For a day like this the kingdom had long awaited,
So revel in it, an era whose hallmark is triumph.
Egypt exulted after despair and was gladdened,
The common folk were jubilant, awash in ink.
With your victory you obtained what you had hoped for.
Still you rise to defend the nation and Islam.
Justice extends its reach and injustice recoils,
Security hangs loose while fear rolls up its sleeves,
An aid from God that shone after darkness,
As daybreak reveals what night had concealed.
The people are intoxicated with joy and rapture,
Swaying as if the throngs are drunk.
Surging to the summoner, across one land they flow,
And another gathers them in — throng upon throng.
In every club an orator by his pulpit,
A gathering, and in each valley people dart.
The hearing relishes what the tongue dictates,
And the heart clings to what sight intimates.
No wretchedness, nor harm, nor alarm,
No enmity, nor treason, nor caution.
A feast that set the world aflutter with joy,
A blessing whose dues no human can pay.
How can the world but glory in one whose rising sun
If it fell, none would remain for man and trace?
Rejoice, O children of the nations, for you have
In his justice, a haven with rivers flowing!
He is the king whose enlightened rule, but for which,
Justice would have neither essence nor vestige.
He came to Egypt and the world, though fraught with peril,
And no sooner appeared than the danger recoiled.
Successful in doing good, inventing
What minds fall short of grasping.
He pours forth dew and showers, bounty and safekeeping —
Thus is time, with its weal and woe.
He holds sway gently when wisdom fails him
Toward punishment, and pardons when able.
For might, if not wise, is but excess,
And clemency, if not from ability, but frailty.
When he deems fit, the gleams of his wisdom shine forth
As sparks scatter after flint is struck.
Traces of his wisdom reveal his merit,
All things, in and of themselves, his traces show.
When he smiles, the meadows of his pleasure bloom,
Generous, not every lightning flash brings rain.
Take hold of the kingdom, O Abbas, and remain
In a bounty unmarred by bitterness.
You are of a lofty lineage in glory,
Prospering, with light and fruit made clear.
I have strained my soul in praise, but cannot attain
Your sublimity — how can the moon be grasped?
So grace me by heeding some words
That, though poor in speech, are pearls.
I gave them your noble name — a raiment
That lent the world beauty and pride.
When the tongue of thanks intones them, cities arise
And tribes stand alert out of love for you.
Still you are the hope to which hearts
Soar until the Trumpet is blown.
