تَرَكْتَ الدَّارَ حِينَ طَغَى أَذَاهَا
وَأَضْحَى شَرُّهَا شَرّاً عَمِيمَا
You left the homeland when her harm overflowed all bounds,
and her evil became an evil all-pervading.
فَلا المَظْلُومُ يَهْوَى أَنْ يَرَاهَا
وَلا المَأْلُومُ يَهْوَى أَنْ يُقِيمَا
Neither does the oppressed long to see her,
nor does one in pain long to remain.
وَمِثْلُكَ مَنْ تَوَرَّدَهَا عَيُوفاً
وَمِثْلُكَ مَن جَلا عَنْهَا كَرِيمَا
One such as you enters her in aversion,
and one such as you leaves her nobly.
نَأَيْتَ مُخَلِّفاً ذِكْراً جَمِيلاً
وَشِعْراً شَائِقاً يُصْبِي الْحَلِيمَا
You went far away, leaving behind a beautiful memory
and captivating verse that awakens youthful passion even in the self-possessed.
فَأَبْقَيْتَ النَّثِيرَ يَسِيلُ دَمْعاً
عَلَيْكَ أَسىً وَأَبْكَيْتَ النَّظِيمَا
Thus you left prose flowing in tears,
grieving for you, and made poetry weep.
