رمتْ وَلم ترم غيرَ العلم والعملِ

يدُ الزمانِ رماها اللهُ بالشللِ

She threw, but threw naught but knowledge and deed,

The hand of time threw her with paralysis.

محتْ بودقِ الرزايا والفجائع مِنْ

صحفِ الكمالِ سوادَ القلبِ والمقل

She erased with sheets of tragedies and calamities,

From the books of perfection, the darkness of the heart and mind.

لله أيّ مصاب جلَّ إِذْ قصدتْ

فتى إباءِ وَفضلاً نادر المثل

What great affliction, when she sought,

A young man of refusal and rare excellence.

وَأي خطبٍ دهانا يومَ مصرعِهِ

فحسبنا اللهُ في ذا الحادثِ الجلل

And what misfortunes we were afflicted with the day of his death,

God suffices us in this tremendous calamity.

يا مَنْ قصدتُ عليه في الإِخا أَملي

أَصبحتُ بعدك في الدنيا بلا أَمل

O you whom I sought brotherhood from and hoped for,

After you I live in the world without hope.

فكيف حالك من بعدي فإِنيَ قَدْ

أصبحتُ عما سوى ذكراك في شغل

So what is your state after me, as I

Have become busy with naught but your memory?

واهاً لغضِّ شبابٍ بات منعفرا

تحت الترابِ وقدٌّ منك معتدل

Alas for the loss of youth that lies dust-smeared

Under the earth while moderation from you is upheld.

فاذهبْ حميداً حباك اللهُ مغفرةً

منه وَعظَّمَ أجرَ العلمِ والعمل

Go rewarded, may God forgive you,

And magnify the reward of knowledge and deed.
