How long is death's arm
How long is the arm of Death,
That it did not even fear the beasts
It feared not even the lions.
It whipped us with a whip
It assaulted us with a whip
Of fate so we shook
Of destiny, spreading terror,
And buried in the soil a star
And deposited a star into the soil
From which we drew light
From whom we borrowed light,
A Hashimite sword
And a sharp Hashimi sword
With which we demolished fortresses
With which we shattered citadels.
Today, O heart, so be distressed
Today, O heart, perish
And pour out lamentations
In sorrow and burning anguish,
Today, O eye, so shed
And today, O eye, shed
Your tears in succession
Your tears in unbroken succession.
Cry for the ransomed leader
Weep for the redeemed leader,
Cry for the obeyed prince
Weep for the obeyed prince,
Cry for the hoped-for generous one
Weep for the noble one, the hope of many,
Cry for the valiant, brave one
Weep for the zealous, the brave,
Cry for the noble, virtuous one
Weep for the one of majestic virtues,
Cry for the beautiful, well-mannered one
Weep for the one of beautiful character.
O poetry, you are the most faithful
O Poetry, you are the most faithful
To one who kept a pact and was pious
Of those who kept a covenant and honored it;
I make you my back
I count you as my support,
And my arm and hand
My forearm and my strength.
Come, O poetry, and beget
Come, O Poetry, and lament
With me, remembering one who passed
With me for a pillar that has collapsed.
Come, let us remember and thank
Come, let us recall and give thanks
(Khalid) for his efforts and time
To Khaled for the efforts he strove;
Come, let us remember and thank
Come, let us recall and give thanks
(His resolve) and defense
For his boldness and his defense.
What is left for Algeria in us
What ails Algeria regarding us?
Except riffraff bleating
She tended to none but the rabble.
The generous are spurned
She shuns the noble and leans affectionately
While the ignoble are deferred to
Upon the vile in self-abasement.

The people have no sincerity
What ails the people within her?
Seeking only deceit
They accept nothing but deception.
If they befriend, it's from self-interest
If they befriend, it is false pretense,
If they support, it's for personal gain
If they accompany, it is for gain.
Is there anyone free in Algeria
Is there a free man in Algeria
Who will come seeking beauty?
Who performs good deeds by nature?
Tell Algeria to give
Say to Algeria: Fulfill
The leader his due
The right of the forsaken leader.
Why did she not do a favor
Did you not offer a kindness
For the beautiful one's sake?
To the one of beauty, as is due?
Why did she not remember a struggle
Did you not remember a struggle
That went on with contention?
That he waged, and a conflict?
How he protected her and suffered
How often he defended you and endured
Harm and conflict for her sake!
Harm and strife for your sake.
Ask how many demands
Ask the demands: how often
He proclaimed and spread
Did he publish and broadcast them?
And how he stood and fulfilled
And how he stood and fulfilled
Duties with devotion
The duties, shouldering the burden,
And how he deputized, trusting
And how he represented with confidence,
In his honesty and conviction
With his honesty and conviction,
And how he called, so heads bowed
And how he called out, and heads
Following him in procession
Bowed to him in obedience,
Until his reputation soared
Until, when his fame took flight
And rose high in her nation
And rose high within you in stature,
And fate's house hid
Time plotted in the unseen
From him grave tribulations
Terrible calamities for him,
She was still and thunderstruck
And faces frowned and grew gloomy,
Seeing faces turn ashen
Turning pale before him.
He intended to cut ties with her
Distance intended a separation from you,
I won't say detach completely
Though I do not say a total severance.
(In) Beirut he stayed, hoping
O resident of Beirut, how often
To reconcile eventually
Did you hope therein for a return?
How many plaints he raised
How often did you raise complaints,
Eloquent and in leaflets distributed
Eloquent words and written petitions?
How long he waited there
How often did you await in them
For an answer or hearing
An answer and a listening ear?
But fate is a liar
But the omen was the greatest lie,
And kin are barren wastelands
And the mirage was the most barren plain.
