1. عذيري من حليفٍ ذي خصالِ

    بذائِعُها تجلُّ عن المثالِ

    My excuse to an ally of noble traits

    Whose fame shines beyond any ideal

  2. أتى ضيفاً فأصبحَ ربَّ بيتٍ

    يحكَّمُ بالقطينِ وبالميال

    Who came as a guest but became house master

    Ruling with his rod and plumb line

  3. وسمّى نفسَه قَسْراً وصيّاً

    عليَّ مفوّضاً في كلّ حال

    And named himself trustee by force

    With full authority in any case

  4. وَما أنا باليتيم ولم أكُنْهُ

    ولا شيخٌ دقيق العظمِ بال

    Yet I'm no orphan, nor a feeble old man

    With delicate, skinny bones

  5. وسمّى نفسَه دهراً وليّاً

    فساواني بربّاتِ الحِجال

    And named himself my lifetime guardian

    So he equaled me with old maids

  6. ومنتدياً عليَّ برغمِ أنفي

    ولستُ بقاصرٍ يوم النزال

    And acted superior to me against my will

    Yet I'm no minor on day of strife

  7. يضنُّ عليَّ من مالي وَيسخو

    عَلَى غيري بميرائي ومالي

    Stingy with my money, spendthrift on others

    With my assets and riches

  8. يعلمني الخشونةَ في معاشي

    وَيَنْعَمُ بالأطايبِ من غلالي

    Teaching me frugality in my livelihood

    While enjoying delicacies from my yields

  9. وَيحملني عَلَى زهْدٍ مريرٍ

    ويأخذُ كلّ مرتخصٍ وَغالي

    And pushing me to bitter asceticism

    While taking anything cheap or expensive

  10. وَيأبى لي الغنى كَسْباً حلالاً

    وَيأْخذُ بالحرام أو الحلال

    And denying me legal, clean earnings

    While taking the forbidden or the lawful

  11. وَأخوف ما يخاف عليَّ منه

    وَينذرني به شرَّ الوبال

    What I dread most that he warns against

    And alerts me of terrible consequences

  12. هو الذهبُ الذي جمعتْ جُدودي

    عَلَى الأيامِ والحججِ الخوالي

    Is the gold my ancestors had collected

    Over days and times long past

  13. نفضتُ له الجرابَ وكلَّ جيبٍ

    وقَوْصرةٍ وَما تحت الرحال

    I emptied my purse and pockets

    And whatever was in my saddlebags

  14. فبدّلني جزاه الله عني

    عَلَى حسبِ المقاصدِ والفعال

    Yet, may God reward him for me

    According to his intentions and actions

  15. قراطيساً عليها (رأس مهرٍ)

    وَقاها الله من (رأْس الغزال)

    He changed it all into papers

    Stamped with "capital asset"

  16. تطيرُ مع الهوا يوماً وَيوماً

    تذوبُ إذا أُصيبتُ بالبلال

    May God protect it from "antelope head"

