    حفت بحافتها الزهور

    Oh, how lovely is a gushing spring,

    bordered at its brim by flowers.

    ـض على سرائرنا السرور

    It dwells in Batna, pouring forth

    joy upon our secret hearts.

  3. في روضة غناء قد

    غنت بساحتها الطيور

    In a lush garden where

    birds sang within its courtyard.

  4. في حوضها ماء يجو

    ل كأنه فلك يدور

    In its basin, the water roams,

    circling as though it were a spinning sphere.

  5. وترى الفقاقع كالكوا

    كب فيه تطلع أو تغور

    You see the bubbles like stars

    rising therein or setting down.

  6. وترى به الأسماك تلمـ

    ـع كاللآلئي في النحور

    And you see the fish inside gleaming

    like pearls adorning necks.

  7. تلهو وتمرح لا تحـ

    ـس بحبسها بين الصخور

    They frolic and play, unaware

    of their confinement between the rocks.

  8. مثل الطيور الغاديا

    ت الرائحات على الوكور

    Like birds going out at dawn,

    and returning to their nests at dusk.

  9. بينا مياه في صعو

    د إذ مياه في حدور

    While some waters soar in ascent,

    others flow downward in descent.

  10. فكأنها رتب العبا

    د يديرها صرف الدهور

    As if they are the ranks of men

    directed by the turning of the ages.

  11. أو كالرياح فمن قبو

    ل ناوحتك ومن دبور

    Or like the winds: some from the east

    blowing against you, and some from the west.

  12. يا حبذا فوارة

    نضحتك من ماء طهور

    Oh, how lovely is a fountain

    that sprinkled you with pure water.

  13. فكأنها قارورة

    حوت الرفيع من العطور

    As if it were a crystal flask

    that contained the finest of perfumes.

  14. قد ضمختك وأسكرتـ

    ـك ولا كسؤوس ولا خمور

    It anointed you and intoxicated you,

    yet with neither cups nor wines.

  15. تركت شعورك بالعبيـ

    ـر يطاول الشعرى العبور

    It left your senses, through fragrance,

    soaring to rival the star Sirius on high.

  16. يا عين جددت النشا

    ط لنا وبددت الفتور

    O spring, you renewed energy

    for us and dispelled our fatigue.

  17. فلأنت أجمل قينة

    غنت فأطربت الحضور

    For you are the most beautiful songstress

    who sang and enchanted the audience.

  18. هذا خريرك يستفـ

    ـز بلحنه أهل القبور

    This murmuring of yours stirs

    the dwellers of the graves with its tune.

  19. صلت مياهك للالا

    هـ صلاة إشراق ونور

    Your waters prayed to God,

    a prayer of radiance and light.

  20. فكأنها داوود في

    محرابه يتلو الزبور

    As if they were David in

    his sanctuary reciting the Psalms.

  21. قد جئت ظلك زائرا

    حسبي بظلك من مزور

    I came to your shade as a visitor;

    your shade suffices me as a sanctuary.

  22. فوجدت حسنا فيك لا

    يطغى علي ولا يجور

    And I found beauty in you that does not

    tyrannize me nor oppress.

  23. متواضعا لا بالنفو

    ر إذا اقتربت ولا الفخور

    Humble, with no aversion

    if you draw near, nor any pride.

    بين العشية والبكور

    The beauty in you is renewed

    between the evening and the dawn.

  26. الحسن فيك ممحض

    لا ريب فيه ولا غرور

    The beauty in you is unadulterated;

    there is no doubt in it nor deception.

  27. ولرب ذي وجه جميـ

    ـل نفسه مأوى الشرور

    While many a one with a beautiful face

    has a soul that harbors evils.

  28. قل للأديب هوى الطبيـ

    ـعة لا يحول ولا يجور

    Say to the writer: The love of nature

    does not shift nor go astray.

  29. فاهو الطبيعة إنها

    أم تحوطك بالبرور

    So love nature, for she is

    a mother who embraces you with kindness.

  30. حب الطبيعة طاهر

    لا فسق فيه ولا فجور

    The love of nature is pure,

    holding no vice nor debauchery.
