    مثل أسى والد على ولد

    Enough sorrow to shatter the liver

    Like the sorrow of a father over his son

  2. كم بطل عاش وهو ذو صيد

    فرده الثكل غير ذي صيد

    How many a hero lived as a hunter

    Only for bereavement to make him bereft

  3. أهون من رزئه عليه أذى

    كفاح جيش أو ملتقى أسد

    More bearable than his misery is harm

    The struggle of an army or a lion's den

  4. سابا لك الله وهو ألطف من

    يأسو جريحا وأنت ذو رشد

    May God spare you, for He is kinder

    Than one who despairs the wounded though prudent

  5. إن قلوبا محيطة بك من

    كرامة شاركتك في الكمد

    Hearts encompass you

    With honor sharing your determination

  6. لهفي على ذلك الحبيب ذوى

    منهصر الغصن لم ينل بيد

    Yearning for that beloved one

    The bending branch gained nothing by hand

  7. مات كنضر الفروع يلزمها

    بعد الردى حسنها إلى أمد

    He died like tender branches

    Their beauty persisting after decay

  8. في جاه أوراقه وبين حلى

    أزهاره من مبشر وندي

    In the glory of his leaves and amidst

    The blossoms of good tidings

  9. في عز ملك الصبا وحاشيه

    من غر آماله بلا عدد

    In the prime of his youth and its companions

    Of countless rosy hopes

  10. في منتهى مجده وصولته

    إذ يقتل السعد لاهيا ويدي

    At the height of his glory and ascent

    When luck is killed heedlessly

  11. ويصدم المكر غير ملتفت

    ويقحم الدهر غير مرتعد

    And cunning ambushed unwarily

    And fate assaulted fearlessly

  12. ويترك اللوم حائرا وجلا

    منعقدا في لسان منتقد

    Leaving blame bewildered and dumbfounded

    On the tongue of a critic

  13. يا راحلا في الغداة عن نعم

    تترى وعن بسطة وعن رغد

    O one who departed in the morn from blessings

    Imagined, and from leisure and luxury

  14. وتاركا رسمه لفاقده

    مصورا بالجراح في الخلد

    And left his example to one deprived

    Depicting with wounds in eternity

  15. لا أنكرت روحك التي أمنت

    ما فارقت من مخاوف الجسد

    Your spirit that believed has not denied

    What it abandoned of the body's fears
