1. لو رأَيتَ الكأَسَ وَالوجه الصبيحا

    لم تلمْ في الراحِ من يعصي النصيحا

    If you saw the wine cup and the radiant face

    You would not blame the one who disobeys advice

  2. تركتْ في كأْسها لي قُبلةً

    طابتِ الراحُ بها طعماً وَريحا

    She left a kiss for me in her cup

    Its taste and aroma pleased the wind

  3. أَرسلَ الإِبريقُ شؤبوبَ سنا

    فإِذا أَقداحُنا قوسُ قُزَحْ

    The decanter sent intoxicating breaths

    So our cups became rainbows

  4. كشعاعِ الشمسِ لأْلآءً فهلْ

    بعثَ النورَ أَم النارَ قدح

    Like sunbeams on polished goblets

    Did it unleash light or fire in the cup?

  5. صَعَّدَ الزفرةَ حَرّى وَبكى

    حينما أَهوى عَلَى ثغرِ القدح

    It exhaled hot sighs and wept

    When it leaned towards the lip of the cup

  6. كمحبَّيْنِ فَمٌ زقَّ فماً

    علّتِ الأَنفاسُ والمدمعُ سحّْ

    Like two lovers, a mouth met a mouth

    The breaths grew heated and tears flowed

  7. غصَّ بالشهقة لما ارتدَّ عن

    شفةِ الكأْسِ وبالدمعِ المُلِح

    It choked on a sob when it recoiled

    From the lip of the cup, salty with tears

  8. راعفَ المنقارِ خفافَ الحشا

    من رآه خاله طيراً ذبيحا

    It fluttered its soft lips like a wounded bird

    Whoever saw it thought it a slaughtered bird

  9. وهي كالجذوَةِ تنزو قرحاً

    فذرِ الماءَ يَرُضْ منها جَموحا

    It is like embers releasing wounds

    So leave the water to soothe its fervor

  10. رامها ابنُ المزنِ فاستحيتْ فما

    مَسَّها حتى تغشّاها حجابُ

    Ibn al-Muzayyin desired it but it was shy

    It would not let him touch it without a veil between

  11. صافيانِ امتزجا فاستترا

    هكذا الماءُ عَلَى الشمسِ سحابُ

    The two clarities blended and hid together

    Thus water veils the sun like a cloud

  12. هل رأَيتَ النارَ يعلوها دخانٌ

    أَبيضٌ والشمسُ يغشاها ضبابُ

    Have you seen fire with white smoke above

    And the sun veiled by mist?

  13. بسمتْ حتى ثناياها بدتْ

    لا تخلْ أَنَّ الذي يطفو حباب

    It smiled until its dimples appeared

    Do not think that what floats is foam

  14. أَصبحتْ بابنِ السما مثل السما

    كوكبٌ يبدو وَينقضُّ شهاب

    It became like the sky with Ibn al-Sama

    A star appears and a shooting star darts across

  15. عبقتْ في الكأْسِ من أَنفاسها

    نفحةٌ تهدي إِلى الندمان روحا

    From its breaths in the cup there wafted

    A scent that gives life to the despondent spirit

  16. وهي قبل المزجِ تحكي رقةً

    أَدمع (العذراءِ) إِذ تبكي (المسيحا)

    Before mixing, it tells of gentleness

    Like the tears of the Virgin weeping for Christ

  17. قد رفعناها نحيّي بعضَنا

    وَقرعنا بعد ذا كأْساً بكاس

    We lifted it up, toasting each other

    Then we clinked another cup against a cup

  18. وَتعاهدنا علَى (السرِّ) وَما

    أَضيعَ (السرَّ) عَلَى أَنفاسِ حاس

    And swore an oath of secrecy

    No breath would ruin the secret

  19. وَعَلَى اسمِ (الحب) كانت نهلةٌ

    تغمضُ العين وَتغري بالعطاس

    In the name of love it was a draft

    That closes the eyes and excites sneezes

  20. ثمَّ ثنّينا فساغتْ سهلةً

    راضها التقبيلُ من بعدِ شماس

    Then we bent over and it flowed smoothly

    Pleased to be kissed after thirst

  21. أَنبتتْ في كل خدٍ وردة

    ورمتْ في كلِّ عينٍ بالنُعاس

    It sprouted a rose on each cheek

    And cast sleepiness into each eye

  22. وَمن الأَلسنِ حلّتْ عُقدا

    هكذا تجعل من عيٍّ فصيحا

    Knots loosened from the tongues

    Thus it makes an ineloquent man eloquent

  23. أَرهفتْ حساً وَهاجتْ شجنا

    وَبها جوُّ المنى أَمسى فسيحا

    It aroused feeling and awakened passion

    Through it the atmosphere became delightful

  24. أَيقظتْ عاطفةً وَثابةً

    وَرمتْ جفناً وَجسماً بالفتورِ

    It made the world worthless to its drinker

    To him it was not worth a sip

  25. هانتِ الدنيا عَلَى شارِبها

    لا تساوي عنده شروى نقيرِ

    Without the cup, it would be meaningless

    The world spins on the palm of its Tenderer

  26. هي لولا الكَأْسُ لا معنى لها

    دارتِ الدنيا عَلَى كفِّ المدير

    Each time he kissed it, he became enamored

    Deeming it small and great

  27. كلّمَا قبّلها هام بها

    فحساها بصغيرٍ وكبير

    What brings comfort, tranquility and joy through the wind?

