1. الا حييت عنا يا مدينا

    وهل بأس بقول مسلَّمينا

    O city that we revived, do not forget us

    And what harm in saying what we believe?

  2. لنا قمر السماء وكل نجم

    تشير إليه أيدي المهتدينا

    For us is the moon in the sky and every star

    To which the hands of the guided point

  3. وجدت الله إذ سمى نزاراً

    واسكنهم بمكة قاطنينا

    I found God when He named me Nizar

    And settled them in Mecca as our residents

  4. لنا جعل المكارم خالصات

    وللناس القفا ولنا الجبينا

    He made generosity purely for us

    And for the people stinginess, and for us good judgment

  5. وما ضربت هجائن من نزار

    فوالج من فحول الأعجمينا

    And strikes that Nizar made were not weak

    For we are the stallions of the non-Arabs

  6. وما حملوا الحمير على عتاق

    مطهرة فيلفوا مبغلينا

    And they do not carry the donkeys on their shoulders

    Purifying those who wrap themselves

  7. وما سمَّوا بأبرهة اغتباطاً

    بشر ختونة متزينينا

    And they were not named after Abraha in pride

    Announcing the circumcised handsome ones

  8. وما وجدت نساء بني نزار

    حلائل أسودين وأحمرينا

    And I did not find the women of Bani Nizar

    To be loose, black or red

  9. ومن عجب عليّ لعمر أمٍ

    غذتك وغيرها تتايمنينا

    And how strange to me, by the life of a mother

    Who fed you and others you suspect

  10. تجاوزت المياه بلا دليل

    ولا علم تَعَسَّفُ مخطئينا

    You crossed the waters without a guide

    And without knowledge, the mistaken trespassing

  11. فإنك والتحول من معد

    كهيلة قبلنا والحالبينا

    You are, with the change from Ma'add

    Like Kahila before us and her searchers

  12. تخطت خيرهم حلباً ونَسئا

    إلى الوالي المغادر هاربينا

    You skipped their best - Aleppo and Nesi'

