1. أرأيتَ كيف ذَرى الدموعَ وناحا

    لما رأى بَرْقَ الجزيرةِ لاحا

    Have you seen how tears streamed and he wailed

    When he saw the peninsula's lightning flash

  2. وَتنفّسَ الصُعَداءَ حتى إِنْ سرتْ

    نسماتُ أوديةِ العقيقِ ارتاحا

    And breathed the mountain tops until if the breezes

    Of the valleys of al-‘Uqayq blew gently

  3. وَإذا عرته من التشوّقِ غَشْيَةٌ

    ثم استفيق بذكرِ (مكة) صاحا

    And if longing overcame him in a swoon

    Then he came to with the mention of (Mecca) crying out

  4. بلدٌ دعا فيه (الحسينُ) إلى التي

    تركتْ معبّسةَ الوجوه صباحا

    A land where al-Husayn called out to the one

    Who left faces frowning in the morning

  5. أملٌ به قد عاد أخضرَ ناظراً

    من بعد ما قالَ العداةُ انصاحا

    A hope through which the gaze turned green again

    After the enemies said it was lost

  6. حيتّكِ يا شبهَ الجزيرة مزنةٌ

    تدع المفاوزَ والملاع قراحا

    I salute you, peninsula, a proud she-camel

    Who leaves the waterless deserts and salt flats a pasture

  7. هل تعلمين بما أَصاب بلادَنا

    فالبغي مدَّ عَلى الربوع جناحا

    Do you know what befell our lands

    So tyranny extended its wings over the meadows

  8. كان الذي ناب البلادَ وَأهلها

    قدر تطيش له الحلوم متاحا

    What befell the country and its people

    Was a fate feathers shed for the bold

  9. ضاقتْ عَلى أبنائِها أرجاؤها

    وَغدا عليها الأجنبيُّ وَراحا

    Its vastness narrowed around its sons

    And the foreigner attacked it and went

  10. في الشامِ ما يدع الحليمَ محمّقاً

    جمحتْ به خيلُ الأَناةِ جماحا

    In Syria lies what maddens the forbearing

    The horses of Anat galloped in it wildly

  11. هاضوا جناحيها وَخلوا قبلها

    غرضاً يسيل من السهام جراحا

    They spread their wings and swooped down before it

    Aiming arrows that spilled copious blood

  12. وَ (ببعلبكَ) حوادثٌ لو أنها

    تنمى لعمرو ما أساغَ الراحا

    And in Baalbek events that if

    They afflicted ‘Amr would not have tolerated

  13. هتك المحارمَ وَهو جدّ محرمٍ

    أضحى لأعلاجِ البغاةِ مباحا

    Violating sanctities while sacred months ensue

    Has become permitted for the rebels’ healers

  14. المحصناتُ مباحةٌ حرماتُها

    تجد السياطَ عَلى الخصورِ وِشاحا

    Inviolable women are left permitted, their sanctity

    Finding whips against hips and cheeks

  15. كم مسجدٍ حرقوا وَكم مِنْ راكعٍ

    سالتْ دماؤهمُ بها ضحضاحا

    How many a mosque they burned, how much blood

    Streamed from praying men, gushing

  16. أضحى كتابُ اللهِ وَهو ممزقٌ

    أرجوا إليه أسنةً وَصفاحا

    God’s Book lies torn to shreds

    Tongues and palms stretching to it

  17. يا غيرةَ الله اغضبي لكتابهِ

    إنْ قومه لم يبذلوا الأرواحا

    O zeal of God, be angry for His Book

    If His people did not sacrifice souls

  18. يا أيها الثوار هذا يومكمْ

    فإذا انقضى لا تدركون فلاحا

    O you rebels, this is your day

    If it passes you will not attain success

  19. إنَّ المواثق والعهود تمخضتْ

    عن شَوْبِ مكر عاد بعد مراحا

    Behold, the covenants and pacts turned out

    To conceal a cunning ploy returning to scorn

  20. حلفاؤكمْ حسبوا البلادَ غنيمةً

    جادوا بها إذْ قسَّموا الأرباحا

    Your allies reckoned the country spoils

    Dealing it out when dividing profits

  21. الحكمُ لله المهيمن لا لهمْ

    ذلّ الذي يلقي الغداةَ سلاحا

    Judgment belongs to God, the All-Compeller, not them

    He who throws down arms with the morning light

  22. لا خيرَ في وَطنٍ وَلا في أَهله

    ما دام محتل الذرى مجتاحا

    No good in a homeland or its people

    As long as the prey-seizing occupier roams

  23. ما زلتُمُ في فسحةٍ من أمرِكم

    كي تبعثوها غارةً ملحاحا

    You have persisted in ease from your affair

    That you may send it out as a night raid

  24. هي جولةٌ لا تنجلي إلاّ وقدْ

    بلغتْ بها نفسُ الأبيّ نجاحا

    A round that does not fade away but rather

    Reaches the aspiring soul’s success

  25. بل ليلةٌ ظلماءُ دانٍ صبحُها

    حمد السُرى من أدرك الأصباحا

    Nay a dark night whose morning

    The captives praise for reaching daybreak

  26. أين الكتائبُ منكمُ رجراجةً

    تذر الروابيَ والتلاعَ بطاحا

    Where are the regiments among you glittering

    Scattering the hilltops and ruins with might

  27. أين الأسنّةُ والرماح شواجراً

    عقدتْ عَلى مهجِ العدو نكاحا

    Where are the keen tongues and spears bristling

    That tie the enemy’s brain into knots

  28. الموتُ أربحُ صفقة من عيشةٍ

    مِنْ أسرِها لا ترتجون سراحا

    Death is a more profitable deal than a life

    Of captivity from which you hope not for release

  29. قل للأُلى يتربصون بنا الردى

    ما كل من أدلى الدلاءَ امتاحا

    Say to those lying in wait to bring us low

    Not everyone who bared his fangs prevailed

  30. تَرِبَتْ يدا من يبتغي إذلالَنا

    أودى به عادي الغرورِ وَطاحا

    May the hand of him who seeks to humiliate us

    Perish, and the Arrogant Misleader fall flat