    He closed his eyelids, seeing his dreams unfold and inspire

  28. أيّ شيءٍ تبعث الراحُ به

    من أمانٍ وَنعيم وَسرور

    Visions are magical fortunetelling

    So take your cup as a soothsayer and diviner

  29. ضمَّ من أَجفانه مستثبتاً

    إِذ رأَى أَحلامَه تجلى وتوحى

    O infant of the cup, I ransom you as a brother

    Kinship and womb-relations through the suckling of the cup

  30. السماديرُ رؤى سحريةٌ

    فاتخذْ كأْسكَ (شِقَّا) وَ (سطيحا)

    The wine has made us brothers

    With Communion wine and spirit and blood

  31. يا رضيعَ الكأْسِ أَفديك أَخاً

    في رضاعِ الكأْسِ قربى وَرحمْ

    What mother before it

    Gave her sons all this, what mother?

  32. آختِ الخمرةُ فيما بيننا

    بلبانٍ وَبروحٍ وَبدم

    It shoulders from all it suckles

    The infant's troubles even if he is aged

  33. أَيّ أُمٍ بذلتْ من قبلها

    لِبَنيها كل هذا أَيّ أُمْ

    It pampered him until he ended up

    Enjoying coziness on the carpet

  34. حملتْ من كلِ من ترضعُهُ

    عنتَ الطفلِ ولو كان هرم

    Whenever it came to him, the more

    The infant's nature craved it and wished for it

  35. طفَّلتْهُ فانتشى حتى انتهى

    للكرى ينعم بالطيف الملم

    O you made delicate by dreams, have

    You interpreted them correctly through the wind?

  36. كلما هشّتْ إِليه زادَها

    ديدنَ الطفل قطوباً وكلوحا

    And the two sweethearts as passion desired

    Youth and beauty combined in him as love and madness

  37. أَيها الناعمُ بالأَحلام هلْ

    عبّرتها الراح تعبيراً صحيحا

    She is like a peacock in youthful bloom

    He is from his infatuation a beautiful wild deer

  38. وَأَليفينِ كما شاءَ الهوى

    وَالصِبا جُنَّتْ به حباً وَجُنْ

    The full moon blossoms on her forehead

    And the night shadows his temple

  39. هي كالطاوسِ من زهو الصِبا

    وهو من غلوائه مهرٌ أَرِنْ

    She is tempting, excelling in beauty

    Beauty is perfected when artistry suits it

  40. يُزهر البدرُ عَلَى جبهتها

    وَعَلَى وَفرته الليلُ يَجِن

    So you see ornament in her dress

    Its light cascading like pouring rain

  41. فَتنتْ حسناً وَراقتْ زينةً

    يكملُ الحسنُ إِذا واتاهُ فن

    When she moves quickly in her walk

    She overflows like a torrent pouring strongly

  42. فترى الزخرفَ في حلّتها

    نورُهُ ينهلُّ كالغيث الهتِن

    A dress that tempts with what it conceals

    Increasing the beauty of what it reveals

  43. فإِذا ما أَسرعتْ في مشيِها

    عجَّ كالشلاّل ينصبُّ دَلُوحا

    It left a delicate impression from her eyebrows

    As a sword that is finely sharpened passes

  44. حلةٌ أَغرتْ بما قد سترتْ

    حين زادتْ حسنَ ما أَبدتْ وضوحا

    On her eyelids, from their kohl

    Darkness amid which a star blinks

  45. تركتْ من حاجبيها أَثراً

    مرهفاً والسيفُ إِنْ دَقّ مضى

    The redness on their joined lips

    Is a heated kiss that traced the coal

  46. وعَلى أَجفانها منْ كحلِها

    ظلمةٌ من بينها النجمُ أَضا

    On her hands and feet

    Are wounds that bled and tears that flowed

  47. إِنَّما الحمرةُ في مبسِهما

    قبلةٌ حرّى حكتْ جمرَ الغضا

    Have you seen ivory patterned

    Or the red glow of ruby or lit candle?

