May you be ransomed, O you whose eminence was genuine,
for across the ages, few have been true to such eminence.
Did the hopes raised by your preeminence in the fields of glory
seek to reach life’s furthest bound before its appointed time?
Whoever was to his homelands what you were—
his loss weighs heavily upon those homelands.
You have widowed a faithful woman who mourns for you;
today she is laden with immense sorrows.
You have orphaned children, their nails still tender,
deprived of the tenderness of a father who cherished them.
The heart falls silent, while tears stream forth from grief;
so here is a salutation borne on pouring tears.
And on a lovely face you see grief’s telltale marks,
before childhood’s appointed acquaintance with sorrows.
Turn your face toward your Lord, for He
is the best guardian for them—and sleep in safety.
