حيّ الشآمَ وَربعَها
ذات الينابِعِ والنهورِ
O the Levant and its expanse
With its springs and rivers
فالربوةُ الغناءُ ما
أحلى بها سجع الطيورِ
For its hills are melodious
With the birds' rhyming chirps
ذات الوهادِ مع النجادِ
مع المياهِ مع الزهور
With its valleys and plains
Its waters and flowers
أشجارُها كعرائسٍ
متضمِّخات بالعبير
Its trees are like brides
Drenched in fragrance
وَبدوحِها تشدو الحما
ئمُ بالعشيِّ وَبالبكور
At its plains, pigeons coo
At dusk and dawn
والريحُ تنسج مغفراً
فوق الغديرِ المستدير
The wind weaves a pardon
Above the round pond
والماء مثلُ أراقمٍ
ينسابُ من عالي الصخور
The water is like prose
Flowing from atop the rocks
والوُرْقُ في ترجيعها
(داود) يقرأ بالزبور
And the leaves in their humming
Recite the Psalms
بجنوبها ذات الجبا
ل الشمِّ والسهل الكبير
In its south are mountains
And the great plain
(المزّةُ) العلياءُ ذا
ت الظلِّ والدوْحِ النضير
Lofty al-Muzah
With its shade and lush meadow
فإِذا نظرتَ جمالَها
ترتدُّ ذا طرف حسير
When you look at its beauty
You turn back, downcast
ما بين دور باذخا
ت (كالخورنق) (والسدير)
Between its stately homes
Like castles and walls
وجنائن جلّتْ عنِ التش
بيهِ حسناً والنظير
And gardens that surpassed
Resemblance in beauty and peer
قد تهتُ في أرجائها
ما بين وِلدانٍ وَحور
You may wander its quarters
Among lads and maidens
من كلِّ أحوى إن تم
شى كان كالبدر المنير
All who came were like
The shining full moon
وَمليحة إِمّا بدتْ
كالنجمِ في ليل الشعور
And the beautiful one appeared
Like a star in the dark night
هذي تميسُ وَذاك ير
فل بالدَّمقس وَبالحرير
This one allures, and that one
Is clad in brocade and silk
والشِعْرُ من فَرْطِ الجوى
قد جاش منّا في الصدور
Out of intense love
Poetry gushed from us
فنظمتها عصماءَ مث
لَ الدرِّ ينظم في النحور
So I stringed it like pearls
Strung around the neck
زفّتْ إليك كغادةٍ
هيفاءَ آنسة فتور
I send it to you like a love poem
Mellow, intimate, and serene
من شاعرٍ أنا هُوْ عزي
ز النفس مطبوعٍ قدير
From a poet, it is I
With a refined, gifted soul
