1. أَلا من لصبٍ كاد من وجده يقضي

    بكى بعضُه مما يلاقي عَلى بعضِ

    Alas! Who suffers love's agony

    Parts of him weep for other parts

  2. تأوَّبه من حب (لمياء) طائفٌ

    فبات على حالٍ من الخبْلِ لا ترضي

    Love for Lamiya left him distraught

    In a state of confusion, dissatisfied

  3. إذا ذُكرتْ لمياءُ ظلّتْ دموعُه

    وأنفاسُه موكولةً ليدِ الفيض

    When Lamiya was mentioned, his tears flowed

    His breath dependent on her generosity

  4. وأهوى بكفيه لفيه وقلبه

    فأدماهما من شدَّةِ الحرِّ والعضِّ

    He put his palms to his mouth and heart

    Wounding them with intense heat and pressure

  5. حذاراً وبقْياً أنْ أريعَ لكاشحٍ

    فيقضي عَلى قلبِ المتيمِ ما يقضي

    I'm wary of a slanderer who would

    Deal the heart of the lover a fatal blow

  6. أعيذ نحولاً منك إن تهدري دمي

    فإنَّ دمي عبءٌ لدى اللهِ في العرض

    I take refuge from harming you though you chide me

    For my blood is a trust with God, to be honored

  7. تحملتُ في حبَّيك ما لو أقلّه

    تحمَّله طودٌ لآذن بالنقض

    I've endured for love of you what if borne

    By a mountain, it would signal collapse

  8. قريتُ الهوى بالدمعِ حتى نزفته

    فأكرمتُ مثواه بلحميَ والنحض

    I housed passion with tears until it bled out

    Honoring its home with my flesh and pulse

  9. تألّبَ أهلي كي يميتوا صبابتي

    فكانوا قذىً بالعينِ لكنني أُغضي

    My family turned hostile to kill my youth

    But to me they're motes though I am gentle

  10. وأحفظهم كتمان أمرِكِ فانطوتْ

    صدورُهم مما كتمتُ عَلى بغض

    I conceal your affair so their breasts tightened

    From what I hid, over their hatred

  11. فلو أنَّ إنساناً يكاتم نفسَه

    لكنتِ إلى نفسي بحبِّك لا أُفضي

    If a man could hide from his own soul

    I wouldn't divulge my love for you to myself

  12. رمى اللهُ كفي إنْ أشارتْ بشلّها

    وجازى فعمي إمّا تكلّم بالغضِّ

    May God paralyze my hand if it signals

    And blind my eyes if they reveal disdain

  13. وجدتُ الهوى حلواً عَلى كلِّ علةٍ

    وَحكم ذويك الجور لكنه مرضي

    I found love sweet despite every sickness

    Though your people's tyranny is hard to bear

  14. هنيئاً لعينيك المنام فإنني

    وَجدتُ سهادي فيك أهنا من الغمض

    My eyes happily sleep, for in you

    I found my pillow, a respite from sorrow

  15. لئن ساءني أهلوك ترقبُ زَوْرَتي

    لقد سرَّني أنْ مِزتني بالهوى المحض

    If your family disfavored me, I anticipate

    Visiting you, for pure love brought me joy

  16. تعالي نفتهمْ هاربين فإننا

    إذاً لبعيشٍ، ما يُكَدّرُ، ذي خفض

    Come, let's flee them, for then we would have

    A life free of turbulence and worries

  17. كأني بها قد أشعر الوجد قلبَها

    فمالتْ بها هوجاء كالغُصُنِ الغضِّ

    It's as if passion made her heart ache

    And she swooned like a supple branch

  18. وَأسلس لي بعد الجموح قيادُها

    أصرِّفُه ما شئت بالبسط والقبض

    After refusing me, she gentled her reins

    Letting me guide her how I wish
