And remember him with satisfaction and peace

And mention him with contentment and peace.

وترحم عليه في كل حين

فهو في العلم قدوة الأعلام

And have mercy on him at all times

And ask for mercy upon him at every moment,

For he is a role model of scholars

For he is, in knowledge, the exemplar of luminaries.

وهو في الزحف قائد الجيل حقا

وهو في الدين حجة الإسلام

And he is truly a leader of the generation in struggle

He is, in the march, truly the leader of the generation,

And he is an authority of Islam in religion

And in religion, he is the Proof of Islam.

وهو واعي الذكر الحكيم وداعـ

ـيه وراعي ما فيه من أحكام

He is aware of the wise remembrance and its caller

He is the conscious keeper of the Wise Remembrance and its caller,

And overseer of its rulings

And the guardian of the rulings contained within it.

وهو حامي هدي الرسول وناهيـ

ـك بدع له من الزيغ حامي

He is protector of the Prophet's guidance and prohibitor

He is the protector of the Prophet's guidance—and suffices

Of heresies that protect from deviation

As a defender against innovation and deviation.

كان عبد الحميد رائد بر

طيب القلب راحما للأنام

Abdelhamid was a leader of righteousness

Abdelhamid was a pioneer of righteousness,

With a pure heart, merciful to people

Good-hearted, merciful to all people.

طاوي الكشح عن نزاع البرايا

صادفا عنه صارفا للوئام

Folding pride over the conflict of vanities

Turning his side away from the disputes of men,

Turning away from it, reconciling disharmony

Averting from them, directing towards harmony.

علويا في العلم نفسا ودرسا

عمريا في الحكم والإلهام

Lofty in knowledge, in soul and lesson

Like Ali in knowledge, in soul and in lesson,

Umarite in wisdom and inspiration

Like Umar in judgment and inspiration.

عاش وقفا على الجزائر والإسـ

ـلام يرعاهما وفي الذمام

He lived dedicated to Algeria and Islam

He lived devoted entirely to Algeria and Islam,

Protecting them, amid difficulties

Guarding them both under his protective pact.

وغيورا على الشريعة يأبى

غير تشريعها لفض الخصام

And jealous of Sharia, refusing

Jealous for the Sharia, refusing

Other than its legislation, to resolve disputes

Any legislation but its own to settle disputes.

وغيورا على العروبة يفشي

ضادها لاهجا به في الكلام

And jealous of Arabism, spreading

Jealous for Arabism, spreading

Its pronunciation, articulating it in speech

Its unique tongue, constantly speaking it in discourse.

وغيورا على الجزائر قومـ

ـيا صميما من سادة الأقوام

And jealous of Algeria, communally

Jealous for Algeria, a nationalist

At the core of the elite peoples

To the core, among the masters of nations.

لم تعقه الأتعاب عن خدمة الشعـ

ـب ولا ضر معضل الأسقام

Hardships did not stop him from serving the people

Fatigue did not hinder him from serving the people,

Nor did the pain of tribulations stop him

Nor did the harm of grievous illness.

لا، ولا أرهبته سيطرة البطـ

ـش ولا الكيد تحت جنح الظلام

No, nor did the tyranny of oppression terrify him

No, nor did the domination of tyranny

Nor plotting under the wings of darkness

Terrify him, nor plots hatched under the wing of darkness.

فاذا حمت الهزاهز فيها

كان عضب المهز كالصمصام

So when instabilities shook it

And when the tremors grew heated within,

His anger shook like clashing swords

He was a sharp blade, shaking like the Samsam sword.

وإذا طمت الخطوب رأينا

هـ يدوي كالرعد بالإرزام

And when hardships intensified, we saw

And when calamities overwhelmed, we saw him

Him roar like thunder with might

Resounding like thunder with a mighty roar.

كان عبد الحميد في الرأي قطبا

مرشدا للعقول والأفهام

Abdelhamid was a guiding pole in opinion

Abdelhamid was a pivot in opinion,

A guide to minds and understandings

A guide for minds and understandings.