  48. في يديها وعَلَى أَقدامها

    مهجٌ سالتْ ودمعٌ غُيَّضا

    The birds of her jewelry fluttered in her scruff

    Seeking refuge in her breast, a restful place

  49. أَرأَيتَ العاجَ قَدْ قمَّعهُ

    وهجُ الياقوتِ أَو شمعاً مُضا

    Her mirror leaned over from so long

    Facing the bright flash of her beautiful face

  50. رفَّ طيرُ الحلي في لَبَّتِها

    يبتغي في صدرِها كِناً مريحا

    The wine tilted with their bending

    Who has seen a branch leaning over a branch?

  51. عشيتْ مرْآتُها من طولِ ما

    قابلتْ من وجهها برقاً مُليحا

    Passion is dominant and unruly

    And prohibition is overcome by the blond sorceress

  52. مالتِ الخمرُ بأعطافِهما

    من رأَى غصناً على غصنٍ يميلُ

    Her temple was disturbed when it saw

    His head resting between her breasts

  53. الهوى طاغٍ عنيفٌ والنُّهى

    غاله من سوْرةِ الصهباءِ غولُ

    His intoxicated eyelids could barely lift

    From the heaviness of the drunkenness

  54. شوَّشتْ وَفْرتَه لما رأَتْ

    رأْسَهُ ما بين ثدييها يقيلُ

    O the two intoxicated, tenderly embracing

    Neither aware what the other was saying

  55. فسما بالطرفِ يرنو فإِذا

    طرفُهُ من شدةِ السكرِ كليل

    Their cups were empty, so they clung together

    Then got up, for an instant, to leave

  56. يا لمخموريْنِ مُلتخَّيْنِ لمْ

    يعِ كلٌ منهما ماذا يقول

    Like the scale, neither side tipping

    Unless a side was heavier and tipped

  57. نضبتْ كأْسُهما فاستمسكا

    ثم قاما بعد لأْيٍ ليروحا

    After much sweet talk and whispers

    They reached a room where passion reigned

  58. أَشبها الميزانَ ما مِنْ طرفٍ

    شالَ إِلاّ طرفٌ كان رجيحا

    The ghosts rose from their slumber

    When a light was lit in the lantern

  59. بلغا بعد اللتيّا والتي

    غرفةً فيها الهوى ناهٍ أَمُورُ

    The statues were naked

    And the dolls and flowers, ornament and bouquet

  60. هبّتِ الأَشباحُ مِنْ رقدتها

    حينما أُوقِظَ في المشكاةِ نورُ

    The door closed its mouth behind them

    As they became a secret hidden in the heart

  61. التماثيلُ بها عُريانةٌ

    وَالدُمى وَالزهرُ نظمٌ ونثير

    The diwans had closed their eyelids

    When curtains were lowered over them

  62. أَطبقَ البابُ فماً خلفهما

    فهما كالسرِّ يحويه ضمير

    The chairs stretched out arms

    And chests to receive the loved ones

  63. والكُوى قد أَغمضتْ أَجفانَها

    حينما ضُمّتْ عليهن الستور

    The redness of the light throughout

    Announcing it had an amorous eyelid

  64. والكراسي فاتحاتٌ أَذرعاً

    وَصدوراً للقا الأَحباب فيحا

    And they, in the blaze of yearning

    For the scent of eternity in that bed

  65. واحمرارُ النورِ في كِلَّته

    مؤْذِنٌ أَنَّ له جفناً قريحا

    Whoever sees the blossom in her nakedness

    And the one she desires on a soft ample bed

  66. وَهُما برحَ اشتياقٍ في سعيرِ

    لشميم الخُلدِ في ذاك السريرِ

    The amorous play tossed and fluttered

    And the bed creaked and rattled around them

  67. من رأَى (الزُهرة) في عُرْيتها

    وَالذي تهوى عَلَى مهدٍ وَثير

    The lamp surrendered its eyelid to pleasure

    And fell asleep despite moans and sighs

  68. رفّتِ الكِلَّةُ بِشْراً واحتفى

    بهما المهدُ بخفْقٍ وَصرير

    Each of them wished if they remained

    In this sleep till the Day of Resurrection

  69. أَسلمَ المصباحُ جفناً للكرى

    وَغفا رغمَ شهيقٍ وَزفير

    Two lovers do not care if they embraced

    A bed they descended into or a tomb

  70. وَدَّ كلٌّ منهما لو ظلَّ في

    نومِه هذا إِلى يوم النشور

    So forgive, O God, the errors of passion

    And accept sincere repentance

  71. لا يبالي عاشقانِ اعتنقا

    أَسريراً نزلاه أَمْ ضريحا

  72. فاغفرِ اللهم زلاّتِ الصِبى

    وَتقبَّلْ توبةً منها نصوحا
