1. إِنَّ الذين تجافى عنهم الشرفُ

    الشام تبرأُ من عارِ الذي اقترفوا

    Those who shun honor

    Syria disowns the disgrace they have committed

  2. كادوا لها قبل أن كادوا (المصر) فلا

    تؤاخذوها بذنبٍ منه تنتصف

    They almost ruined it before they ruined Egypt, so

    Don't blame it for a sin it avenges

  3. وَكيف يؤخذ موتورٌ بواترِه

    هذا هو الجوْرُ في الأحكامِ والجَنَفُ

    How can one blame the wounded for the wounds?

    This is injustice in judgments and tyranny

  4. سبّةُ الدهرِ فالأَسلافُ تلعنهم

    وَسوفَ يخزى بما جاؤا به الخلف

    The blame of time, so the ancestors curse them

    And the future will be shamed by what they brought

  5. شبّوا وَشابوا عَلَى بيعِ الضمائرِ بل

    تقاسموا الذلّ موروثاً وَهم نُطف

    They grew up selling consciences, rather

    They shared humiliation inherited while they were embryos

  6. هيهات لم يرتفعْ بالعز مارِنهم

    لكنَّهم بدماءِ الذلِّ قد رعِفوا

    Alas, their dwellings were not raised with glory

    But they were soaked in the blood of humiliation

  7. والله ما وردوا وِردَ الإِباءِ وَهمْ

    من منهلِ الهونِ قبلَ اليومِ قد رشفوا

    By God what they attained was not the heritage of fathers when

    From the spring of dishonor before today they drank

  8. عَدَتْ بهم لحياضِ العارِ بطنتُهمْ

    كالحْرِ تعدو إذا أُدني لها العلف

    Their bellies took them to meadows of shame

    Like donkeys they gallop when fodder is brought near

  9. القاعدون عَلَى الخسفِ المعافِ وَقَدْ

    سارَتْ بسبّهمُ الأسفارُ والصحف

    Those sitting safely while journeys and books

    Spread their insults, and they are

  10. عاثوا فساداً (بمصرٍ) (والشآم) فهمْ

    مقنَّعون بلعْنٍ أينما ثقفوا

    Masked with curses wherever found

    The hour will come when regret

  11. لا بدّ من ساعةٍ فيها سيدركهم

    عَلَى الذي كسبتْ أيديهم أسف

    Will reach them for what their hands earned

    "I seek God's forgiveness; had I made them

  12. "استغفرُ الله؛ لو أعطيتُ خَلقَهمُ"

    لكان يصرفني عن خلقهِم أنَفُ

    My creation would turn me away from them"

    Brothers! And we have a share in good deeds

  13. إخوانَنا! ولنا في الصالحاتِ يدٌ

    لكنّنا لكمُ بالسبْقِ نعترف

    But we admit you preceded us

    Kinship and language refuse

  14. تأْبى الأَواصرُ من قربى وَمن لغةٍ

    إلاّ الوفاقَ فكيفَ اليوم نختلف

    Anything but concord, so how can we differ today?

    Hardships and sorrows bring us together

  15. إنَّ المصائِبَ والأحزانَ تجمعنا

    والسعي والأمل الفينان والهدف

    As do hopes, anxiety, and the goal

    By God, we have not neglected any effort in our cause

  16. واللهِ لم نأل جهداً في قضيَّتنا

    وَإِنما الدهرُ فيها بات يعتسف

    Though time in it persists in tyranny

    There is tightness in the chest, and sadness among the loved ones

  17. في الصدرِ ضيقٌ وَما بين اللهاةِ شجى

    وَفي اللسانِ وَفي تبيانه لفف

    And in the tongue and its expression are twists

    What the injustice of time has destroyed for us

  18. ما حطَّ من قدرِنا ظلمُ الزمانِ لنا

    هلْ عيبتِ الشمسُ أنَّ الشَّمسَ تنكسف

    Did the sun sin when eclipses befell it?

    Despair cannot destroy our hopes

  19. وَليس لليأْسِ أن يذوى لنا أَملاً

    دمُ الشبابِ عليه عارضٌ يكف

    The blood of youth foils it

    In us, even if the slanderers attain their desires

  20. فينا وَإِنْ بلغ الواشون مأربَهم

    من همْ بغيرِ هوى الأوطانِ ما كلفوا

    Those who never burdened themselves with love of country

    It is the habit of youth for tears to flow, and they

  21. مِنْ عادةِ الصبِّ تذرافُ الدموعِ وَهمْ

    دماءَهم بهوى أوطانِهم ذرفوا

    Shed their blood for love of their homelands

    How many a lad was cherished by bliss

  22. كم من فتى كانتِ النعماءُ تألفُه

    في كلِّ حالٍ وَخفض العيش والترف

    In every state, in luxury and comfort

    He met his fate for Damascus, when it

  23. لاقى الألاقي لأجل الشام حيث رَمَتْ

    به عن الأهل مضطراً نوى قذُفُ

    Cast him from family, compelled he intended exile

    The parting was signaled by waving its banner

  24. لفحُ الهواجرِ بالتلويح برقعُه

    وَقد بَكَتْ لنواه الروضةُ الأُنُفُ

    And the meadow wept for his intention

    Neither harm dissuades him from love of Syria

  25. لا الضرّ يثنيه عن حبِ الشآم ولا

    ذل الغريبِ وَلا البأساءِ والشظف

    Nor the humiliation of a foreigner, tribulation, or want

    Wherever he was, Syria was his direction of prayer

  26. وَحيث كان فشطرُ الشام قبلتُه

    إِذْ كان يلفته التهيامُ والشغف

    As yearning and fervor turned him there

    I swear by the blood a sacrifice for us and you

  27. حلفتُ بالدمِ قرباناً لنا وَلكمْ

    وَهل وَراءَ دمٍ جُدْنا به حلف

    And is there beyond blood a pact we swore?

    We will keep our affection sincere to you

  28. إِنّا عَلَى العهد نصفيكم مودَّتَنا

    ما في مودتِنا مَنٌّ وَلا سرف

    In our love there is no rancor or excess

    The sincere emotions of love and affection to you

  29. عواطفُ الحبِّ والودِّ الصريح لكم

    بكل قلبٍ لوادي النيلِ تنعطف

    In every heart turn towards the Nile valley

    We will share adversity with you, for when

  30. لنشركنكمُ بالضرِّ فهو إذا

    أُميط عنكم فعنّا الضر منكشف

    Lifted from you, adversity from us too departs

    As for the first ones, they strewed flowers in your midst

  31. أما الأُولى نثروا الأزهارَ عندكمُ

    فقد هَوَتْ فوقهم من مقتِنا كسف

    While above them from our disposal gloom poured

    We disavow the shame their hands presented

  32. للمجدِ نبرأُ مما قَدَّمَتْ يَدُهمْ

    والشاهدانِ الضميرُ الحيُّ والشرف

    With the living conscience and honor as witnesses
