1. لزوالٍ جميعُ ما أنتَ رائي

    فاعتبرْ بالظلالِ والأفياءِ

    For the passing of all that you see

    So learn from the shadows and signs

  2. ما اختلافُ النهارِ والليلِ إلاّ

    كاختلافِ السيوفِ في الهيجاءِ

    The difference of night and day is but

    Like the crossing of swords in battle

  3. تطلعُ الشمسُ ثم تغربُ في أث

    وابِ جانٍ مخضوبة بالدماءِ

    The sun rises then sets in tears

    Of blood-stained tents of beautiful girls

  4. وَكأَنَّ السماءَ تخشى اللَّيالي

    حين تبدو بنثرةٍ حصداءِ

    And it's as though the sky fears the nights

    When it shows with a harvested pallor

  5. وَكأَنَّ الحياةَ جرْمٌ وَما لل

    حيِّ إلاّ وِرْدُ الردى من جزاءِ

    And it's as though life's a crime and the living

    Have only the fruit of decay as reward

  6. حسراتٌ تحت الترابِ ظماءٌ

    فجَّرتْ في الصفا عيونَ الماءِ

    Regrets under the soil, thirst

    Made the plains' eyes well with water

  7. كلُّ غصنٍ في الأرضِ ينبت رمزٌ

    لِبِلى كلِّ قامةٍ هيفاءِ

    Each branch in the earth grows as a symbol

    Of the wearing away of the slender form

  8. والأزاهيرُ بهجةً وَسناءً

    من وجوهٍ تحت الترابِ وِضاءِ

    And flowers are joy and delight

    Of faces under dust, shining white

  9. وَكأنَّ الزمانَ كيرٌ وَأَنفا

    سُ الورى بين أَخذه والعطاءِ

    And it's as though time takes and gives

    Souls of men in this taking and giving

  10. تتكافا الحياةُ أَخذاً وَرَدَّاً

    فنفوسُ الورى بهذا الهواءِ

    Life exchanges taking and giving

    And so souls are by this air riven

  11. هو لَوْ لَمْ يأْخذْ نفوسَ البرايا

    ضنَّ حتى بالنفحةِ السجواءِ

    If it didn't take souls of the innocent

    It would be miserly of even a slight breath

  12. مبتغي أُسوةٍ بكلِّ حزينٍ

    مستعينٌ بالداءِ لا بالدواءِ

    Seeking solace in every mournful soul

    Helped by the sickness, not the cure

  13. يأْمرُ اللبُّ بالتصبرِ لكنْ

    ليس يقضي بسلوةٍ بلهاءِ

    Reason bids to be patient but

    Doesn't allot tranquility, only turmoil

  14. ربما يصبرُ الحزينُ وَلكنْ

    صبرُ عينٍ عَلَى القذى رمداءِ

    The mournful may show patience but

    A sore eye's patience towards grit - decayed

  15. طالَ صمتي حتى لقد ظَنَّه النا

    سُ عزاءً وَلاتَ حين عزاءِ

    My silence grew so long that people thought it

    Condolence, though it was not, when condoling

  16. إِنَّ للحزنِ غصَّةً تمنعُ البا

    كيَ مِنْ رفعِ صوتِه بالبكاءِ

    Grief has a lump that stops the weeping

    From raising their voices in crying

  17. طولُ عيشِ المفجوعِ مهما تأَسّى

    بعد فقدِ الأَحبابِ طولُ عناءِ

    However long the bereft live, after

    Losing loved ones, it is length of torment

  18. أَلَمُ الجرحِ حين يبردُ والمذ

    بوحُ آلامُه بطولِ الذَّماءِ

    The pain of a wound when it grows cold and tells

    Of its agonies in time is the worst

  19. دمُ قلبي وَفيضُ دمعي وَأنفا

    سي تجارتْ قصيدةً في الرثاءِ

    The blood of my heart and the flood of my tears

    And my soul have composed an elegy of bereavement

  20. هي عذراءُ من ملائكةِ الشع

    رِ بناتِ الإلهامِ والإيحاءِ

    She is a virgin of the angels of poetry

    Daughters of inspiration and its whispering

  21. أَرسلتْ دمعَها سخياً وَما يُش

    جي وَيُبكي كأَدمعِ العذراءِ

    She sent her tears generously, and what

    Makes one shed tears like a virgin's tears