    Flying away daily in the winds

  17. وتأكلُ نفسَها إنْ لم ينلها

    فسادُ العثِّ أو قرض النمال

    Melting if touched by moisture

    Or nibbled by booklice

  18. وَتنقضُ وَهي في جيبي وَتبلى

    فأرثي للنواقص والبوالي

    Crumbling while still in my pocket

    So I mourn for losses and ruin

  19. وَتعجز كالعجائز عن صعودٍ

    وتهبط للبلى بخطىً عجال

    Powerless to climb like the elderly

    Descending in haste to decay

  20. رَعى سِربي فأجَدَبَ كلَّ مرعى

    فكاد يموت عن فَرْطِ الهزال

    He herded my flock till pastures withered

    And livestock neared death from emaciation

  21. وَباعدَ بين إخوانٍ وَأهلٍ

    فلجّوا في التقاطعِ والتَقالي

    And caused rift between siblings and family

    So they separated and broke ties

  22. وشاركني فكان الغُرمَ حظي

    وَخُصِّصَ بالغنيمَةِ والنوال

    He shared with me, taking the loot as his luck

    Keeping the spoils and bounty

  23. ومن حبِ السلامِ حوى سلاحي

    ليكفيني ممارسةَ القتال

    Out of love for peace, he took my weapons

    To spare me from fighting

  24. وأنقض بعد ذا ظهري بعبءٍ

    يؤودُ الراسيات من الجبال

    After that he burdened my back

    With a load to crush mountain peaks

  25. فدرّبني عَلى حملِ الرزايا

    وَأوصاني بصبرٍ واحتمال

    So he trained me to bear calamities

    And taught me patience and endurance

  26. وكَمَّ فمي عن الشكوى لكيلا

    يسير بغيبةٍ يوماً مقالي

    And gagged my mouth lest I complain

    Or gossip spreads one day about me

  27. وَأحرجني فأخرجني فلما

    رآني بالمنية لا أُبالي

    And embarrassed me till I left

    But when he saw me unbothered

  28. دعاني للتفاهم بعد أخذٍ

    وَردٍّ واختلافٍ واقتتال

    He called me to reconcile after snubbing

    And dispute and fighting

  29. وَعانقني بزنديه احتفاءً

    وصافحني بهزٍ واحتفال

    And hugged me gleefully

    And shook my hand ceremoniously

  30. فطوّقني بأدهى من أفاعي

    وَشَدَّ يدي عَلَى حدِّ النصال

    But shackled me worse than snakes

    And tied my hands like slaughtered chickens

  31. وهشَّ وبشَّ مبتسماً فيا مَنْ

    رأى ذئباً تبسَّم للسِخال

    Then simpered like a wolf smiling

    At a lamb - what a vile beast!

  32. وأقْسمَ لا يفاوضنا إذا لمْ

    نظل من السكينةِ في ظلال

    And swore no deal if we don't

    Remain meekly in the shadows

  33. فخفَّضَ صوتَه حتى المنادي

    وما جهر المؤذنُ والمتالي

    Lowering his voice below a caller's

    Unlike a muezzin's or auctioneer's

  34. وعاهدني وسمّاني حليفاً

    فَلَمْ أشققْ عليه ولم أُغال

    And swore alliance and named me an ally

    So I didn't break faith or act greedy

  35. تقبّلتُ القليلَ النَزْرَ وعداً

    يكدر بالتعللِ والمطال

    I accepted the measly trickle of promise

    Soured by excuses and delays

  36. وليس لغلةِ الصادي شفاءٌ

    ببرقٍ خلَّبٍ أو لمع آل

    No healing for stab of traitor

    With deceitful flashes or glimmers

  37. وواعدني إلى أجلٍ مسمى

    يكون قضاؤه عهدَ انتقال

    And promised me a fixed date

    When his rule will end

  38. فكاد يكون من مكرٍ وكيدٍ

    ودسٍ عصر فوضى واختلال

    Nearly a plot and scheme

    And slyness of chaotic lawless times

  39. لقينا في سبيل العهدِ ما لَمْ

    نلاق مِنْ انتدابٍ واحتلال

    We met such as was never met

    During delegation and occupation

  40. فكم من حاذقٍ فَطِنٍ تغابى

    وداهيةٍ تظاهر بالخبال

    So many sly experts vanished

    And villains pretended to be fools

  41. وكم من ضابطٍ أو مستشارٍ

    تحذلق بالتجنّي والدلال

    And counselors and advisors bluffed

    With civility and diplomacy

  42. تحدانا معاكسةً وكيداً

    وَأعيانا بأشباهِ الرجال

    They challenged us defiantly and cunningly

    Mobilizing riffraff and scoundrels

  43. وَخامَرَ كلَّ فَدْمٍ أو زنيمٍ

    وَشايَع من طواغيتِ الضلال

    Seduced every rogue and bootlicker

    And spread myths of heresy's tyrants

  44. أتذكرُ إذْ تجنّى الذئبُ يوماً

    عَلى حَمَلٍ بتكديرِ الزلال؟

    I remember when the wolf once

    Disturbed a flock with murky water

  45. إذا استنجزت مَنْ عاهدتَ وَعداً

    تشاغل بالتنحنحِ والسُعال

    When you fulfill a pledge to one promised

    You preoccupy with coughing and throat-clearing

  46. ويسمعني إذا استوضحت منه

    وليس بشاعرٍ لغةَ الخيال

    And listens when I ask for clarification

    Though he knows not the language of imagination

  47. يقول الإنكليز أبَتْ وَهذي

    جيوشُ التركِ تنذر بالصيال

    The British say no, and Turkish armies

    Threaten with bared swords

  48. وَما يدريك أن يحتجَّ ناس

    عَلَى التصديقِ في القطب الشمالي؟

    What do you know, some folks

    Protest believing the North Pole?

  49. وَجرّدَ سيفَه عشرين عاماً

    لتأديبِ (العصاة) من الأهالي

    He brandished his sword for twenty years

    To discipline the "rebels" among the locals

  50. فلما اجتاحتِ الغرباءُ داري

    شكا السيفَ الجزازَ من الكلال

    But when the foreigners invaded my home

    His sword complained of weariness

  51. سلِ (الإسكندرونة) عن أُمورٍ

    من الإغرابِ لم تخطرْ ببال

    Ask Alexandria about strange affairs

    That never crossed the mind

  52. أمِن إربِ السياسةِ خذلُ حلفٍ

    وإيثارُ الخصيمِ عَلَى المُوالي؟

    Is it politics' bane to break a pact

    And prefer the opponent over loyalists?