    To the leaving governor who escaped

  13. كعنز السوء تنطح عالفيها

    وترميها عِصيّ الذابحينا

    Like an evil goat that butts her milker

    And the slaughterer's sticks throw her down

  14. هم أولاد عمران بن عمرو

    مضيعي نسبة أو حافظينا

    They are the sons of 'Amran bin 'Amr

    Destroyers of lineage or preservers of it

  15. فإما الأزدُ أزدُ أبي سعيد

    فاكره أن أسمِّيها المزونا

    The Azd is the Azd of Abi Sa'id

    I dislike to call it Al-Mazoun

  16. فأي عمارة كالحي بكر

    إذا اللزبات لقبت السنينا

    Which construction is like the abode of Bakr

    When the wretched are titled the excellent

  17. اكر غداة اباس ونقر

    واكشف للأصائل إن عرينا

    Wake up after the sleep of Abas and Niqr

    And uncover the noble roots if we are stripped bare

  18. تضيق بنا الفجاج وهنَّ فِيحٌ

    ونهجرُ ماءَها السدم الدفينا

    The cracks are too narrow for us and they are spacious

    And we abandon its concealed, buried water

  19. ويأرِم كلَّ نابتةٍ رعاء

    وحشاشاً لهن وحاطبينا

    And every herder ruins the plants

    And firewood for them, and our kindlers

  20. وكان يقال إن بني نزار

    لَعلاَّت فأمسوا توأمينا

    And it used to be said that Bani Nizar

    Were weak, so they spent the night double

  21. تنبه بعد رقدته نزار

    لهم بالملحفات معاندينا

    Nizar woke up to them with blankets

    Hostilely with the pale, thin ones

  22. وينصُبْن القدور مشمِّرات

    يُخالسن العَجاهنة الرِئينا

    And they set up pots working hard

    Deceiving the dumb, empty-headed ones

  23. ولو جهَّزت قافية شروداً

    لقد دخلت بيوت الأشعرينا

    And if I had sent an army of poets

    They would have entered the houses of Al-Asha'ri

  24. ولارتحلت من العربان نضوا

    غنياً عن رحالة منطفينا

    And if I traveled from the Arabs, I would leave

    Self-sufficient, without the traveling bags

  25. ظعائنُ من بني الحُلاَّفِ تأوِي

    إلى خُرسٍ نواطقَ كالفتينا

    Some noisy women of Bani Hilal come

    To a deaf, speaking like youths

  26. يرون الجوب ما نزلوه خِصباً

    محافظةً وكالأُنُف الدرينا

    They see the lowlands where they descended fertile

    As protected and like rounded hillocks

  27. كأن الأم أمَ صداه لما

    جلوا عنه غُطاطة حابلينا

    As if the mother were Umm Sadah, because

    They avoided her like a pregnant camel

  28. ولا أكوي الصحاح براتعات

    بهن العُرّ قبلي ما كوينا

    I do not burn the authentic with lies

    The shame of which burns me before it burns

  29. اياد حين تنسب من معد

    وإن رغمت أنوف الراغمينا

    Eyyad, when attributed to Ma'add

    Even if the noses of the frowning frown

  30. وكانوا في الذؤابة من نزار

    وأهل لوائها متنزرينا

    And they were among the notable ones of Nizar

    And the people of its banner loose-clothed

  31. ترى أبناءنا غُرلاً عليها

    وننكؤهم بهن مختنينا

    You see our children as ghurral over it

    And we break them with them, spread wide

  32. وذلك ضرب أخماس أريُدت

    لأسداسٍ عسى ألا يكونا

    And that is the striking of a five

    Intended for a six, may it not be

  33. وضم قواصِيَ الأحياء منهم

    فقد رجَعُوا كحي واحدينا

    And the distant parts of the quarters among them

    For they have returned like one tribe

  34. أراد الناس من خَلَفي نِزار

    ضلالاً يمتنعن ويلتوينا

    The people wanted those after me, Nizar

    To go astray, refusing and twisting

  35. أرادوا أن تُزايلَ خالقات

    أديمهم يقسِن ويمترينا

    They wanted the eternal tents

    To be taken down and folded up

  36. بضرب لا دواء له وطعن

    ترى منه الأساة مولينا

    With a strike that has no cure and a stab

    From which you see the most wretched stumbling

  37. سقينا الأزرق اليزني منه

    واكعب صعدة حتى روينا

    We made the Azraq and Yazin drink from it

    And rugged As'ad until we quenched thirst

  38. أَلُقطة هدهد وجنودَ أنثى

    مبرشِمة ألحمي تأكلونا

    Scattered bits of a hoopoe and female troops

    Chewing my flesh ravenously eating us

  39. ولولا آل علقمة اجتدعنا

    بقايا من أنوف مُصَلَّمينا

    And were it not for the family of 'Alqamah we would have been torn apart

    The remaining bits from the noses of those made Muslim

  40. وفي أيامِ هاتٍ بهاءِ نُلفى

    إذا زرم الندى مُتَحلِّينا

