أَضَاءَ رَجَاءٌ فِي دُجَى الرَّأْيِ كَاذِبٌ
فَأَوْحَى إِلى قَلْبِي السُّرُورَ فَأَنْشَدَا
A false hope shone in the darkness of thought;
it breathed joy into my heart, and my heart broke into song—
كَمَا غُشَّ بِالْمِصْبَاحِ قُمْرِيُّ حُجْرَةٍ
تَوَهَّمهُ ضَوْءَ الصَّباحِ فَغَرَّدَا
just as a chamber’s turtledove, deceived by a lamp,
mistook it for the light of dawn and began to warble.
