فتن النار إذا ما أذهبت
في أفانين الأذى يأبين حصرا
The passions of fire, when they destroy
In the avenues of harm, refuse confinement
ومن الممتع فوق المشتهى
بدع جاء بها التنويع تترى
And above desire is the pleasurable
With innovations brought by variations seen
هذه قنطرة شاهقة
غار منها جانب في الماء طمرا
This is a lofty bridge
Whose side in the water sank into rubble
ذاك صرح جردت أطلاله
من حلي كن ملء العين سبرا
That is a palace whose ruins
Were stripped of jewelry that filled the eye's probing
تلك من عهد عهيد دوحة
ظل يسقيها سحاب العفو ثرا
That is from an ancient grove
Whose clouds of pardon kept watering it
عقدت أغصانها تاج سنى
وخبت بين مدلاة وكسرى
Its branches knitted a crown of years
And it withered between garlands and Chosroes
ثم حول وجهة الطرف تجد
صورا أسوغ في النفس وأمرى
Then turn your gaze, and you find
Images more wondrous to the soul and sight
نمر من فرط ما حاق به
دار آنا في مدار ثم خرا
A leopard who from excess that befell him
His abode turned and then fell
سال من فكيه دامي زبد
حين مس الأرض نشت منه حرى
Foam of blood dripped from his jaws
When he touched the ground, it ignited from him, heated
فهد غاب كسرت شرته
صار كالهر وما يرهب فأر
A gazelle whose mottles were broken
Became like a cat, no mouse did it frighten
وعل من شدة البرح ارتمى
ببقايا روقه ينطح صخرا
A camel from severe exhaustion fell
With remnants of its leaves butting a boulder
ورل أفلت من جحر فلم
يلف من شيء سوى الرمضاء جحرا
A hedgehog sparked from his thorns
A flame that illuminated colors abundant
قنفذ أوقد من أشواكه
شكة لاحت بها الألوان كثرا
A scorpion whose head’s tongues
And tail hastened writhing and stinging
عقرب شالت زبانى رأسها
والذنابى عجلت خلجا وأبرا
Lightning flashed to the eye but it
Was only serpents, hissing and coiled
شبه برق لاح للطرف ولم
يك إلا أفعوانا مسجهرا
Images whose signs of years are unknown
Or a small serpent slithering stealthily
صور لم يدر آيات سنى
أم خشاش حية تسجر سجرا
And besides that how many views
Reality adorned with illusion it engulfed
وسوى ذلك كم من منظلا
لابس الوهم به الحق فغرا
How many mirages of smoke you imagined
As it pretended upon an elephant massive
كم مهاة من دخان ألفيت
وهي تستعدي على فيل هزبرا
How many crosses enraged lent
A fang wherewith he assaulted and conquered
كم سبنتى حنق أقرضه
ضرم نابا به يسطو وظفرا
How many crows appeared fallen
Like shooting stars hurling swift
كم غراب قد تبدى واقعا
كشهاب وتردى مصمقرا
How many eagles dived and soared
Suddenly snatching the hunter bare
كم عقاب درجت فانضرجت
بغتة تقتنص البازي حرا
How many clouds of shining haze
Resembling a water-skin bursting with drops
كم سحاب من هباء ساطع
أشبه المزنة إيماضا وقطرا
