Do not reproach me for the fortune I freely gave away
to those who seek my bounty—for I am noble in character.
If a man has no generosity with which to meet
his companions’ needs, then riches are as nothing.
So if my wealth has dwindled after its abundance,
then surely my wealth cannot outlast my generosity.
