A ruin Khawlah left in the sand,

Ancient now with the marks of time.

As if the land had welcomed back

Its exile, mounted on galloping steed.

Or a new inscription on stone tablets

Still sharp and clear, though sealed away.

The winds erased a habitation’s design

Till not a trace of it remained.

    Deserted now, its people mocked,

Though in their hearts, sickness lives.

As the living mock death when it comes

Bearing to each their destined doom.

    Date palms like spinsters, lodged

In a hollow, some heavy with fruit.

A tribe easy to live among, vines

Entwined between them like a wreath.

Tethered horses in their shade, the cheeks

    Of maidens talking softly beneath.

Camels whose homes are watering holes for warriors,

Grazed by lambs and baby goats.

I left a manor fitted out as if

Affliction’s very self designed its rooms.

A young she-camel led the caravan,

Watering sheep at each rest stop.

Tame doves nested and cooed within,

    While partridges and turtledoves bred.

Some mouth their misery, vile habits nothing

But scandal piled on ugly scandal.

An equivalent for their abuse is a neighbor

Shut out, stripped of all he owned.

Till even native lands seem not to know

Their own hills and dales, once so familiar.

Had raiding parties not accustomed them

To war’s pursuits, they would not have endured.

Ravines that, come nightfall, wolves descend,

Like ravenous beasts that will not rest.

When she-camels desire to be covered, the males

Scramble to them filled with jealous zeal,

Urgently, rearing up like flowers that sense

No loss or misfortune in their lot.

At a watering hole, they paused to drink

From waters still, though foul and murky.

An inlet filled with shade and croaking frogs

Plunging in as if the place belonged to them.

Dawn rose up over the surface

    And skimmed the meadow’s breadth.

With such distraction I assuage my cares—

For cares and woes my spirit was created.

When fear of disdain enters a land, the brother

Of one twice-wronged can barely speak.

And pastures furrowed, as if a marriage

Were sundered, become the domain of kites.

Lost in the darkness of night, the birds above

A formation against which none can stand.

Westward, intractable to the bridle, frothing

At the mouth—no gentle beast is he!

I am a man prevented from mighty deeds

By my lot, which has dealt me injustice.

    With enmity mustered from everywhere,

Only my towering nobility rebuffed it.

Counted among them is Huwayy, though before him

A day at Buraqah of gracious fame.

And the morn we came upon them at the two hills’ pass,

Fanfare glinting like a drawn sword.

With battalions who by instinct alone

Knew how to pierce ranks as stars do heaven.

We’ll advance until we overcome the foe,

And drive them back, despaired and defeated.

You’ll see the terrified commander lose control,

Bolting like a stallion suddenly riderless.

The allied tribes we met where the grounds

Were loud with bugle and trumpet’s blare.

And on the eve of Hawaman, their chieftain

Surrendered—Qays knew that he was crushed.

Oh, many days before and after the Battle of Palms

Were joyless, although our women were safe.

The Guardians of the Tribe, when bonds weakened—

Lion, antelope, doum palm, and palm.

Their chieftain's words slurred in drunken defeat

As he sheltered in the wadi’s cove.

My people—ask whose the tents are

If tents for each clan grief bespoke!

Raiding their neighbors when autumn ends,

Plunder is portioned out in shares.

No guest comes to them, no pauper,

But rather, an armed siege their homes encircled.

Yet they have splendid warriors, noble lords,

Boughs of honor, protected and keeping guard.

When neglected, decay begins from within,

Though outwardly we remain praised and extolled—

We who defend their borderlands and stand

Above the enemy till our faces show rage.

My people! If those tents were questioned,

Each clan’s share of woes would be known.
