1. اعكفْ عَلَى جدثٍ في عدوةِ الوادي

    (بميسلون) سقاه الرائحُ الغادي

    Brood by a grave on the edge of the valley

    Watered by the passing breeze in Meisaloon

  2. وطأْطىءِ الرأسَ إجلالاً لمرقدِ مَنْ

    قضى له اللهُ تخليداً بإمجاد

    Bow your head in reverence at the tomb of one

    Whose glory Allah granted perpetuation

  3. واجعلْ تحيَّتَه عند الطوافِ به

    ريحانةَ النفسِ لا ريحانة الوادي

    Make your circumambulation greeting unto him

    A solace to your soul, not to the valley

  4. تحيةُ القبر لَو عدنا بسنَّتِها

    للجاهليَّةِ آبائي وأجدادي

    The tomb greeting - had we kept its tradition

    Would have returned my fathers and ancestors to paganism

  5. أَجللتُ مرقدَه عن عقْرِ راحلةٍ

    واخترتُ عقْراً له نفسي وأولادي

    I honored his tomb lest the mount of a rider be desecrated

    And chose to desecrate myself and my children instead

  6. بنا علَى يوسف إذْ حمَّ مصرعُه

    أَحزانُ (يعقوب) من خافٍ ومن باد

    Over Joseph we mourned when he met his death

    The sorrows of Jacob, fearful and distraught

  7. هوى وحلَّتُه حمراءُ من دمِه

    كالشمس حين هَوَتْ في ثوبها الجادي

    He fell, his coat dyed red with his blood

    Like the sun when it sets in its bloody garb

  8. صديان لم يرو حتى عبَّ من دمِه

    والهفَ نفسي له ربّان أو صادي

    The fawn had not quenched its thirst when his blood poured

    My soul bleats for him - is there a shepherd or hunter?

  9. في فتيةٍ نفروا للموتِ حين بدا

    جريدةً من زرافاتٍ وآجاد

    Among the youth who marched to their death when it loomed

    A battalion of giraffes and camels

  10. صلّى الإله عليهم من مجندلةٍ

    أشلاؤُهم بَيْنَ أغوارٍ وانجاد

    Allah's peace be upon them in al-Majandal

    Their limbs strewn between valleys and sands

  11. فَدى العروبةَ بالنفسِ التي كرمتْ

    يا رحمةَ اللهِ للمفديِّ والفادي

    He ransomed the Arabism that ennobled him

    O Allah's mercy upon the ransomed and redeemer

  12. وعاشَ ما عاشَ يحمينها ويحرسُها

    ومَاتَ يدفعُ عن حوزاتها العادي

    And he lived protecting and guarding it

    And died repelling the transgressor from its territory

  13. قد كان قائدها حَيّاً وجامعها

    مَيْتاً فبورِك في الحالين من هاد

    He gathered it in life as its leader

    And in death as well - so blessings in both states to the guide

  14. لا كالذين تولوا كبرَ نكبتِنا

    وطوَّقونا بِأغلالِ وأصفاد

    Not like those who assumed leadership in our greatest calamity

    And shackled us in chains and shackles

  15. بالأمسِ كانت إلى قحطانِ نسبتُهم

    واليوم يستنكرون النطقَ بالضاد

    Yesterday, their lineage was traced to Qahtan

    Today, they disavow the pronunciation of "Dhad"

  16. هم يدَّعون بأنَّ العقلَ رائدُهم

    وما دعوا لسوى غيٍّ وإفساد

    They claim that reason is their guide

    Yet they call not except to ruin and corruption

  17. أفي التّعقلِ أَنْ نبقى وموطنُنا

    سبيَّةٌ يصطفيها كلُّ مرتاد

    Is it reason to remain while our homeland

    Is captivity, picked at by every vagrant?

  18. أَعزبْ بعقلِك ليس العقلُ من أربي

    إن كان يقضي إلى ذلٍّ بإخلاد

    Let your reason, not unreasoned emotion, rule

    If it concludes with such disgrace and bondage

  19. يا دينَ قلبيَ من يومٍ ورى كبدي

    وَطَالَ همي لذكراه وتسهادي

    O religion of my heart since the day grief

    Afflicted my liver and prolonged my concern

  20. في ميسلون من الأشجان سلسلةٌ

    نيطتْ بأطرافِها أرجاءُ أرواد

    In Meisaloon, from the tree of sorrows, a chain hangs

    Its ends tied to the corners of shanties

  21. هل في سبيلٍ إلى الإنصافِ من زمنٍ

    جَلَّتْ رزاياه عن حصرٍ وَتعداد

    Is there a way to justice in an age

    Whose calamities surpass count and number?

  22. في مسمعِ الدهرِ وقرٌ عن شكايتِنا

    فهلْ يصيح إلى نوحي وَإنشادي

    The age turns a deaf ear to our complaints

    Can it hear my groaning and chanting?

  23. ليهنَ (تموز) من فازوا به فلقدْ

    كان الشقاء لنا فيه بمرصاد

    Tammuz has favored those who won it

    While misfortune for us lay in ambush

  24. قد خصّنا بجواري النحسِ حين جرتْ

    عَلَى سوانا جواريه بإسعاد

    It singled us out for the curses of fate

    When its curses joyfully befell us

  25. وَربما عثرة ترجى إقالتها

    وَخذلة أضمرتْ نصراً لميعاد

    Perhaps a stumbling that we wish to end

    Or abandonment that secretly plots a promised victory
