Abd al-Aziz, grief has truly overcome you,

though you are not a man given to despair.

You weep for a cherished brother,

worthy of your love and ardent devotion.

Would that your tears might be lifted away,

and my tears be their ransom.

May the consuming anguish be mine, not yours—

the pain you lament from the burning beneath your ribs.

How easy it would be to sacrifice

    all repose and sleep,

if that departed one, so deeply mourned,

    could be hoped to return.

Alas for separation! It has split a heart

whose constant work was mending fractures.

But it is fate's decree—have we

    anything other than submission?

    Live on, O noble root,

for the finest branch among all branches.

And remain safe for brothers who, in

virtue, stand peerless amid the multitudes,

and for a nation whose standing you have exalted—

its lands distinguished among all lands.
