To God I complain of endless night and a neighbor
who stays awake till morning with shouting children
no blessing on them
outcries at dawn don't stop
till dusk, the absurd in a home of goodness
between them, God; disperse them!
their screams scaling the sky
like slavering dogs round a corpse
they barked, an uproar, at nightfall
till all the village dogs
on the plains, in the hills
Started howling, then the livestock
and horses, nerves struck, stampeded
farmers thought a raid was striking
spear-armed warriors, raid by night
so men came out grabbing their spears
and staffs, muttering Quran verses
infant girls screaming, women stood
at the doors crying for help, shouting!
God, give me strength to bear this
shake them down with an earthquake
