1. هبَّ للذكر وَصفَّ القدما

    ثم وَلّى وَجهه شطر السما

    He urged the mention and described the steps

    Then he turned his face towards the sky

  2. باتَ في حيرتِه مستسلما

    وَله دمعٌ عَلَى النحرِ يفيضْ

    He spent the night perplexed and resigned

    With tears flowing down his throat

  3. لا يغيضْ

    طالما قلَّبَ وجهاً في السماءِ

    That would not dry

    He flipped through the faces in the sky for long

  4. وَسوادُ الليلِ منشورُ اللواءِ

    وَأَجالَ الطرفَ في ذاكَ الفضاءِ

    The blackness of night - the banner holder

    And cast his gaze into that space

  5. حائرَ الخطوِ شمالاً وَيمينْ

    ذا أَنينْ

    Confused which way to go - left or right

    Moaning

  6. كلّما الليلُ تمطَّى وَاعتكرْ

    أَدرك الأَسرارَ سِرّاً بعد سرْ

    Whenever the night wore its cloak

    He realized the secrets, one after another

  7. ليس بدعاً إِنما نورُ البصر

    في سوادٍ وَكذا نور الفؤادْ

    It's no wonder, indeed the sight's light

    Is in the darkness, and so is the heart's light

  8. في سوادْ

    إيه ما أَبلغَ هدآت الظلامِ

    In the darkness

    Oh how eloquent is the tranquility of darkness

  9. ربما نابَ سكوتٌ عن كلامِ

    وَلكم أَفصحَ صمتٌ عن مرامِ

    Perhaps silence prevailed over speech

    And how expressive is the silence of intention

  10. فاستمعْ لليلِ يدعو بالسكوتْ

    للقنوتْ

    So listen to the night calling for prayer

    With silence

  11. أَيها النائمُ عن ليليَ قمْ

    تَرَ أَنَّ الليلَ كالبحرِ الخضمْ

    O you asleep to my night, arise

    See the night is like a tumultuous sea

  12. وَسواري السحبِ موجٌ يلتطمْ

    قمْ وَشاهدْ مظهراً من ذي الجلالِ

    And the clouds are waves clashing

    Get up and witness an aspect of the Majestic

  13. في الليالي

    فسوادُ الليلِ سرُّ الجبروتِ

    In the nights

    The blackness of night is the secret of omnipotence

  14. وَاضطرابُ النجمِ سرٌّ كالغيوبِ

    فاستجرْ بالله رب الملكوت

    And the turbulence of stars is a secret like the disappearance

    So seek refuge in God, the Lord of the heavens

  15. وَتدبرْ آيةَ الليلِ الرهيبْ

    إِذ يهيبْ

    And ponder the magnificent sign of night

    As it calls awe

  16. قرعةُ الناقوسِ مع صوتِ الأَذانِ

    أين من شجوهما صوتُ المثاني

    The bell's ring with the call to prayer

    Where is the lament of singers compared to their voices

  17. فلقد والله وَهْناً أَبكياني

    لَحَنَ الأَولُ والثاني جهرْ

    By God they made me weep

    The first and second openly exclaimed

  18. الله أَكبرْ

    طأْطأ الصفافُ رأْسَ الخاضعِ

    God is Great

    The proud bowed their heads

  19. رَفَعَ الكرمُ أَكفَّ الضارعِ

    أَغمضَ النرجسُ عينَ الخاشعِ

    Generosity raised the palms of the pleading

    Narcissism closed the eye of the shy

  20. إذ تلا القمْريُّ وِرْدَ السحرِ

    في الشجرِ

    As Al-Qumri recited the dawn litany

    In the trees

  21. وفراخٍ عرزمتْ إِذْ سجعا

    كثقاةٍ أَمَّنتْ بعد الدعا

    And fledglings twittered as they prayed

    Like warblers feeling safe after supplication

  22. فاكشفِ اللهم عنها الفزعا

    وَقِها يا ربُّ شرَّ الحابلِ

    Oh God, remove their distress

    And protect them, O Lord, from the evils

  23. وَالنابلِ

    رَبّ بابُ القولِ دوني مرتجُ

    Of the archers and spearmen

    Lord, the door of speech is confused in me

  24. أَيَّ نهجٍ في صلاتي أَنهج

    فتقبلْ نفساً يختلجُ

    Which approach in my prayer should I take

    So accept a soul writhed

  25. بأنينِ صدري ولهاتي

    في صلاتي

    By the moan of my chest and my sighs

    In my prayers

  26. من ظلام الريبِ ريبُ الملحدينْ

    قدْ تنورت سنا الحقِ المبينْ

    From the darkness of doubt, the doubt of atheists

    The clear truth has illuminated their years

