لخير العمل

Hope has called out to you

To the noblest of deeds

فخل الونى

وقم عن عجل

So cast off lethargy

And rise up with speed

أضعنا المنى

بفرط المهل

We have squandered our hopes

Through excessive delay

فهل نفخة

تزيل الفشل؟

Is there a stirring breath

To sweep failure away?

وهل صرخة

تهز القلل؟

Is there a resounding cry

To shake the mountain peaks?

رجال الحمى

حماكم سأل

Men of the sanctuary

Your homeland appeals to you

فلبوا الحمى

كجند نسل

So answer the call of the land

Like soldiers rushing forth

وسيل همى

وغيث هطل!

Like a torrent pouring down

And a heavy, falling rain!

أراه احتمى

بكم واحتفل

I see it has sought refuge

In you, and has rejoiced

فحلوا الحبى

وشدوا العضل

So rise from your repose

And brace your muscles tight

وضموا القرى

ولموا الكتل

Unite the villages together

And gather the masses as one

علام الجفا؟

وفيم الدغل؟

Why this estrangement?

And for what is this rancor?

إلام الونى؟

ومم الوجل؟

How long this sluggishness?

And of what are you afraid?

وفينا دم

صفا واستقل

While within us flows blood

Pure and proud

دم لم يضع

سدى أو يطل

Blood not wasted in vain

Nor shed without account

زكا في الألى

زكوا في الأول

It was virtuous in the ancients

Who were righteous in the past

ومنهم جرى

لنا وانتقل

From them it has flowed

Down to us, passed along

وفينا يد

أبت أن تغل

And we possess a hand

That refused to be shackled

بها في الوغى

رددنا الغيل!

With it, in the heat of battle

We repelled the assaults!

وكم في العلى

لنا من مثل

And how often in glory

Do we have examples set

أبى جدنا

علينا الهزل

Our forefather refused

That we should be trifled with

فأخلاقنا

بدت كالشعل

Thus our characters

Shone forth like torches

كشفنا بها

جميع الظلل

By which we dispelled

All the shadows of darkness

وترياقنا

يزيل العلل

And our antidote

Cures all ailments

وتأييدنا

جرى في الازل!

And our divine support

Was ordained in eternity!

به ربنا

لنا قد كفل

Through it, our Lord

Has guaranteed for us

فسبحانه

إلها عدل!

So glory be to Him

A God of perfect justice!

أنار النهى

لنا والمقل

He illuminated our minds

And our vision too

وإحسانه

إلينا اتصل

And His beneficence

Has reached down to us

وقرآنه

علينا نزل

And His Quran

Was sent down upon us

لقد خصنا

بخير الملل

He has distinguished us

With the best of creeds

ولم يفترض

بها من ثقل

And He did not impose

Within it any burden

فلا نبتغي

بها من بدل

So we seek not

Any substitute for it

حنيف الورى

أبونا الأجل

The true monotheist of mankind

Our most glorious father

بنى ركنها

لنا فاعتدل

He built its foundation

For us, so it stood upright

وبالمصطفى

هداها اكتمل

And through the Chosen One

Its guidance was perfected

أتت أرضنا

كصبح أطل

It came to our land

Like the dawning morning

فأمست بها

كخلد رفل

So the land became

Like a paradise in bloom

وإفريقيا

بلاد الغلل

And Ifriqiya

The land of abundant harvests

وأرض بها

رؤى لا تمل

A land containing

Sights that never weary

ففاخر بها

عداك العذل

So take pride in it

Let no blame touch you

وسل برقة

وطنجة سل

And ask Barqa

And ask of Tangier

وما حدتا

بها من دول

And all that lies between them

Of states and dynasties

سل الكل عن

سلام وصل

Ask everyone about

A peace that arrived

ودين أتى

وكفر رحل

And a faith that came

While disbelief departed

وعن عقبة

بها حيث حل

And ask about Uqba

Wherever he encamped

وحساننا

وموسى البطل

And our Hassan

And Musa the hero

وعن طارق

نزيل الجبل

And ask about Tariq

The conqueror of the mountain

خطيب الوغى

بليغ الجمل

The orator of the battlefield

Eloquent in his speech

وأجناده

تسل الأسل

And his soldiers

Unsheathing their swords

ولذريق في

ذراه اختبل

While Roderic in

His high tower was confounded

وضاقت به

جميع الحيل

And all strategies

Became narrow for him

وإذ طارق

عليه حمل

And when Tariq

Charged against him

أحل الردى

به فانجدل

He unleashed destruction

Upon him, and he fell

فهذا قضى

وهذا ارتحل

So this one perished

And that one fled

وهذا عنا

له وامتثل

And another submitted

To him and obeyed

وحل الهدى

جميع الحلل

And guidance replaced

All previous doctrines

أرى حضرا

على الغيب دل

I see a civilization

Pointing to the unseen future

أرى فجرنا

بدا واستهل

I see our dawn

Has broken and begun

تلمسان قد

غدت في جذل

Tlemcen has truly

Become filled with joy

غدت غادة

صباها اقتبل

She became a fair maiden

Whose youth is in bloom

بدت في الحلى

لنا والحلل

Adorned in jewels

And fine robes for us

حمى كانف

لنا لم يزل

A sheltering sanctuary

She remains for us

فصل أعظما

عليها اشتمل

So honor the great bones

That lie within her soil

أيا نجل صن

حمى من نجل

O son, protect

The sanctuary of your sires

وحي اسمه

بأزكى القبل

And salute its name

With the purest of kisses

وهم في الحمى

هوى لا تبل

And wander in its love

A love that knows no cure

فؤادي اكتوى

به واشتعل

My heart is seared

By it, and set aflame

وبالنفس ما

بها من ثمل

And in my soul

Is a heady intoxication

فيا ناهلا

سقيت العلل

O you who drink deep

Quenching thirst again and again

ويا عاملا

وقيت الزلل

And O you who toil

May you be saved from error

تكثر قوى

فمن قل ذل

Gather your strength in numbers

For the few are brought low
