على عكس ما يقضي به اسمك كنت لي

ففالي بما يقضي به اسمك فائل

Unlike what your name decrees, you were for me

You were to me the contrary of what your name implies,

So be for me what your name decrees, inclined

So my hope in the promise of your name proved false.

تكدرت بعد الصفو لي فصرمتني

كما صرم (البصري) من قبل (واصل)

You muddied after clear waters for me, so you thwarted me

You turned turbid after clarity and severed ties with me,

As (Al-Basri) thwarted (Wāṣil) before

Just as Wasil broke away from Al-Basri long ago.
