  1. لو أن أهل الشباب الغض بايعهم

    أهل المشيب وكل كان ذا جلب

    If the young people pledged allegiance

    To the elderly, and everyone was eager,

  2. أعطى ذوو الشيبة الأحقابَ سهمهم

    من الشباب وعيش فيه بالحقب

    The elderly would give the youth

    Their share, and live honestly with them.

  3. يوم الشباب بشهر الشيب مكتسب

    مع الزيادة من ترفيع ذي النشب

    A day of youth equals a month of old age gained,

    With a bonus from the elevation of aspirations.

  4. وقد لبست من النوعين أردية

    شتى وجربت من جَد ومن لعب

    And I have worn the robes of both kinds,

    Diverse, and tasted seriousness and play.
