1. You saw, O son of Badr, your people’s humiliation—admit it—

on the morning when Jaḥsh shot Mālik with a broken-notched arrow:

  2. the best of you in character, and the best of you in lineage,

the dearest of them to his people, alive or dead.

  3. Through him you remembered a need you had forgotten,

and at al-Radh, because of him, another need still awaits you.

  4. So if you have driven along a scrawny flock of goats,

O Abū Mālik, then cry out and call your sheep to you.

  5. O Abū Mālik, if you pride yourself on the march,

then go—look into your women’s eyes.

  6. O Abū Mālik, I loathe your judgment,

yet you claimed that he had come to loathe your judgment.

  7. They are the valley’s two serpents; if you are an enchanter,

then go—catch up with what they carried off from your encampment.
