I have spoken truly in your reproach, or the hot wind will prove true.

No glory is pretense, nor are its signs mere words,

O my people, it suffices us that we are ridiculed by God

for our own sake and for the sake of those the dispraised have claimed.

Is there sorrow like what we weep over, do we have any grief like our pain?

If there is any rescue for us in our anguish, let our humiliation relieve us and our illness heal us,

Take your pleasure and enjoy what pleases you,

Let no preserves or sanctuaries alarm you,

Or learn for once in life what is valid,

knowledge confirmed by deeds and resolves.

By what ignorance did we become a neglected nation,

and by what understanding did the nations turn away their eyes from us?

Do not deny this blame of mine, my excuse

is a wound in my heart that will not heal.

We it is who gave access to those who lie in wait for us,

a sanctuary whose ravens lodged safely.

Had it not been for our negligence, our dereliction, our complacence,

by God, they would not have overstepped their bounds.

This is the truth. I have sincerely proclaimed good counsel,

and good counsel is nothing other than righteousness and mercy to kin.

In mentioning it I did not wish you to despair,

better than despair is to summon destruction.

Does despair that enfeebles a tribe not render it prone to decay,

in which its noble qualities disintegrate?

What call is there for pride from hands that enjoy plenty,

gentle souls, breasts that do not rage?

When despair takes hold of groups it is a disease,

then comes disintegration followed by unknown decay,

like the shadow of a cloud eating away its brilliance

until the sun's rays and its splendor fade away.

Do not lose heart - God hates chronic desperation - lose heart

today as the righteous are determined, so be resolute!

Today the value of our homelands emanates,

beyond all else, and beneath them lie the less worthy.

Today, if you begrudge your lifespans they are wasted,

and status is poverty, and your palaces, rubble.

I hear in the party of life supporting our nation,

    crushing those who oppressed.

Yes, so that our nation may triumph over the tyrants,

not through prayer, but through your triumph!

So it may survive, and the death surrounding it may die,

where our enemies the brutes drive it back.

If we seek its supremacy, nothing can reduce it,

can it then perish, with breath still left in it?

We are not like the cowards who think

that to survive like slaves means to be safe.

The people live if ransomed, and it hopes for

the money of sons, ritual drink is blood.

However much privilege and favor we grant it,

the pledge of meager gain for great price is inevitable.

Consider the course of history, you will not find

a people brought to ruin, once guided, who then went blind.

Those were brought down by their own recklessness,

for they preferred pleasures and grew divided.

No people grow strong enough to destroy another people,

for if you see a tribe laid low, it is they who perished by their own hands.

O my tribe, sincerely granted to glory,

nearby victory and a happy end are fates.

Our state appealed to its mighty ancestors

that its bond not be severed in our time.

Defend its sanctuary, do not let its noble virtues

be seen by lofty minds too shy to look at them.

My heart burns over a war I witnessed,

when the foxes ran riot as the land lay waste.

Grievous on us, their disaster would have been

had their vaunters been other than them!

O ghost of Uthman, awe still clings to you,

alive in fame - commemorated, etched.

How did you transgress, you guardian of its bounds?

The folly of those flatterers, they feared not nor were silent!

Why, they know well from their neighbor beforehand

and from the Rum champion what they knew!

Had you taken care, o ghost, to scream in their ears

with a roar, they would have bolted and fled!

Or had you possessed a bound, they'd have seen

in that lion what the boons do not praise.

They reckoned your kingdom from its long reign as weak,

they will recognize one whom eld has not made frail!

When resolved, if they rely on his calm, no feebleness in him,

but delusion and fancy in them!

Take the truth of what you pictured to yourselves

from peaks and plateaus where choices are found.

On your isles anywhere, or in your cities,

is there where his predecessor did not tread?

The sons of Uthman are devoted keepers, they've known

Uthman's history, of opening and glory.

The protectors of their ancestors’ throats - would they

allow the string they threaded to be scattered?

