There is no divine council in Algeria

In Algiers, there is no assembly wherein I might divert

That my soul desires and my heart is drawn to.

My soul, or to which I might allure my heart.

أمسيت لا منها ولا من أهلها

والقوم قومي والبلاد بلادي

I have become estranged from it and its people,

I have become neither of her nor of her people,

Though its people are my people and its land my land.

Yet the people are my people, and the land is my land.
