I ask the abodes about the beloved, while in the wilderness

There is a house of his, inhabited, and a dwelling,

And from distress is the questioning of the humble walls,

With the hand of oblivion, their answer is gestures,

The obstinate soul recalled through them its time,

For remembering is passion to the souls,

When for desire there is fruit that flickers, and for youth

A cup that is sipped, and for wishes, determination.

In it the eye is delighted between parties

In which there is greeting, embrace and union.

With youths in whom bliss overflowed upon them

And reverence and esteem made them grow.

The traits of kings went away with them, so there is not in

Their dalliance any absurdity or coercion.

They speak not but the etiquette of passion,

Of gentle souls, patient with ordeal, generous.

From each pretty faced one, his light is borrowed

As if the full moon unveiled its surface from clouds.

The eye cannot be fixed on their brilliance

And feet falter when meeting them.

The riders spend the evening, so if her cup is illuminated

They went, and if the light diminished, they stayed.

She was confined in a prison, no light stood against its destruction,

And no darkness lingered upon it.

Until when she slept and her agitation subsided,

It flowed, and tasting it had no pain.

It enchants the eyes with its fire but it

Is cold upon its drinker, and peaceful.

So polish with it the rust of worries, and be not

    A fool whom fantasies alarm.

And know that man is not immortal,

And time has in it health and disease.

The youth perishes the length of life, and it

Is a disease for him, without chagrin, poison.

So look with your eyes, do you see any nation

That lasted? And is there for the wayfarer an abode?

These cities have been emptied of their people

    After bliss, and these pyramids.

    Nothing remains but that delusion

    In fate chews up ambitions.

And I had realized matters without it

And reversal and affirmation came upon me.

And if stillness is stirring, and if tranquility

Is flaming, and if silence is speech.

And if life yet no life, a demise

That makes bodies live, yet it is decay.

This arrives and that departs, unwillingly,

From it, so reconciliation at times, and feud.

Thus the light, if you clarify your matter, is darkness,

And the beginning, if you ponder it, is the end.
