If people were to uncover their inner selves entirely,

You would find none among them but the cunning and the false.

They may laugh while the fire of sorrow sears them,

Leaving you bewildered in your attempt to explain it.

So never offer flattery for any laughter of theirs,

Neither to a laughing commoner nor to a king.

I see the radiant face like blazing embers,

And the smiling mouth like a veil torn asunder.

If I possessed absolute authority over mankind,

I would punish with flogging and exile whosoever laughed.
