1. أَنا لستُ أدري كيف أرثي واحداً

    أَمسى برغمِ الموتِ حيا خالداً

    I know not how to eulogize one

    Who became immortal despite death

  2. أَبقى من (الأهرام) في آثارِه

    وَأجل مأثرةً وَأبلغ شاهدا

    Remaining in his works more enduring

    Than the pyramids, a glorious, eloquent witness

  3. دبَّ الفناءُ له فعاد بخيبةٍ

    خزيانَ ينظرُ مستشيطاً حاقدا

    Time crept up to destroy him, but retreated disappointed

    Looking on, furious and spiteful

  4. ما نال منه وَلو علاه سكونُه

    فالبحرُ بحرٌ زاخراً أو راكدا

    It could not touch him, even if it stilled him

    For the sea remains a bountiful or placid sea

  5. شوقي وَهل أَرثيه يومَ خلودِه

    فالسيفُ يبغي شاهراً لا غامدا

    Shawqi, how can I mourn him on his day of eternity

    When the sword seeks a brandisher, not a sheath

  6. دعني أُشدْ بالعبقريةِ إنَّها

    كالشمسِ إنْ غربتْ أرتك فراقدا

    Let me sing of genius, for it is

    Like the sun - when it sets, it leaves a twilight

  7. أَو شعلة لمعتْ فجلَّتْ غيهباً

    وَهدتْ أخا جوْرٍ وَردَّتْ حائدا

    Or a flame that flashed and lit up the horizon

    Guiding an oppressed brother and returning a stray

  8. تتمخّضُ الأجيالُ أعصاراً بها

    حتى يتيح الغيبُ منها وافدا

    Generations gestate storms within them

    Until the unknown sends forth one of its own

  9. كالبحرِ يندرُ أنْ يجودَ بدرِّه

    وَتراه بالأَصدافِ يقذِفُ جائدا

    Like the sea, it rarely casts up its pearls

    And you see it tossing refuse upon the shore

  10. فإذا أَراد اللهُ نهضةَ أُمةٍ

    أهدى إليها العبقريةَ قائدا

    So if God wills the renaissance of a nation

    He guides genius to it as a leader

  11. شوقي وَأنتَ رسالةٌ علويةٌ

    مرَّتْ عَلَى سمعِ الزمانِ نشائدا

    Shawqi, you were a divine message

    That coursed through the ears of time chanting verses

  12. روحٌ من اللهِ الكريمِ وَرحمةٌ

    أَحيا بها مَيْتاً وَأيقظَ هاجدا

    A soul from Generous God and a mercy

    With which He revived the dead and awakened the prostrate

  13. رُضْتَ القريضَ عَلَى اختلافِ فنونِه

    في كل وادٍ همْتَ كنتَ الراشدا

    You mastered poetry in all its forms

    In every valley you roamed, you were rightly guided

  14. أما القديمُ ففزتَ منه بروعةٍ

    وَجلوتَ من آيِ الجديدِ مشاهدا

    Of the old, you grasped the essence

    And from the new, you extracted insightful tableaux

  15. فرفعتَ للفصحى (بمصرٍ) دولةً

    كانتْ تطالع فيك نجماً صاعدا

    You raised the Arabic language in Egypt to a kingdom

    It saw within you a rising star

  16. توَّجْتَ (مصر) وَشدتَ عرشَ فخارِها

    وَعقدتَ في جيدِ (الشآم) قلائدا

    You crowned Egypt and buttressed the throne of its pride

    And adorned the neck of Damascus with necklaces

  17. للعربِ والإسلامِ في آلامِهمْ

    كنتَ اللسانَ مترجماً والساعدا

    For the Arabs and Islam in their sorrows

    You were the eloquent tongue and helping hand

  18. أضحى بيانُك جامعاً أَهواءَهمْ

    ومن الخمولِ إلى النباهةِ رائدا

    Your rhetoric united their various passions

    And led from lethargy to awareness as guide

  19. ما أَقْلَقَ الإسلامَ خطبٌ فادحٌ

    إلا نهضتَ مواسيا أو ذائدا

    No grave calamity disturbed Islam

    Without you rising in consolation or defence

  20. "وَدعوتَ للخلقِ الكريم؛ وشر ما"

    أَودى بنا قد كان خلقاً فاسدا

    "You called people to noble character; and the worst"

    Destruction upon us was the work of the corrupt

  21. ما زالَ فينا مَنْ يكيدُ لقومِهِ

    كم ذا نُطيقُ مداجياً أو كائدا

    Among us there remain those who conspire against their people

    How much backbiting and plotting can we bear?

  22. كم موقِفٍ لك في (دمشق) وأهلها

    قدْ هزَّ يقظاناً ونبَّه راقِدا

    How many stands you took in Damascus and its people

    Rousing the vigilant and awakening the sleeping

  23. غَنَّيْتَها لَحناً يفيضُ صَبابةً

    فتمايلتْ فيها الغُصونُ تواجُدا

    You sang it a melody brimming with youth

    In which the branches swayed, keeping time

  24. وشَركْتَها في بُؤْسِها ونعيمها

    يا مَنْ رأى ولداً يشاطر والدا

    You shared in its sorrows and joys

    O you who saw a son sharing with his father!

