ذَنْبِي إِلَيْكَ غَرَامِي

فَهَلْ يَحِلُّ مَلامِي

My offense against you is my passion;

is it then right to reproach me?

يَاظَالِمِي فِي هَوَاهُ

هَلَّا رَعَيْتَ ذِمَامِي

O my tyrant in his love,

why have you not honored my bond?

حَتَّامَ تُعْرِضُ عَنِّي

وَلا تَرُدُّ سَلامِي

How long will you turn away from me

and not return my greeting?

عَطْفَاً عَلَيَّ فَإِنِّي

بَرَى هَوَاك عِظَامِي

Have compassion on me, for truly

your love has worn my bones away.

فَكَيْفَ تُنْكِرُ وَجْدِي

أَمَا رَأَيْتَ سَقَامِي

How, then, can you deny my anguish?

Have you not seen my sickness?

وَيْلاهُ مِمَّا أُلاقِي

مِنْ لَوْعَتِي وَهُيَامِي

Ah, woe for all that I endure

from my burning torment and delirious love!

رَقَّ النَّسِيمُ لِحَالِي

وَسَالَ دَمْعُ الْغَمَامِ

The breeze took pity on my plight,

and the raincloud’s tears streamed;

وَسَاعَدَتْنِي فَنَاحَتْ

عَلَيَّ وِرْقُ الْحَمَامِ

and, joining me, they wailed—

over me—the gray doves.

فَيَا سَمِيرَ فُؤَادِي

فِي يَقْظَتِي وَمَنَامِي

O intimate companion of my heart,

in waking and in dreams,

مَتَى يَفُوزُ بِوَصْلٍ

أَسِيرُ لَحْظِكَ سَامِي

when shall he attain union—

Sami, captive to your glance?
