Is it easier that I die of my sickness

After I've come to know where my remedy lies

They brought the cunning healers, but they knew not

That the cure for my love sickness wasn't in their grasp

Oh You who examines the hearts for misguidance

Look and see, if you peer inside my chest

You'll find ribs fallen apart in disarray

Like the dunes that appear to the beholder's eye

As if the fire of love burns through its quarters

The flame that consumed Majnun at Layla's camp

I knew not that one who tastes of love's anguish

Is counted among the deceased, not the living

My God, in a soul split between despair and hope

In the blindness of your love, it lingers lost

I sent my eyes as a messenger, but they returned

With tidings of joyfulness and moans

I knew not that when filled with your beauty

It would fill too with tears and heartache

How strange your heart feels no tenderness for my state

As if it were made of deaf mute stone

I've endured, but not for mere patience

Rather, like one staunchly abstaining from water

No wrong have I done, known to you

So why this cruelty in how you punish me?

If my crime is loving you passionately

Why then does your beauty tempt the onlooker?

Do you recall that day on Dummar's hillside

When upon my hand your dress you laid?

When from the strain of our intimate talk

The branches of the bent banana tree swayed

Whispers I uttered as desire willed

When none were near us there to hear

Reproaches the like of which none have told

Save Juhha when she complained and cried

And anguished laments kindled your tenderness

After leaving the murmur of water, wailing aloud

My tears etched lines on your cheek

Sealed by a kiss, like mute Khursa's

By your mouth's sweet nectar, that best of cures

How the lips of fair ladies were put to shame

It was as if we, the lovers from Quta

Were picnicking together in a meadow

I had hopes of attaining my desires

If not for modesty's deterring rebukes

Like a dove calling her beloved, surrounded

By swaying bamboo and vast empty plains

Fate took him, and so she mourns his loss

Crying through the dawn and dusk

As if she, having lost her only child

    Appears grieving, dressed in black

Her tears seem turned to blood

I see you with reddened, tearful eyes

She let out an elegy upon our ears

More poignant and moving than Tae'iy's laments

Until the sun descended into the west

And the vanguard of the darkening army appeared

You flew away with my heart, to where I know not

For who can restore to me that which is lost?
