1. ما لها تشرقُ حمرا أتراها

    مُقْلةً وَسنى أفاقتْ من كراها

    Why does it glow red, do you see it

    Restless, restless, it woke from its gloom

  2. فَتَحَ المشرقُ عنها جفنَ مَنْ

    بلغتْ منه الحميّا منتهاها

    The east opened its eyelid for it

    It reached the fervent heat at its end

  3. أمْ تراها شعلةً والسحبُ مِنْ

    فوقها مثل دخانٍ قَدْ علاها

    Or do you see it as a flame and the clouds

    Above it like smoke that rose high

  4. عُصرفتْ دارتُها فانقدتْ

    كشواظِ النارِ يستشري لظاها

    It circled around and shone bright

    Like embers spreading their glow

  5. وَنَضَتْ أثوابها الحمرَ عَلى

    جنباتِ الأُفقِ واستبقتْ حلاها

    Its red garments fluttered

    On the horizon’s flanks and donned its finest raiment

  6. فبدتْ عاريةً حاليةً

    فإذا وضاءَةٌ يعشي سناها

    It appeared bare, resplendent

    There shone a radiance that makes the years youthful

  7. ثبّتِ اللهم إيماني فقدْ

    ظنَّها يوماً أبو الرسل إِلها

    O God make firm my faith, for one day

    The messenger thought it a god

  8. أنتَ عظَّمتَ الضحى والشمسَ إذْ

    قلتَ (والشمس) يميناً (وضحاها)

    You exalted the dawn and the sun when

    You said “By the sun” and “By its brightness”

  9. نظرةً للشرقِ رَأدِ الضحى

    تَلْفَ من رونِقِهِ مالا يضاهى

    A glance to the east, the dawn’s splendor

    Has a charm that cannot be matched

  10. صوراً أَبدعَ مَن صوَّرها

    ماله أثبتها ثم محاها

    Paintings made by the greatest painter

    With a beauty made lasting then erased

  11. زينةٌ في الأُفق من بهجتها

    وَصلتْ ما بين أرض وَسماها

    An adornment on the horizon, its delight

    Joined the earth and its sky

  12. مَسَحَ النورُ دموع الليلِ عَنْ

    وجنْةِ الأزهارِ إذْ قبَّلَ فاها

    The light wiped the tears of night

    From the cheeks of flowers when it kissed them

  13. لجَّ في تقبيلها مستهتراً

    فيه فاحمرّتْ خدوداً وشفاها

    Lost in kissing them recklessly

    Their cheeks and lips blushed red

  14. كلُّ غصنِ مرسلٌ من ظلِّه

    ذَيْلَ مختالٍ عَلَى الأقران تاها

    Each loose branch in its shadow

    A vain tail fluttering over peers

  15. هي مرآةٌ عَلَى صفحتها

    نورُ وَجهِ الله مذْلاح جلاها

    It is a mirror on its surface

    God’s light glows bright in its polish

  16. وَلها في كل يوم رحلةٌ

    بين شرقِ الأرضِ والغربِ مداها

    Each day it travels

    Between east and west of earth

  17. لا تراها في مكانٍ واحدٍ

    وَمحالٌ أن ترى العينُ خطاها

    You cannot see it in one place

    Impossible for an eye to trace its steps

  18. وإذا ما اعترضَ الغيمُ لها

    نفذتْ داميةً منه ظباها

    If a cloud comes between it

    It penetrates, melting through the obstruction

  19. لم تزلْ وَهي التي شاهدها

    آدم، في عنفوانٍ من صباها

    Ever since Adam saw it

    In the prime of its youth

  20. كلُّ شيءٍ باسمٌ إنْ سَفَرَتْ

    فإذا ما احتجبتْ خلف غطاها

    Everything has a name, does it travel

    When hidden behind its coverings

  21. عَبَسَ الجوُّ اكتئاباً وَأَسى

    وَبدمعِ المزنِ من وَجدٍ بكاها

    The weather sulked mournfully

    Weeping, crying with misery

  22. حليةٌ تزهو السمواتُ العلى

    بسناها فإذا الغربُ طواها

    A jewel adorning the highest heavens

    With its brilliance, then veiled in the west

  23. بَثَّتِ النجمَ عيوناً خَلْفَها

    يتطلّعنَ إلى أينَ سراها

    It scattered the stars as eyes behind it

    Looking where it journeyed and strayed

  24. لَيْتَ شعري وَهي تُجلى للورى

    كل يوم بحلاها وَضياها

    Would that I knew, as it illuminates creation

    Each day with its beauty and glow

  25. هل ترى من قال فيها مثل ما

    قلته من سائراتٍ أو رواها؟

    Does it see one who spoke of it

    As I did, of the wanderers, and conveyed it?
