every guided delegation, there is a call for you,
And in every crowded gathering, a pulpit awaits you.
Your pen in exposition is sharper than blades,
And more decisive than judgments whenever it is unsheathed.
Your lesson in exegesis is more delicious than the harvest,
And more splendid than a lush garden, and more dazzling.
You have completed the Book of God, the completion of a scholar,
Insightful, for whom the difficult is easily solved.
How much successful understanding you possess in the Quran,
And how much liberated speech you have within the Quran.
You struck a torch of wisdom from the Quran,
By which the subtle secret is illuminated and seen.
You clarified through the Quran the merit of a civilization,
Which Chosroes acknowledged and to which Caesar submitted.
You resembled Jamal al-Din (al-Afghani) in his insights,
As if Jamal al-Din were depicted within you.
And you resembled (Muhammad) Abduh in the jurisprudence of Sharia,
So were you he, or is Abduh being resurrected in you?
Repeat, O Ibn Badis, the discourse and reveal it,
With your favors by which you are preferred.
Constantine took pride that her delegations came to you,
Gathering within her for goodness and guidance.
Delegations of peace, not delegations of hostility,
Preaching contentment therein and bringing glad tidings.
Offering a greeting to Abdelhamid,
Like the flowers of the hills, or even more fragrant.
And a congratulation from it on the completion of an exegete,
Of speech above which no other interpreter can rise.
Glorious intervals rising like stars,
By which the bewildered finds the path to truth.
And scriptures from the Generous God, noble,
Purified, containing purified speech.
Abdelhamid established proofs for us,
Of its abundant knowledge that cannot be confined.
He clarified the guidance therein for those who seek guidance,
And drove the remembrance home for those who remember.
He has approached fifty years of age, tirelessly,
In diligence, neither complaining nor showing vexation.
He spent a quarter-century spreading knowledge, patient,
Over obstacles that usually cannot be endured.
Raised in the shade of happiness, advancing,
Devoted to knowledge, his person respected and esteemed.
In a lofty tree of glory belonging to 'Al-Mu'izz',
Above the groves, its branch is solid, not to be broken.
Constantine, shake with joy and rapture,
For you are a frontier opening for the brave.
You are a destination for noble deeds to be aimed at,
And you are a house of sciences administering them.
You are a manifestation of nature to be beheld,
And a lookout from which the universe is viewed.
Your plants are basil, your land is paradise,
Your rock is coral, and your water is Kawthar.
Upon your supreme mountain are huge bridges,
By which the valley is crossed to reach you.
In your great houses are many monuments,
If one monument falls, a new one rises vigorously.
In your protected shade are magnificent temples,
Venerated, wherein rites are magnified.
O Mosque, shining like a lighthouse,
In it, the truth is illuminated for those who seek light.
O Mosque founded on knowledge and piety,
And still populated with preaching and guidance.
A house where God honors those in its courtyard,
And God humiliates and shames those who are arrogant.
Reveal the pearls arranged purely within you,
And the precious gems spread in your spacious grounds.
A pouring rain of Ibn Badis fell upon you,
So you are quenched by it, green like your name (Al-Akhdar).
I see the flourishing Al-Azhar defined within you,
As Al-Mu'izz and Jawhar used to protect it.
As if, on the day of the completion, you are a paradise on earth,
Opened up, its rivers bursting forth.
Peace be upon the knowledge sought within you,
Peace be upon the glory mentioned within you.
Peace be upon the lesson to which one goes early,
Coming to it from the deep ravine and attending.
Peace be upon the people who were guided by it,
To the verse of 'The People' (An-Nas) which appears in it.
Peace be upon the second of the two Rabi's,
Like the first of them, the most luminous in the year's months.
Peace be upon the 'College of the People,' for it,
Is surrounded by the partisans of peace and guarded.
Peace be upon elders who meet there upon goodness,
And youth who stay awake for benevolence.
O gathering, the likes of which is no gathering today,
Containing a company, the likes of which is no company today.
In it are many white and black robes,
And in it are heads covered and bare.
Your counterpart elevates the country and rises high,
And your like attains the desire and triumphs.
I benefit you with speech that is not fabricated,
And I give you sincere advice that is not denied.
Connect with the pure Arabs and protect their tongue,
For you descend from their loins.
And walk in the path of the Rightly Guided upon guidance,
For every path other than theirs is a stumbling block for you.
They are the model of creation by which one is guided,
And they are God's chosen elite that does not become turbid.
They are my high ideals, by whose grace,
I boast over all mankind and take pride.
Contemplate the Book of God if you are worthy of it,
For the true people of God's Book are those who contemplate.
Enrich yourself with it and bring forth intimacy, blooming,
From eternity, which no instrument on earth can mimic.
Make a covenant with the Quran and refuse to change,
Do you not see that the Quran does not change?
Turn away from the character that is despised therein,
And accept the character that is praised therein.
And advance upon the best endeavors, sacrificing,
And do not be afraid or cautious in them.
If you are the Party of God in secret and in public,
Then trust that the Party of God must be victorious.
Trust that Islam possesses many lions' dens,
If a lion is absent from them, another lion takes his place.
Trust that in the land of Algeria is a nation,
That facilitates the striving for glory and marches on.
Trust that history has a deferred judgment,
And how often a delayed judgment has abrogated previous ones.
Trust that the dominion of the earth is not smoothed out,
For he who spends the night commanding in it by whim.
For whoever treats it with tyranny stirs up its servants,
And neither weapon nor army will protect him from them!
And whoever governs it with justice rules its lands,
Just as Dhul-Qarnayn or Nebuchadnezzar ruled.
O people, let it not grieve you that you are tested,
And that you are distanced from your glory and held back.
We are the pillars by which you rise,
We are the fleets that sail with you.
We are the men steadfast in doctrine,
Upon the supreme principle until the time we are buried.
We lead you on safe paths, securely,
To where you will not suffer nor be harmed.
We demand our rights with explicit speech,
But we are not reckless in our speech.
We accept God's judgment in every situation,
We do not complain much nor see bad omens.
So persevere for the right that you seek,
For you are not excused in wasting it.
Do not harm he who harmed you, for forbearance is a watering hole,
Wholesome and pure, from which the source is not foul.
Be ready to die in your struggle, steadfast,
Even if you are warned of a lurking calamity.
And if the calamity upon you is great,
Then God suffices you in it, and God is Greatest!