  53. وَربّ روايةٍ سمجتْ وَطالتْ

    بأطرافِ (الجزيرة) والأعالي

    What full "tales" spread and prolonged

    Through peninsula highlands!

  54. أليس من السماجةِ أن صوتَ ال

    ملقنِ من وراء الستر عال؟

    Isn't it foolish for prompting voice

    To come from behind a screen?

  55. وأشخاص الروايةِ من ذكورٍ

    ونسوانٍ قرود أو سَعالُ

    And fictional characters of the tale

    Are monkeys, jerboas, or ostriches

  56. نَزَتْ تَسْتَنُّ في الميدانِ جربى

    وقرعى والعجاف من الفصال

    They came down to scavenge the battlefield

    Rodents, hedgehogs, and snakes in the dens

  57. وأحجمتِ العتاقُ منَ المذاكي

    تملْمل في اللِّجامِ وبالشِكال

    The steeds turned away from the barns

    Fretting in the reins and fences

  58. أتحرقني بنفطي في بلادي

    وَتورثُها الصعاليك الجوالي؟

    Will you burn me with my fuel in my land

    And bequeath it to roaming thugs?

  59. ولم أذنبْ وَما قارفتُ إثْماً

    سوى أني وَصلتُ بكُمْ حِبالي

    I committed no sin or crime

    Except joining you with my ropes

  60. هبوا أنَّ الأصاغرَ خالفونا

    فَلِمْ تصغون للهمجِ الضئال

    Suppose the young opposed us

    Why heed the vulgar and vile?

  61. ولم تخلُ الملائكُ من رجيمٍ

    فهلْ تخلو الشعوبُ من الرذال؟

    Even angels include an outcast

    Do nations lack lowlifes?

  62. بعثنا بالأمينِ لكم ومن ذا

    يساوي بالأمين (أبا رِغال)؟

    We sent you an honest trustee

    Who can match the trustee (Abu Rigal)?

  63. أقول ونحن في عهدِ التَّصافي

    سقاك الله يا عهدَ النِّضال

    I say while in the era of harmony

    May God quench your thirst, O era of struggle

  64. ولَمْ تخلُ السياسةُ من خداعٍ

    وما كلُّ السياسةِ باحتِيال

    Politics never lacks deceit

    Though not all politics is but fraud

  65. ألا قلْ للرَّسولِ بلغت عُذْراً

    وكنتَ في السَّوابقِ في المجال

    Tell the messenger I made an excuse

    And you were stellar on the course

  66. سَمَتْ لكَ في النَّوازِلِ كلُّ عينٍ

    كما تسمو العيونُ إلى الهلال

    Eyes raced you in tribulations

    Like eyes gaze toward the crescent

  67. أيرفضُ غابنٌ طمعاً ويرضى

    غبينٌ؟ ذاك من عَنَتِ اللَّيالي

    Does a traitor from greed refuse

    And a wronged one accept? That is obstinacy's essence!

  68. ويعطي باليمينِ عطاءَ كزٍّ

    ويأخذُ بعدَ لأيٍ بالشمال؟

    Giving generously with the right hand

    Then seizing with the left hand after refusal?

  69. ويلحق في كتابِ العهدِ ذيلاً

    كذيلِ الضَّبِّ ذي عَقدٍ طوال؟

    Adding an appendix to the pact's book

    Like a lizard's tail, long and curled?

  70. ألا فانبذْ إليهِ عَلَى سواءٍ

    ولا تلحفْ عليه في السؤال

    Come, convey to him equally

    Don't covers up in questioning

  71. وإنْ جادلتَ في أمرٍ فَأجْمِلْ

    فما استقْصى كريمٌ في الجدال

    If you dispute something then speak well

    No noble person probes in debate

  72. فما أنا بالحريص عَلَى وصالٍ

    إذا ما باتَ يرغبُ عن وِصالي

    I don't crave a union

    If he wishes to abandon me

  73. فكمْ مِنْ عاشقٍ جافى محبّاً

    تَجاوَزَ في دَلالٍ واعتلال

    So many a lover shunned a beloved

    Exceeding in sickness and anguish

  74. ولولا أن يقالَ: النَّقضُ نقضٌ

    لقلتُ له أقِلني قَدْ بدالي

    If not for being called pact-breaker

    I'd tell him, "Relieve me, for I have changed"

  75. رأيتُ الداءَ أعْضَلَ دونَ كَيٍّ

    فأينَ الكَيُّ للداءِ العِضال

    I saw the disease disable without a cure

    Where is the cure for the chronic disease?

  76. أما لك قد شببْتَ كما أقروا

    عن الأطواقِ فانشطْ مِنْ عِقال

    Haven't you, as they admitted, recovered

    From the shackles? So break free from the tether!
