1. عِشْتَ كَالطِّفْلِ أَصَابَ الأَلضما

    مَوْضِعَ اللَّهْوِ وَلَمْ يَدْرِ لِمَا

    You lived like a child who was struck by misfortune

    In the place of play, unaware of why

  2. جِدَّ غِرٍّ فِي كِفَاحِ الدَّهْرِ لا

    نَاهِباً رِوْقاً وَلا مُقْتَسِمَا

    He struggled bitterly in the battle of fate

    Neither usurping pleasure nor dividing it

  3. تَحْسَبُ الدُّنْيَا مَثِيراً جَيداً

    وَتَرَى الدَّهْرَ نَظِيماً مُحْكَمَا

    You thought the world was an excellent stimulant

    And saw fate as well-ordered and solid
