هيهات لا يعتري القرآن تبديل

وان تبدل توراة وانجيل

Never shall the Quran be altered,

Impossible! No alteration shall ever afflict the Quran,

Though the Torah and Bible were changed.

Even if the Torah and the Gospel undergo change.

قل للذين رموا هذا الكتاب بما

لم يتفق معه شرح وتأويل

Say to those who cast aspersions on this Book,

Say to those who cast upon this Book accusations

Finding no concordance with their commentary and interpretation:

That align with neither explanation nor interpretation:

هل تشبهون ذوي الألباب في خلق

إلا كما تشبه الناس التماثل

Do you liken those of reason to yourselves in creation,

"Do you resemble men of intellect in your nature,

As people resemble one another in appearance?

Or only as lifeless statues resemble living men?"

فاعزوا الأباطيل للقرآن وابتدعوا

في القول هيهات لا تجدي الأباطيل

Attribute falsehoods to the Quran and fabricate

So attribute falsehoods to the Quran and fabricate;

Vain sayings - never shall falsehoods avail.

In your speech—alas, falsehoods shall be of no avail.

وازروا عليه كما شاءت حلومكم

فإنه فوق هام الحق إكليل

Heap censures on it as your fancies please,

Disparage it however your whims dictate,

For it stands above the apex of truth as a crown.

For it remains a crown upon the very brow of Truth.

ماذا تقولون في آي مفصلة

يزينها من فم الأيام ترتيل؟

What can you say of its clear verses

What do you say of verses, lucid and detailed,

Adorned by the dictation of time?

Adorned by the recitation of the ages?

ماذا تقولون في سفرصحائفه

هدي من الله ممض فيه جبريل؟

What can you say of its pure pages,

What do you say of a Scripture whose pages are

Guidance from God, verified by Gabriel?

Guidance from God, bearing the signature of Gabriel?

آياته بهدى الإسلام ما برحت

تهدي الممالك جيلا بعده جيل

Its verses with Islam's guidance never ceased

Its verses, through the guidance of Islam, continue

To guide generations, one after another.

To guide the kingdoms, generation after generation.

فأية ملؤها ذكرى وتبصرة

وآية ملؤها حكم وتفصيل

What verse filled with reminders and insight,

Here is a verse filled with remembrance and insight,

What verse filled with wisdom and detail!

And there, a verse brimming with wisdom and detail.

كلامه الصدق لا مين ولا كذب

وحكمه الحق لا ميز وتفضيل

Its discourse is truth - no flexing or lying,

Its words are Truth—containing neither deceit nor lie,

Its rule is right - no bias or favor.

And its judgment is Justice—without bias or favoritism.

فليس فيه لأعلى الناس منزلة

(عدن) وفيه لأدنى الناس (سجيل)

So in it no station for the elite,

Within it, there is no special 'Eden' for the highest in rank,

As in Eden, no lowly place for the damned, as in Hell.

Nor a 'Sijjeel' reserved only for the lowliest of men.

ولا احتيال ولا غمص ولا مطل

ولا اغتيال ولا نغص وتنكيل

No cunning, cheating, swindling or wronging,

There is no trickery, no disparagement, no delay,

No backstabbing, vexing or tyranny.

No treachery, no misery, and no exemplary torment.

(الإشتراكية) السمحاء مذهبه

في الحكم لو لم تطل فيها الأقاويل

Its noble social doctrine

Magnanimous equity is its very doctrine

In rule, had not ramblings about it dragged on.

In governance, despite the lengthy debates surrounding the term.

إن هو إلا هدى للناس منبلج

ضاحي المسمى أغر الاسم تنزيل

It is but guidance for people, radiant,

It is naught but a dawning guidance for mankind,

Its name "Revelation" shedding light.

Clear in title, noble in name—a divine Revelation.

لئن مضت عنه أجيال وأزمنة

تترى فهل سامه نقض وتحويل

If generations and eras passed it by,

Though generations and eras have passed it by

Did you see it subjected to repeal and change?

In succession, has it ever suffered refutation or change?

قد كان أعدل قانون يساس به

أمر (الشعوب) ففيم القال والقيل؟

It was the most just law to rule

It has been the most just law by which

The affairs of nations - so why the talk and bickering?

The affairs of nations are governed; so why this idle talk?

ما بال «آشيل» في «الديبش» يسخر من

ءايات محكمه لا كان آشيل!؟

What ails this Achilles to mock

What ails "Achille," writing in "La Dépêche," that he mocks

Its decisive verses - would that he ne'er were!

Its precise verses? May Achille perish!

ما بال آشيل يهذي في مقالته

كحاكم راعه في النوم تخييل؟

Why does Achilles rave in his article

What ails Achille, raving deliriously in his article,

Like a shepherd dreaming fancies in slumber?

Like a ruler terrified by a phantasm in his sleep?

ما بال آشيل يزري المسلمين وهم

غر العرائك أنجاب بهاليل؟

Why does Achilles berate the Muslims, who are

What ails Achille that he scorns the Muslims, though they are

Unsullied progeny of lofty ancestry?

Noble in nature, high-born, and illustrious masters?

أفكارهم بهدى القرآن ثاقبة

فلا يخامرها في الرأي تضليل

Their minds by Quran's light perspicacious -

Their minds, through the Quran’s guidance, are piercing;

No misguidance tempts their considered opinion.

No delusion clouds their judgment or opinion.

وأمرهم بينهم شورى ودينهم

فتح من الله لا قتل وتمثيل

Their governance, consultation - their creed

Their affairs are settled by counsel among them, and their faith

God's opening, no slaying or torture.

Is a conquest from God—not slaughter and mutilation.

كيف التعصب من قوم شعارهم

رغم الكوارث إغضاء وتسهيل

How bigotry from a people whose motto

How can they be accused of fanaticism, when their motto,

Despite catastrophes is easing, smoothing the path?

Despite calamities, is forbearance and tolerance?

لا يعدم الحق أنصارا تحيط به

سورا ولو كثرت فينا الأضاليل

Truth never lacks defenders surrounding it

Truth shall never lack supporters to surround it

With ramparts - though misguidances abound among us.

Like a fortress wall, even if lies proliferate among us.

هذا (ابن باديس) يحمي الحق متئدا

كذاك يتئذ الشم الأماثيل

Thus the stalwart protects statues from falling.

Here is Ibn Badis, defending the Truth with steady composure,

I see the late Abduh charging ahead

Just as the noble and exemplary figures stand firm.

إني أرى (عبده) المرحوم مندفعا

ينحي على الرغم (هانوتو)وبرتيلو

Fending off Hanotaux and Berthelot.

I see the late Abduh rushing forth,

O God, bless Abdulhamid for his courage,

Striking down the arguments of Hanotaux and Berthelot.

(عبدالحميد) رعاك الله من بطل

ماضي الشكيمة لا يلويك تهويل

An intrepid hero whom no threats can shake.

O Abdelhamid, may God protect you—what a hero you are!

You have blotted out Achilles' words

Of resolute will, unbent by intimidation.

دمغت أقوال آشيل كما دمغت

أبطال أبرهة الطير الأبابيل

As the heroes of Abraha blotted out the elephants.

You shattered the words of Achille, just as

Despite my own inadequate words

The Ababil birds shattered the champions of Abraha.

عليك مني وإن قصرت في كلمي

تحية ملؤها بشر وتهليل

Accept greetings filled with good tidings and praise!

Upon you—though my words may fall short—

Is a greeting filled with glad tidings and jubilation.