  27. من لظى الشكِ إلى برد اليقين

    رحلةٌ نلتُ بها حلو المنى

    From the intense skepticism to the cool certainty

    A journey I took to attain the sweet purpose

  28. بعد العنا

    هبْ ليَ اللّهم في كل أُموري

    After hardship

    Inspire me, O God, in all my affairs

  29. ثقةً بالنفسي من غيرِ غرور

    وتكفلْ صدقَ حدْسي وشعوري

    With confidence in myself without arrogance

    And ensure the truth of my senses and feelings

  30. واجعلِ اللّهم للحقِ جناني

    وَلساني

    And make my tongue, O God, a guardian

    For the truth

  31. أشعرِ اللّهم نفسي أنْ تعفْ

    وَفؤادي بغرامي أنْ يرفّْ

    Make me feel, O God, that I should be chaste

    And let my heart overflow with passion

  32. وإذا ما ناءَ يوما فوقفْ

    فلتكنْ نفسيَ مثلافاً لحبي

    And if one day it comes to a stop

    Then let my soul be in love for my love

  33. عند ربي

    رحمةُ الرحمنِ للمستضعفِ

    In presence of my Lord

    The mercy of the Merciful is for the weak

  34. فهو للأرزاءِ مثل الهدفِ

    سامه الأقوى ولم يستعففِ

    It is to the helpless like an aim

    It tolerated the strong without humbling him

  35. غارة الليثِ وغدر الأطلسِ

    في الغلس

    The lion's attack and the Atlas betrayal

    In deception

  36. أَدمعُ العطفِ ولهفاتُ الحنانِ

    ودواعي الرفقِ في كل جنانِ

    The tears of kindness and the longings of affection

    And the calls for gentleness in every paradise

  37. نِعَمٌ أكبرُ من شكرِ اللسانِ

    رب أوزعنيَ أنْ أشكرَ لكْ

    Blessings greater than the thanks of the tongue

    Lord, enable me to thank You

  38. نِعمَكْ

    كلُّ شيءٍ في السماوات العُلى

    For Your blessings

    Everything in the highest heavens

  39. وَعَلى الأرض وما بينهما

    جلَّ أَو دقَّ وما تحت الثرى

    And on earth and what lies between

    Insignificant or precise, and what lies beneath the soil

  40. شاهد الله باللطف الجلي

    وَالخفي

    Is a witness to God's clear and hidden grace

    All the beauty effects in the universe

  41. كل ما في الكونِ من حسنِ الأَثرْ

    هو من قوةِ خلاّقِ البشرْ

    Are from the power of mankind's Creator

    God's power is for good, not evil

  42. قدرةُ الله لخيرٍ لا لِشر

    وإذا ما قدَّرَ المرءُ ظلمْ

    And if man is destined for injustice and tyranny

    It shakes him

  43. وَاحتكمْ

    هزَّه الشوقُ وهاجَ الشجنا

    Yearning shook him and passion provoked him

    As winds shook and felled a tree

  44. مثلما هزَّتْ رياحٌ فننا

    فدعا من بعد سِرٍّ علنا

    Then he openly called after a secret affair

    And privately implored his Glorious and Majestic Lord, pleading

  45. ثم ناجى ربه عزّ وجلّْ

    وَابتهلْ

    Saying: My Lord show me, let me look upon You

    My soul longed for closeness to You

  46. قال رب أرني أنظرْ إليكْ

    حنّتِ النفسُ إلى الزلفى لديكْ

    And it always stopped for You

    Since You revealed Yourself to it from

  47. وهواها لم يزلْ وقفاً عليكْ

    مذ تجلّيتَ عليها من علِ

    Highness in pre-eternity

    Thus the call rang from the sanctuary of holiness

  48. في الأَزلِ

    فعلا من حضرةِ القدس النداءْ

    In the tranquility of night that loyalty was due

    When the light of the meeting dawned on him

  49. في سكونِ الليل أنْ حانَ الوفاءْ

    حينما لاح له نورُ اللقاءْ

    The onlooker was humbled, and the skin shuddered and he fell

    He fell unconscious, bowing his forehead

  50. خشع الناظرُ والجلدُ اقشعرْ

    ثم خرّْ

    Like birds stunned by an ambush

    He became just flowing tears

  51. خرّ مغشياً عليه للجبينْ

    مثل شِلْوِ الطير أصماه الكمينْ

    Uttering nothing but a fluttering heart

    And kindling

  52. صار والجسم سوى دمعٍ سخين

    هادثاً إِلاّ فؤاداً يضطربْ
