1. مشت الجبال بهم وسال الوادي

    ومضوا مهادا سرن فوق مهادا

    The mountains marched with them, and the valleys flowed,

    And they went as lions walking over lions.

  2. يحدى بهم متطوعين كأنهم

    عيس ولكن الفناء الحادي

    Volunteers challenged them as if they were

    Jesus, but destruction is the ultimate end.

  3. لله يوم قد تقادم عهده

    فيها وظل يروع كل فؤاد

    Oh day when its era has passed!

    It still terrifies every heart.

  4. يوم تجف لذكره أنهارها

    خوفا ويجري قلب كل جماد

    The day when its rivers dry up in remembrance of it

    Out of fear, and the heart of every inanimate runs.

  5. وإذا قرأنا وصفه فكأنه

    بدم زكي خط لا بمداد

    And when we read its description, it is as if

    It was written with the blood of the virtuous, not with ink.

  6. ونكاد نسمع للقتال دويه

    ونرى الفوارس في لقا وطراد

    We almost hear the roar of the fighting

    And see the knights in battle and pursuit.

  7. لبروسيا في أرض يانا عسكر

    مجر شديد البأس وافي الزاد

    The Prussian army in the land of Jena,

    A fierce, well-provisioned troop.

  8. وخيامه في الأفق ماثلة على

    ترتيب سلسلة من الأطواد

    Its tents on the horizon like a chain

    Of towering mountains.

  9. نفرت طلائع خيله منذ الضحى

    تترقب الاعداء بالمرصاد

    The vanguards of its horses marched since dawn

    Lying in ambush for the enemies.

  10. فاتوا كما يجري الأتي مشعبا

    في غير مجرى مائه المعتاد

    They came flowing like a flood

    In an unusual course.

  11. وكأن نابليون في إشرافه

    علم على علم الزعامة باد

    As if Napoleon in his oversight

    Knew the science of leadership was waning.

  12. ألمجد رهن إشارة بيمينه

    والنصر بين يديه كالمنقاد

    Glory was hostage to a wave of his right hand,

    And victory was submissive before him.

  13. والفخر في راياته متمثل

    وطلائع العقبان في ترداد

    Pride was personified in his banners,

    And the vultures gathered.

  14. فتهيأ الألمان لاستقباله

    كالحائط المرصوص من أجساد

    The Germans prepared to receive him

    Like a solid, interlocking wall of bodies.

  15. وعلا هتاف مازجته غماغم

    من سل أسلحة وركض جياد

    The clanging of weapons rang out,

    Mingled with the neighing of charging steeds,

  16. ورنين آلات تكاد تظنها

    متجاوبات العزف بالإيعاد

    A clamor like musical instruments

    Playing at a set time.

  17. حتى إذا كمل العتاد تقاذفوا

    بالنار ذات البرق والإرعاد

    When arms were readied, they exchanged

    Volleys of flaming, thunderous fire.

  18. شهب ضخام آتيات والردى

    بمسيرهن ومثلهن غواد

    Huge, falling stars,

    Destroying as they marched like nomads.

  19. تلقي الرجال على الثرى قتلى كما

    يلقي السنابل منجل الحصاد

    Cutting men down like harvesters

    Mowing stalks of grain.

  20. لله درهم وقد حمي الوغى

    فتهاجموا كتهاجم الاساد

    By God, the frenzy blazed!

    They attacked like lions.

  21. تدعو الجراحة أختها بصدورهم

    والسيف يتلو السيف في الأجياد

    Wounds called to their sister wounds in their chests,

    And sword followed sword in the valiant.

  22. وإذا التقى بطلان لم يتجندلا

    إلا معا من شدة الأحقاد

    When two champions met they did not waver

    Until they perished together from intense hatred.

  23. وإذا جواد خر فارسه دعا

    بصهيله ذا حاجة بجواد

    If a steed fell, its rider called

    To it with a whinny full of need for a steed.

  24. والموت في الجيشين غير مجامل

    يجتاح بالأزواج والأفراد

    Death did not discriminate between

    Pairs or individuals in the two armies.

  25. يطوي الصفوف ويترك الدم إثره

    فكأنه فلك ببحر عباد

    It swept away the ranks leaving blood in its wake,

    As if it were a star in a sea of people.

  26. ما زال يفتك والنفوس زواهق

    وكأت تلك هنيهة الميعاد

    It continued to ravage while souls were ships

    And that seemed like the moment of doom...

  27. حتى تولى الذعر جيش بروسيا

    فتفرقوا بين القفار بداد

    Until panic overtook the Prussian army

    And they scattered into the wilderness.

  28. فسعى الفرنسيون في آثارهم

    بعزائم لا ينثلمن حداد

    The French pursued them

    With resolves as solid as armor.

  29. يستكبر الصعلوك منهم دائسا

    في أضلع الأبطال والقواد

    The lowliest among them trampled

    The chests of heroes and commanders.

  30. واستفتحوا برلين وهي منيعة

    وقضوا بها الأيام كالأعياد

    They conquered resistant Berlin

    And spent days there happily as festivals.

  31. وأقام أصحاب البلاد مآتما

    وكسوا على القتلى ثياب حداد

    The people of the land held funeral gatherings

    And dressed the dead in mourning clothes.

  32. ناحت عرائسهم على أزواجها

    والأمهات بكت على الأولاد

    Their brides wept for their grooms

    And mothers cried for their children.

  33. واشتد حزنهم ولم يك مجديا

    من بعد فقد أحبة وبلاد

    Their sorrow intensified and nothing

    Consoled them after losing loved ones and homelands.

  34. ألحزن يخمد والمذلة جمرة

    لا تنطفي إلا بسيل جساد

    Sorrow subsides but humiliation burns

    Like embers only quenched with blood.

  35. عاد الربيع لهم كسالف عهده

    يزهو على الأغوار والأنجاد

    Spring returned to them like it used to

    Blossoming over plains and hillsides...

  36. يا حسنه بلدا خصيبا طيبا

    لكنه نهب الغريب العادي

    How lovely is an abundant, pleasing land

    That strangers come to raid!

  37. تتبسم الأزهار فيه حيثما

    عبس الحمام بهالك الأجناد

    Flowers smile wherever

    Doves weep for the dead troops.

  38. يا خجلة الأحرار من موتاهم

    يثوون حيث المالكون أعادي

    The shame of the free is to die

    While the tyrants live on as enemies!

  39. فاستعصموا بالصبر ثم تكاتفوا

    وتحرروا من رق الاستعباد

    So they endured patiently then banded together

    And freed themselves from the yoke of slavery.

  40. وتأهبوا للثأر والأحقاد في

    أكبادهم كالبيض في الأغماد

    They prepared for revenge while enmity

    Boiled in their veins like eggs in embryos.

  41. حتى إذا اشتدوا وضاق عدوهم

    ذرعا بهم أصلوه حرب جهاد

    When they gained strength and their enemy

    Was frustrated, they waged holy war.

  42. وبنوا رجاءهم على استعدادهم

    لا خير في أمل بلا استعداد

    They built their hopes on their readiness,

    For hopes without readiness are no good.

  43. هدموا معالمه ورووا ردمها

    بدماه فاختلطا دما برماد

    They destroyed its landmarks and buried them

    With blood, so blood mixed with ashes.

  44. واستفتحوا باريس فاستوفوا بها

    أوتارهم وشفوا صدى الأكباد

    They conquered Paris and there

    Fulfilled their deepest desires.

  45. كل بمسعاه يفوز ومن ينب

    عنه الحوادث لم يفز بمراد

    Everyone succeeds according to their effort.

    He who neglects opportunities will not attain his wishes.
