My tears flow not, though weeping is my wont,
Bring to mine eyes what I may weep therewith the martyrs.
And tears, though they should pour, cannot avail,
Make thou my blood or vitals to supply their stead.
A blameworthy man is he who sheds no tear
Of one whose blood was poured for sake of native land.
On such a day, in such a place as this, on
These boughs, their souls aloft did soar on high.
They rose into the highest heavenly sphere, to gain
What their outpouring for the faith did them allow.
Their voices in the pearly gates of Heaven murmur,
Hear ye them not? Within mine ears they echo:
"The echo of a vast petition thus:
The Arabs and their independence evermore!"
And shall we not defend a right whose path
Was paved by streams of blood not yet gone dry?
The blood we shed to free our nation shall not
By Heaven's writ be shed for vain and futile cause.
Remember ye not? Since time itself began,
No day e'er dawned for you in such calamities.
A day renewed, whose memory grief and pain
And wounds of heart and eyes and liver does impress.
Upon the faces - traces of the gloom inscribed,
Within the hearts - the sparks of misery stoked.
O'er (Damascus) melancholy lies outspread
Its clouds upon the firmament entwined depressed.
Whene'er in (Ghouta's) breeze a breath is drawn,
It moans, as moans the anguished sorely pressed.
As if the branches, when the gale inclines,
Disheveled hair that it let down its tresses streamed.
As if the sprigs and leaves it sends along,
A tear that from their inner depths coursed unrestrained.
The birds lamented sorely (Barada's) lack,
After the spring was spent - from it their streaming eyes.
As if its tumult in each valley's bend,
A wailing mourner suffering harm amassed.
Could you but see them on the timbers placed -
Their bodies there - forbearance you would lose.
The sun strikes faces that like diamonds shone
When flaming bright midst sunbeams they've caught fire.
Their drooping in the silence of their repose
Is like one pondering on a thought immense.
Their downcast eyes are those of noble folk
Who pardon wrong with manners good and upright faith.
With necks erect as if afflicted sore
By drought, to water-spring they've hastened unrestrained.
Their necks inclining heavenward, as if they
Beyond have needs that distance would obtain.
If you would wonder - wonder at Man's want
And tyranny! Since first he was ordained.
God's creation - dealt it blow on blow,
All it had firmly built he wrecked with hands.
Self-murderer - if justice ruled his thoughts
Is like one curing blindness by gouging his eyes!
None can the soul from out the body tear
Save He who joined them spirit and flesh ne'er strained.
Grant the deceased offender - retribution,
Then what is due a killer who transgressed unprovoked?
If of their kind, then killing's justified -
Above the beasts, then none shall e'er be left!
I swear by God - the crucified in nobility,
Outshines the king enthroned on dais dressed.
The timbers clasped him as they were applied,
As ribs embrace heart by destiny caressed.
Night bent o'er him, though clad in black it gloomed,
Like mother guarding child in darkest dress.
The scroll of rule on martyr's breast is now
A medal of pride and glory he's been blessed.
By God - the sable night when they walked out
Witnessing their demise for them no special dread.
Less horrifying to them than our disunion -
Our prolonged discord they do not commend.
It vexes them whenever at (the Cause) we still
Remain divided in our counsels and our creed.
Spreading corruption is each partisan
To hypocrisy, lies and sedition bred.
Every thread of hope in us is severed -
Guide us, Lord, to wisdom in our cause decreed.
I seek forgiveness from God for despair
I feel - none despairs but unbelievers strayed.
The remnant of the sword - how small their aid -
Is better, lasting, after this of greater numbers spread.
God is more merciful than to deny us
Succor - leaving us midst mankind lowly serfs misled!
