1. أما ترى تحيّةَ السحابِ

    أحيا نداها هامدَ الترابِ

    Do you not see the greeting of the clouds

    Reviving the dormant soil with its call

  2. فنفحتْ من الترابِ ريّا

    أفعل في النفسِ من الحميّا

    So it exhaled a gentle breeze

    That did more to my soul than heat

  3. أذكى من العبيرِ والمَلابِ

    كأنها رَوائِحُ الأحبابِ

    It awoke more than perfumes and rains

    As if it were the scents of loved ones

  4. لي نَفَسٌ ما سفتها عميقُ

    كأنه لطوله شهيقُ

    I have a soul that has not plunged deeply

    As if its length were but an intake of breath

  5. يا عجباً لطيب ريحِ التربِ

    إذا تَنَدّى بدموعِ السُحْبِ

    How wonderful the sweet smell of dust

    When the tears of rain moisten it

  6. أكانَ من تحيّةِ الغمامِ

    طيَّبة إلى الترابِ الظامي

    Was it from the greeting of the clouds

    Made fragrant to the dark earth?

  7. أَمْ تلك أنفاسُ الثرى ذكيه

    تشكرُ لمّا رَدَّتِ التحيّه

    Or was it the scented breaths of the soil

    Gratefully returning the greeting?

  8. أَم كان من صنيع كلٍ منهما

    حُرُّ الثرى أثْنى وَجادَ ابنُ السما

    Or was it the work of both together

    The free soil gave thanks and the son of the sky gave freely

  9. وَنفحةٍ في (دُمّرٍ) و (الربوه)

    فوّاحةٍ لها دبيبُ النشوه

    A breeze in Damascus and the meadows

    An aroma that has the murmur of joy

  10. دقَّتْ عن الأوصافِ والأسماء

    لكنّها رائحةُ (الفيحاءِ)

    It transcended descriptions and names

    Yet it was the scent of paradise

  11. روحٌ لمن يشمُّها وَريحانْ

    خصّتْ بها دمشقُ دون البلدانْ

    A spirit for whoever smells it, and a sweet basil

    Damascus was distinguished with it above all other cities

  12. تضوّعتْ حيثُ المياه الواكفه

    بين الظلالِ الضافيات الوارفه

    It perfumed where still waters lingered

    Among shades, abundant and overflowing

  13. طاب بها الترابُ والهواءُ

    وَعبقتْ بطيبها الأَرجاءُ

    The soil and air were scented with it

    And its sweetness filled the atmosphere
