1. وقف الزمان فما لوعدك موعد

    وعفا المكان فما لعهدك معهد

    Time has stopped, so your promise has no appointment

    Space has pardoned, so your covenant has no covenant

  2. هي طلعة لك في الحياة وغيبة

    كالظل إذ يبدو وإذ يتبدد

    It is an ascension for you in life and an absence

    Like a shadow when it appears and when it disappears

  3. بالأمس كنت وأمس في أفق التقى

    شق الحجاب فكان منك المولد

    Yesterday you were and yesterday on the horizon of the meeting

    The veil was torn so from you was the birth

  4. بالأمس كنت وأنت طفل لاعب

    طيرا يباكر أيكه ويغرد

    Yesterday you were and you were a playing child

    A bird that rises early chirping and singing

  5. بالأمس كنت اليانع الفطن الذي

    يشدو المعارف شدوهن وينشد

    Yesterday you were the fresh, prudent one

    Whose friends sang his praises and recited his poems

  6. بالأمس طلابا لغايات العلى

    يدنو لهمتك المرام الابعد

    Yesterday students of the highest aspirations

    Your ambition brought you near to the farthest goals

  7. بالأمس مفتتح الصحافة حرة

    طابت مراشفها وراق المورد

    Yesterday, opening free press

    Its pillows were sweet and the stream was pleasing

  8. بالأمس ذودا عن الضعفاء لا

    تألو جهادا والحفائظ تجهد

    Yesterday, defending the weak without

    Tiring of struggle though the eyelids droop

  9. بالأمس وحيا خاطبا أو كاتبا

    فالسمع يطرب والنهى تسترشد

    Yesterday, inspired as an orator or writer

    The hearing delights and the advice is well-guided

  10. بالأمس مقداما لقومك حازما

    تبني لهم مغنى على وتوطد

    Yesterday, undaunted for your people, decisive

    To build for them a haven of strength and firmness

  11. بالأمس بذال العوارف والندى

    حتى ترى لك عند كل يد يد

    Yesterday, bestowing kindnesses and dew

    So that beside each hand you see a hand

  12. بالأمس موفور الهناء مباركا

    في عيلة للمجد فيها مقصد

    Yesterday, abundant in bliss, blessed

    In a family aiming for glory as its purpose

  13. يرجو تعددك الورى بعديدها

    وتقر عين الجود أن يتعددوا

    They hope for your numbers to multiply through it

    And the eye of generosity rejoices that they abound

  14. بالأمس كنت وكان ذلك كله

    واليوم.. لا أمس غدوت ولا غد

    Yesterday you were and all that was

    And today .. no yesterday you have become, nor tomorrow

  15. أليوم من شاء الحكيم المفتدى

    فينا ومن شاء الزعيم السيد

    Today, whoever the Wise Redeemer willed among us

    And whoever the great Leader willed

  16. أليوم لا توما ولا كتب ولا

    خطب ولا مدح إليه تردد

    Today, no Thomas or books or

    Speeches or praise to which you return

  17. أليوم لا جدوى ولا مجد ولا

    دار تؤممها العفاة فتسعد

    Today no avail, no glory, no

    Home which the dissolute usurp and delight in

  18. أليوم لا رجل يقال هو الفتى

    وحمى يشار إليه هذا المرفد

    Today, no man called the gallant one

    And no protector referred to as the supplier

  19. أليوم إن جار الزمان فجائر

    ذهب الذي بجنابه يستنجد

    Today, if time is unjust, unjust

    Gone is he whose side it would defend

  20. أليوم إن يدع الصديق صديقه

    صم الندى والبر أعشى أرمد

    Today, if a friend calls his friend

    Deaf is friendship, blind is kindness, bleary-eyed

  21. مات النقي خفاؤه وظهوره

    مات الوفي مغيبه والمشهد

    The honest one died, his hiding and revealing

    The loyal one died, his absence and presence

  22. في غربة كالقفر لم يلمم به

    سكن هناك ولم يعده العود

    In a loneliness like the desert, no one patched him

    A home there, and no return came to him

  23. إفيان أني خنت لائذا

    فتركته تحت المباضع يقصد

    Alas I betrayed the one who took refuge

    So I left him beneath the knives to be slaughtered

  24. وافاك يستشفي بماء نافع

    فاعدته لحماه ميتا يلحد

    And he came to you to be healed with beneficial water

    But I returned him to his shroud a corpse to be buried

  25. لكن جاز الغرب جار غروبه

    ناهيك وهو من المشارق فرقد

    But the unjust West has passed, its sunset passing

    No matter, from the East he arose and slept

  26. فدح المصاب ولا اعتراض فإنه

    حكم القدير وهل لنا فيه يد

    The affliction is wide, and no objection, for it is

    The Decree of the Almighty, and what power have we over it?

  27. يا رب سلمنا وإن فطرت أسى

    منا حشاشات وشقت أكبد

    O Lord, make us safe, and if sorrow

    Has left us anxious and split our livers

  28. صرف قضاءك في العباد فإنهم

    ركب الفناء وأنت أنت السرمد

    Your ordainment for Your servants, for they

    Are riders of mortality while You, You are Eternal

  29. ألشمس طالعة بفضلك تنجلي

    والشمس غاربة لعدلك تسجد

    The sun rises by Your grace, elucidating

    And the sun sets by Your justice, prostrating
