Do you realize the true worth of this cherished guest?

هذا (ابن باديس) الامام المرتضى

(عبد الحميد) الى حماك يصير

This is the respected imam Ibn Badis

This is Ibn Badis, the chosen and approved Imam,

Abdul Hamid comes to rest in your protection

Abdelhamid, who now descends into your sanctuary.

العالم الفذ الذي لعلومه

صيت بأطراف البلاد كبير

The brilliant scholar whose knowledge

The peerless scholar whose vast knowledge

Made him greatly renowned in all lands

Holds great renown across the furthest ends of the land.

بعث الجزائر بعد طول سباتها

فالشعب فيها بالحياة بصير

He awakened Algeria from its long slumber

He awakened Algeria after its long slumber,

And its people became enlightened with life

So that its people now have clear insight into life.

وقضى بها خمسين عاما كلها

خير لكل المسلمين وخير

He spent fifty years there, all of them

He spent fifty years within this land, all of them

Good for all Muslims and more

Devoted to goodness—and yet more goodness—for all Muslims.

ومضى اليك تخصه بثنائها

وإليه من بين الرجال تشير

He went to you, deserving your praises

He has gone to you while the nation singles him out with praise,

And you point to him among the best of men

And points to him as distinguished among all men.

(عبد الحميد) لعل ذكرك خالد

ولعل نزلك جنة وحرير

Abdul Hamid, your memory is eternal

O Abdelhamid, may your memory be eternal,

And your dwelling a garden and silk

And may your dwelling place be Paradise and silk.

ولعل غرسك في القرائح مثمر

ولعل وريك للعقول منير

Your planting in minds is fruitful

May the seeds you planted in our minds bear fruit,

And your watering makes intellects shine

And may the spark you struck continue to illuminate our intellects.

لا ينقضى حزن عليك مجدد

وأسى له بين الضلوع سعير

Grief for you will not cease or fade

Grief for you does not cease; it is forever renewed,

A burning sorrow in hearts remains

And sorrow burns like a blazing fire within the ribs.

نم هادئا فالشعب بعدك راشد

يختط نهجك في الهدى ويسير

Sleep in peace, the people after you are guided

Sleep calmly, for the people after you are rightly guided,

They follow your path of guidance and walk

Tracing your path of righteousness and marching forward.

لا تخش ضيعة ما تركت لنا سدى

فالوارثون لما تركت كثير

Do not worry, nothing you left is lost in vain

Fear not that your legacy will be lost or go to waste,

For your heirs are many

For the inheritors of what you left behind are many.

نفحتك من رحمات ربك نفحة

وسقاك عيث من رضاه غزير

Your breeze is a mercy from your Lord

May a breeze of mercy from your Lord breathe upon you,

And your drink plentiful contentment from His approval

And may an abundant rain of His pleasure water your soul.