    And in the days of Hatim and splendor

    When the dew was slipping down beautifully

  41. وأضحكت الضباعَ سيوفُ سَعْد

    بقتلى ما دُفن ولا ودينا

    And the swords of Sa'd made the hyenas laugh

    With corpses neither buried nor enshrouded

  42. وشطَّ ولي النوى أن النوى قُذفُ

    تيَّاحة غربة بالدار أحيانا

    And the Nawaa Valley, the Nawaa was thrown

    Aroaming desolation in the abode sometimes

  43. علام تقول همدان احتذينا

    وكندة بالقوارص مجلبينا

    Why are you saying, O Hamdan, we took their valley

    And Kindah with hooks pulling

  44. ضفادع جيأة حسِبت أضاةً

    منضِّبةً ستمنعها وطينا

    Toads of Jiyah that were thought to be an Udhah

    Plastered over, its mud will prevent it

  45. يرى الراؤون بالشَّفَرات منها

    وَقودَِ أبي حُباحِب والظُّبينا

    They see them with the finger-like projections

    Fuel of Abu Hubabib and the gazelles

  46. وراج لين تغلبَ عن شِظافٍ

    كَمتدن الصَّفا كيما يلينا

    And it spread to soft Taghlib from Shadhaf

    Like the plains spreading however they wish

  47. وبالعَذَوات منبتنا نُضارٌ

    ونبع لا فَصَافِصْ في كبُينا

    And in the valleys are our fresh pastures

    And a spring with no little outlets in the moumtains

  48. وغادرنا المقاوِل في مَكَرَ

    كخُشب الأثأبِ المتغطرسينا

    And we left the nomads in cunning

    Like the planks of the arrogant, towering tree

  49. نعلمها هَبِى وَهَلا وارحِبْ

    وفي أبياتنا ولنا افتُلينا

    We tell them: Habi, Hala and Arhib

    And in our verses for us are the skilled

  50. وسيف الحارث المعلوب أردى

    حُصَيْناُ في الجبابرة الرَّدِينا

    And the sword of Al-Harith the bent was more deadly

    To the mighty in the muscular giants

  51. وغادرنا على حُجر بن عمرو

    قشاعمَ ينتهشن وينتقينا

    And we left over Hujr bin 'Amr

    Plunderers who nibble and pick

  52. ومن عجب بجيلَ لعمرُ أُمٍّ

    غذتك وغيرها تتأممينا

    And how strange is Jail, by the life of a mother

    Who fed you and others you suspect

  53. فجعجنا بهن وكان ضرب

    ترى منها جماجمهم فيْنا

    So we stirred them up, and it was a strike

    You see their skulls smashed in it

  54. فإن أدع اللواتي من أناس

    أصاغرهن لا أدع الذينا

    And if I call those women from people

    I would not call the small ones

  55. ونحن غداةَ ساحوق تركنا

    حماةَ الأجدلين مُجَدَّلينا

    And we, the morning after Sahuq, left

    The protectors of Al-Ajdal in chains

  56. وخضنا بالقُرات إلى عدى

    وقد ظنت بنا مُضَرُ الظنونا

    And we waded in Qurat to 'Adi

    And Mudar thought ill thoughts of us

  57. بحوراً تَغْرَق السُّبَحاء فيها

    ترى الجُرْدَ العِتاقَ لها سفينا

    Seas that drown the plain in them

    You see the locusts as its ships

  58. ويبلغُ سُخنُها الاقدام منكم

    إذا أرتَانِ هيجتا أرينا

    And its heat reaches your feet

    When the two mills stirred up their hand mills

  59. فإني قد رأيت لكم صدودا

    وَتحْسَاء بعلةِ مرتغينا

    I have seen dams for you

    And wishful thinking in one desiring

  60. ولم نفتأ كذلك كل يوم

    لشأفةِ واغرٍ مستأصلينا

    And we did not stop being like that every day

    For the glory of an arousing, uprooting enemy

  61. ولا أرمي البرىَّ بغير ذنب

    ولا أقفو الحواصن إن قفينا

    And I do not shoot the innocent without sin

    Nor follow the paths if we followed

  62. ونحن وجندلٌ باغٍ تركنا

    كتائبَ جندلٍ شتى عزينا

    While we and Jandel the rebel left

    Scattered regiments from different troops

  63. كأن بني ذويبة رهط قرد

    فراش حول نار يصطلينا

    It is as if Bani Dhu'aybah are like apes

    Bats around a fire they warm themselves

  64. يطفُن بحَّرها ويقعن فيها

    ولا يدرين ماذا يتقينا

    They flap their brink and fall into it

    Not knowing what they should avoid

  65. فما ابن الكيّس النمري فيكم

    ولا أنتم هناك بدغفلينا

    So Ibn Al-Kayyis Al-Namari is not among you

    Nor are you there with Dhughafil

  66. ولا تلجن بيوت بني سعيد

    ولو قالوا وراءك مصفحينا

    And do not enter the houses of Bani Sa'id

    Even if they said behind you armored

  67. بضرب يتبع الألِلىّ منه

    فتاة الحيَّ وسطهم الرنينا

    With a strike that follows the tinkling from it

    The maiden of the quarter among them moaning
