When will this barren desert bloom,
And quench my thirsting liver’s thirst?
The clouds rain down on every side,
But miss my small encampment’s site.
Will Nile’s sweet brook my thirst allay,
This parched liver’s thirst allay?
Is rest beneath the acacia’s shade,
Where soft green grass makes gentle bed?
Where boughs, as if a silken mantle spread
O’er her, the meadow flowers array?
The petals in the breeze take flight,
As fledglings leave in spring’s delight,
A land to live in pleasure and peace,
The sweetest spot for man’s release!
O Lord, so guide my steps aright,
The straight arrow flies the best in flight.
