لا تجعلني كأَقوام علمتهم

لَم يظلموا لبةً يوماً ولا وَدَجا

Do not make me like people who were wronged

Never being oppressed even for a moment

اني لأَغلاهم باللحم قد علموا

نيئاً وأَرخصهم باللحم إِذ نضجا

I regard them highly with meat, as they know

Fresh, and make it cheap for them when cooked

أَنا ابنُ قاتل جوع القوم قد علموا

إِذا السماء كست آفاقها رهجا

I am the son of one who kills the hunger of people, as they know

When the sky covers its horizons with dusk

يا رب أَمرين قد فرّجتُ بينهما

إِذا هما نشبا في الصدر واِعتلجا

O Lord, two matters I have separated between them

When they claw into the chest and churn

وَلا أَرى صاحبي هجران زوجته

ولا أَحدثها السوآت إِن خرجا

I do not see my companion estranging his wife

Nor do I speak ill of her if they go out

أديمُ خلقي لمن دامت خليقته

وأَمزج الحلو أَحياناً لمن مزجا

My nature endures for those whose nature endures

And I mix sweetness sometimes for those who mix

وأَقطع الخرق بالخَرقاء لاهية

إِذا الكواكب كانَت في الدجى سرجا

I mend the tear with a patch jokingly

When the stars are twinkling in the darkness of night

ما أَنزل اللَه من امر فأَكرهُه

إِلا سيجعلُ لي من بعده فرجا

Whatever command Allah sends down that I dislike

He will surely make for me relief after it

ما مدّ قوم بأَيديهم إِلى شرف

إِلّا رأونا قياماً فوقهم درجا

No people extend their hands to nobility

Except we see ourselves above them in rank

لم يجعلِ اللَه قَلبي حين ينزلُ بي

همٌ تضيقني ضيقاً ولا حرجا

Allah did not make my heart, when worries descend

Squeeze me tightly, nor feel distressed