مثل (عبد الحميد) خطط منهـ

ـا قويما لقادة الأقلام

The example of (Abdelhamid) designed from it

The likes of Abdelhamid charted a method,

A straight path for leaders of pens

Upright for the leaders of the pen.

يمحض الشعر للكفاح ويوصي

بالتسامي عن لوثه بالغرام

He purified poetry for struggle and advised

He purifies poetry for the struggle and advises

Rising above soiling it with passion

Rising above the pollution of romantic infatuation.

والتجافي عن الغرابة لفظا

واجتناب الغموض والإبهام

And avoiding eccentricity of words

And shunning strangeness in wording,

And avoiding ambiguity and obscurity

And avoiding ambiguity and vagueness.

يا ابن باديس يا أبا الشعب قم فانـ

ـظر بفخر لشعبك المقدام

Oh son of Ben Badis, father of the people, rise and look

O Ibn Badis, O father of the people, rise and look

Proudly at your resolute people

With pride at your bold people.

قم تجد شعبك المخلف قبلا

سار شوطا مع الشعوب النوامي

Rise, you will find your former negligent people

Rise, you will find your people, once left behind,

Have marched a stretch with the rising nations

Have marched a stride with developing nations.

قم تجد دولة الجزائر قامت

وأقامت بالحكم حر النظام

Rise, you will find the state of Algeria established

Rise, you will find the State of Algeria has stood,

And established free rule

And established a free system of governance.

قم تجد راية الجزائر تعلو

فوق كل الربوع والآكام

Rise, you will find the flag of Algeria flying

Rise, you will find the banner of Algeria rising

Above all the lands and peaks

Above all the quarters and hills.

شبت الثورة التي منك هبت

ريحها حين شب عود الضرام

The revolution that sprang from you

The revolution ignited, the winds of which blew from you,

When the wick of embers caught fire grew up

When the stick of kindling caught fire.

واستتبت أسبابها فاستحالت

كل أنغامنا إلى ألغام

And its causes became stable, so all

Its causes were established, so they transformed

Our melodies turned into anthems

All our melodies into landmines.

صد جيش التحرير فيها قوى البغـ

ـي ورد العرين للضرغام

The army of liberation in it repelled the powers of aggression

In it, the Liberation Army repelled the forces of oppression,

And returned the nest to the eagles

And returned the lion's den to the lion.

كيف تنسى الجزائر اليوم وفدا

كنت تحتل صدره في المقام

How can Algeria forget today the sacrifice

How can Algeria today forget a delegation

You took to heart in status

In which you occupied the forefront of status?

يوم جابهت بالدفاع (دلادي)

وهو يرغي مهددا بانتقام

The day you confronted with defense (Delady)

The day you confronted Daladier in defense,

As he was snarling with threats of revenge

While he frothed, threatening revenge.

قلت بالمدفع اغتررت وحسبي

مدفع فوقه به الله رامي

You said with the cannon you transgressed, and it suffices me

You said: "You are deluded by the cannon, but suffice for me

A cannon which God makes its shooter

A cannon above it, with which God shoots."

موقف حاسم شهرت به الإنـ

ـكار في وجه من طغى كالحسام

A decisive stand you protested with

A decisive stance in which you unsheathed denial

In the face of an oppressor raging like a sword

In the face of the tyrant, like a sword.

كتحدي أبي حنيفة للمنـ

ـصور أو مالك برفض الحرام

Like the defiance of Abu Hanifa to al-Mansur

Like the challenge of Abu Hanifa to Al-Mansur,

Or Malik rejecting the forbidden

Or Malik in rejecting the forbidden.

وسعيد والمنذر بن سعيد

أو كعمر والعز عبد السلام

And Sa'id and Al-Mundhir ibn Sa'id

And Sa'id and Al-Mundhir bin Sa'id,

Or like Umar and Al-'Izz ibn 'Abd al-Salam

Or like Umar and Al-Izz bin Abd al-Salam.