You deemed Tripoli easy prey permitted you,

but the worst slayer of the deceiver is his gain!

There your horsemen meet, heavily though equipped,

Arabs, hardy, light in battle, charging masses.

Few, each distinguished in the war band,

dumbfounded by those who stayed behind.

Godward was their zeal, Godward their rage,

under fire, in their ears, deafness.

They are clouds, but lions they,

they are regiments, staunch camels they.

They feed on first growth hills, now lush,

clothing them through bare steeps and stony clefts.

Sometimes in early light they storm high mounds,

the coward cringes, scheming to betray them.

Often they disappear into a valley for the night,

the vulture's wing shields them as they bed down beneath it.

Like an eagle's wing guarding her young - when

they leap up, she startles, flustered by their ardor.

Do you watch for their feats, my clan of fame?

Recall what olden days have let you forget?

In armies, who can ride out ordeals like them,

casual with affliction, lest the crisis worsen?

Troops of jinn - no matter how strained, still sprightly,

while weakness in the foe, not in themselves!

However fiercely war shows its teeth, still gently

its glance takes on their beauty, so fine their taste!

When they attend upon it in the gardens promised them,

horror becomes a feast, horrors its ornaments.

The land leaps dancing, the wind makes music,

    seriousness jokes, and dangers smile.

    Self-reliant, no pretense, no impudence,

    tortured, no complaining, no fatigue.

Sometimes destitute and thirsty, still the downpour

suffices not the noble-hearted, nor fresh showers.

Hunger's disgrace springs from unbelief, though deeds

are born of it amazing raids and daring feats.

That is the Mighty whom they cannot touch,

the Hidden who destroys and swallows down.

Do not abandon it to threaten them now that

without a fight destruction of its might advances.

O God, defer your pardon until water sustains them,

then refresh them with a pool's cool shade!

No condition grimmer than news of their hurt,

their hot blindness raging wild as flames.

But I see in their souls what vengeance schedules,

repaying them, appointments too sharp to sheathe.

Steel, rumble in our ranks and lightning-flash!

Thicken and shake when their violence shakes you!

Wherever one of you requires a witty comrade,

torsos pour forth scarlet blood and crimson ichor!

Or shine on spearheads - lances beyond count -

light, chanting, as they plunge in simultaneous!

Then wherever two of you find giddy spirits,

night spills bodies, their brains knocked awry!

So standards emerge from those ranks for us

an omen lingering there, obscured from sight!

We recognize you as their captain today,

your mighty signs are their slaves.

Did you come to dock us, or come to drive us back

when sorrows roused us and worries stung?

By heaven, had their birds flown over eagles

and their ships ridden the seas by God's decree,

all evidences of doom been given them

down to ghouls, winds, and stones from the sky,

they'll rule no plot of free Tripoli, they'll wrong

none of her widows if they come out on top,

nor gain from their raid but lasting disgrace and shame

holding fast, what sore losers usually feel!

Tell whoever's breast cannot open to pour forth aid

to our state against their crimes,

Do you disdain relieving neighbors whom hunger distends

or disavow war dead if they're pitied?

Or pretend that Egypt, dealing gently with them,

risks thereby dark afflictions that consume?

The bogeyman reveals Egypt in panic -

does this inform about her devotions, you relic?

A trick that terrifies, had its plotter not been left

distracted, deluded in mind and senses!

Supposedly, philosophizing, he kills off days -

maybe this wisdom has killed him instead?

Thank God our ranks do not perish

at some chatterer's prattle, nor navy sinks!

O homeland calling out for our rescue,

Egypt yearns for you, Jerusalem, the Sanctum!

No speech has softened and made us weep

like this speech of yours, so moving, tears streaming!

We felt the full weight our ignorance brought upon us

and the bitter depth of our remorse.

Ordain what penance you will for our sin,

our sincerity and nobility appeal to you.

Our wealth is devoted to you, souls too,

long live he who enjoys your bounty without blame!