  25. في الجامعِ الأُمويِّ قُمتَ مكَبِّراً

    وذكرْتَ مجدَ بني (أُميَّةَ) ساجدا

    In the Umayyad Mosque you stood, magnifying

    And recalled the glory of Umayya's descendants in prayer

  26. خلَّفتَ في (الزهراءِ) دمعَك جاريا

    وتركْتَ في (الفيحاءِ) قلبَكَ واجدا

    You left your tears flowing in Az-Zahraa

    And your heart ardently burning in Al-Faihaa

  27. واسَيْتَ (جلَّق) في عظيمِ مُصابِها

    وَنضحتَ عنها بالبيان مُجاهدا

    You consoled Jallaq in its great calamity

    And defended it with eloquent resistance

  28. صعَّدتَ أَنفاساً وَجُدتَ بأَدمعٍ

    في يومِ محْنتِها فكُنَّ قصائدا

    You sent up souls consumed with tears

    On its day of tribulation, so they were like poems

  29. أَشْجاك أَنْ تُمسي الجنانُ بها لظىً

    وتبيت داراتُ النَّعيمِ مَراقدا

    Would that the gardens became infernos from them

    And the abodes of bliss overnight mass graves

  30. جعلوا مُنيفاتِ القصورِ ومَنْ بها

    للنّارِ في غَلسِ الظَّلامِ حصائدا

    They made the palaces' resting places, and those within

    Into prey for the flames in the dead of night

  31. عاثَتْ بها سودُ الوُجوهِ تَخالهمْ

    بين الطُّلولِ عقارِباً وأَساوِدا

    The black-faced swept through them, imagining themselves

    Among the masses like scorpions and serpents

  32. وأَشدُّ مِنْ هذا الزَّبانيةُ الأُولى

    كادوا لها يلقون عيشاً راغدا

    Worse still were the early tyrants

    Who almost made life for it tranquil and stable

  33. من كُلِّ عبدٍ للطُّغاةِ وحِزبهمْ

    وتراه شيطاناً علينا ماردا

    From each slave of the oppressors and their party

    You see in him a raging devil

  34. كم متعةٍ في عيشِها لو أَنَّهمْ

    ما كَدَّروه مصادراً ومَواردا

    What pleasures its life would have

    Had they not poisoned its springs and courses!

  35. هَيهاتَ لا تنسى صَنيعك إِنَّها

    جعلتْ بَلابِلَها لِساناً حامدا

    Alas! It will not forget your deeds

    For it has made its nightingales tongues in praise

  36. والآنَ دَعْ جفني يبحْ بشؤونِه

    فالدَّمْعُ أثقله كميناً جامدا

    And now let my eyelids pour with their sorrows

    For tears weigh heaviest when withheld

  37. وَذرِ الحزينَ يبثُّ بعضَ شكاتِه

    فالصدرُ يحرجُ بالهمومِ حواشدا

    Leave the grieving to vent some of their complaints

    For the heart recoils, congested with anxieties

  38. لكنْ أَخاف عليك تبريحَ الأَسى

    يوري عَلَى جنبيْك جمراً واقدا

    But I fear the outpouring of anguish upon you

    Shows glowing embers upon your sides

  39. فاربطْ عَلَى قلبٍ وَطأمنْ لوعةً

    واشددْ عَلَى كبدٍ وَصابر جاهدا

    So restrain a bursting heart, appease its torment

    Buckle down, steel a liver, and bravely endure

  40. يا ناشداً بالأَمسِ نوماً شارداً

    هلاّ نشدتَ اليوم صبراً نافدا

    O you who called yesterday for fleeting sleep

    Can you call today for lasting patience?

  41. خطبانِ قلبُ العرب قاسى منهما

    جرحاً يسيلُ دماً وَسهماً قاصدا

    Two calamities have pierced the Arabs' heart

    A bleeding wound and a well-aimed arrow

  42. ما جفَّ دمعُهمُ لمصرعِ (حافظ)

    حتى استهلَّ بيومِ (شوقي) واردا

    Their tears for Hafiz did not dry

    Before the day of Shawqi arrived

  43. لم أنسَ مؤتمر النساءِ وَقد نعى

    شوقي فظلَّ من التفجع مائدا

    I cannot forget the women's assembly eulogizing

    Shawqi, remaining flooded with grief

  44. ريعَ العقائلُ والأَوانسُ أَعولتْ

    وَنثرنَ من عبراتهن فرائدا

    The gentlewomen and maidens wailed

    And from their tears scattered elegies

  45. أوجعنَ لي قلبي وهجن مدامعي

    وتركن جفني للفجيعةِ ساهدا

    They pained my heart and reddened my tears

    And left my eyelids awake to the tragedy

  46. سرُّ الحياةِ يدقُّ عن فهم الورى

    حارَ اللبيبُ به فأطرق سامدا

    The secret of life eludes the mind's grasp

    The wise remained baffled, falling silent

  47. لولا رياضُ الشعرِ في صحرائها

    كانتْ جياتُك محنةً وَشدائدا

    Were it not for the gardens of poetry in the desert

    Your life would have been hardship and woes

  48. تدنو بأسبابِ الحياةِ إلى الردى

    أنّى اتجهتَ رأيت منه راصدا

    However you approached the instruments of life

    You saw one lying in wait for you

  49. والمرءُ في دنياه طيرٌ مانجا

    من صائدٍ إلاّ ليلقى صائدا

    A person in his world is a stray bird

    Fleeing from one hunter only to meet another

  50. دعْ عنك تمحيصَ الحقيقةِ إنها

    تدعُ الفتى في كل شيءٍ زاهدا

    Abandon analyzing the truth, for it

    Leaves one detached from all things

  51. وانصتْ إلى وَحي الخيالِ فإِنَّه

    لولاه كان العيش معنى باردا

    But listen to fancy's revelation

    Without which life would be frigid and meaningless

  52. وَإذا بكيتَ عَلَى امرىءٍ فابك الذي

    ملك البيان طريفَه والتالدا

    And if you weep for a person, then weep for one

    Who mastered eloquence, prolific and creative