أو كيعقوب، وابن يعمر يحيى

وابن تيمية فقيه الشام

Or like Ya'qub, and Ibn Ya'mar Yahya

Or like Yaqub, and Ibn Ya'mar Yahya,

And Ibn Taymiyyah, the jurist of Levant

And Ibn Taymiyyah, the jurist of the Levant.

هكذا أعلن الأئمة قبلا

سيف إنكارهم على الظلام

Thus the imams before declared

Thus did the Imams declare before,

The sword of their rejection of injustice

The sword of their rejection against the oppressors.

ويح من أسخط الإله وأرضى

بالهوى من طغى من الحكام

Woe to those who angered God and pleased

Woe to him who angers God and pleases

The desires of oppressive rulers

Through caprice, those rulers who tyrannize.

يا ابن باديس هذه فئة الحـ

ـق بذكراك تحتفي كل عام

Oh son of Ben Badis, this group of truth

O Ibn Badis, this is the faction of Truth,

Honors your memory each year

Celebrating your memory every year.

وتحي (أفريل) شهر توفيـ

ـك وتوفيك شكرها باحترام

And celebrates (April), the month you passed away

Reviving April, the month of your passing,

Thanking you with respect

And fulfilling its gratitude to you with respect.

إن ذكراك موعد عربي

وطني لنا كثير الزحام

Your memory is an Arab patriotic

Truly, your memory is an Arab appointment,

National appointment for us, very crowded

A patriotic one for us, immensely crowded.

إن ذكراك تبعث الوعي في الشعـ

ـب كبعث الأرواح في الأجسام

Your memory awakens awareness in the people

Truly, your memory resurrects consciousness in the people,

Like the awakening of souls in bodies

Like the resurrection of souls into bodies.

شعب عبد الحميد ها هو وافى

فالق عبد الحميد بالإكرام

Abdelhamid's people, here they are, loyal

The people of Abdelhamid, here they are, coming;

Cleaving to Abdelhamid with honor

So meet Abdelhamid with honor.

رفرفت روحه عليك وناجتـ

ـك فهاجتك للدموع الهوامي

His soul fluttered over you and confided

His spirit fluttered over you and whispered to you,

In you, so it stirred you to shed tears

Stirring you to flowing tears.

قد تبناك بالبرور وربا

ك بنصح كوالد قوام

It adopted you with innocence and raised

He adopted you with kindness and raised you

You with advice like a caring father

With counsel like an upright father.

لا تضع ما ورثت منه من المجـ

ـد وكن فيه راشد الأحلام

Do not lose what you inherited from him of glory

Do not waste the glory you inherited from him,

And be in it rightly guided of dreams

And be mature in your dreams regarding it.

إن ما جد من مشاريعك الغر

ر امتداد لمجده المترامي

What you accomplish of his great projects

Indeed, the noble projects that have emerged from you

Is an extension of his endless glory

Are an extension of his sprawling glory.

وقوام الشعوب خلق سليم

مستقيم فكن قوي القوام

And the strength of nations is decent character

The foundation of nations is a sound character,

Upright, so be strong in stature

Upright, so be strong in foundation.

وبتقوى الإله تقوى فخذها

لك زادا لعيش دار الدوام

And with piety of God, you will be strengthened

And by fear of God be strengthened, so take it

Take it as provision for eternal home

As provision for the life of the Abode of Eternity.

شغلتنا حياتنا عن مداها

فأمنا مصائر الأيام

Our lives preoccupied us from their purpose

Our lives distracted us from their ultimate span,

So we forgot the fates of days

So we felt safe from the destinies of days.

ليس غير المتاب حبل نجاة

في حياة لجية الآثام

There is no salvation but repentance

There is no lifeline of salvation other than repentance

In a life laden with sins

In a life that is a deep sea of sins.

رب فاقبل متابنا واعف عنا

وأثبنا الرضى وحسن الختام

Lord, accept our repentance and pardon us

Lord, accept our repentance and pardon us,

And make us content and good ending

And reward us with contentment and a good ending.
