عَظَّم اللهُ فِيكَ أَجْرَ الضَّادِ
وَبَنِيهَا مِنْ حَاضِرٍ أَوْ بَادِي
God magnified in you the reward of integrity,
And its people near and far proclaimed your elegy,
رَاعَ آفَاقَهَا نَعْيكَ حَتَّى
لَكَأَنَّ النَّعيَّ بُوقُ التَّنادِي
Your lament echoed in every horizon
As if it were the bugle call of proclamation.
كُل قطْرٍ فِيهِ فَتىً عَرَبِيٌّ
فِيهِ عَيْنٌ شَكْرَى وَقَلْب صَادِي
In every drop of it an Arab hero lies,
With a tearful eye and a grieving heart that cries,
حَدَثٌ أَلهَبَ الصدُورَ التِياعاً
حَيْث دَوى وَفَتَّ فِي الأَعْضادِ
An event set hearts ablaze in tumult,
Where it echoed and cleaved into chests in result.
مِنْ سَمَاءِ الأهْرَامِ جَلَّلَ قَيْسو
نَ وَأَلقَى السَّوَادَ فَوْقَ السَّوَادِ
From the skies of pyramids his coffin draped,
And cast darkness atop the darkness that laid,
وَعَلَى بَهْجَةِ المَرَابِعِ فِي لُبْ
نَانَ أَرْسَى سَحَابَةً مِنْ حِدَادِ
And on the joy of gardens in Lebanon
It cast a cloud of mourning morose and wan.
لَيْسَ بِدْعاً أَنْ يُمْسِيَ الشَّامُ وَالأَحْ
زَان فِيه تُقِض كل وِسَاد
It’s no wonder that Damascus and the towns
Spend this night with death in place of down,
مَا تُرَاهُ يَقْضِي الصَّديقَ الذي بَا
دَأَ بِالفَضْلِ مِنْ حُقوقِ الوِدَاد
A friend whose goodness was first displayed,
What would his passing make debts unpaid?
كَيْفَ حَالُ الإخْوَانِ فِي مِصْرَ يَا حَا
فِظُ مِنْ وَحْشَةٍ لِهَذَا البِعَاد
O guardian, how fare the brothers in Egypt,
Sheltered from the desolation of this rift?
أَيْنَ زَيْنُ النَّدِيِّ مِنْهُمْ وَهمْ فِي ال
ظَّرْفِ مَا همْ وَأَيْنَ أُنْسُ النَّادِي
Where is the beauty of their company, while in plight,
Where, and where is the joy of the gathering site?
كُلَّ حَفْلٍ شَهِدْتَهُ كُنْتَ فِيه
قِبْلَةَ السَّامِعِينَ وَالأَشْهَادِ
In every assembly you attended, you were
The focal point for listeners and witnesses there,
يَأْخُذُونَ الحَديثُ عَنْكَ كَمَا يَ
شْتَفُّ مَنْ يَرتَوِي مِنَ الورَّاد
Speaking of you they partake like the parched drinking deep,
Stirred words from you they treasure and keep.
فَإِذَا مَا تَنَادَروا وَتَنَادَرْ
تَ فَأَعْجِبْ بِوَرْيِ تِلْكَ الزِّنَاد
When you bantered and jested back and forth,
Marvel at the radiance those trifles brought forth,
فطَنٌ تَشْرَحُ الصُّدورَ وَمَا تُؤْ
ذِي دعَابَاتُهَا سِوَى الأَنْكَاد
Wit that makes hearts expand, harmless in its cradle,
Save to ignite smiles from those inclined to straddle.
ربَّما كَانَتِ العِظَات الغَوَالِي
فِي شَظَايَا ابْتِسَامِهَا الوَقَّاد
Perhaps profound lessons hid within the shards
Of his kindling smile and piercing regards,
كَيْفَ حَالِي وَأَنْتَ أَدْرَى بِمَا خَلَّ
فْتَ لِي مِنْ فَجِيعَةٍ وَسهَاد
How fare I, when you know well the dearth,
Of joy, and the flood of sorrow since your earthly berth?
أَسْعِدي يَا هَوَاتِفَ الأَيْكِ شَجوي
أَنا فِي حَاجَةٍ إِلَى الإِسْعَاد
Gladden me, oh sweet telephone with happiness I implore!
I am in need of some cheer and glee in my core,
أَبْتغِي البَثَّ وَالشَّجا غضَّ مِنْ صَوْ
تِي وَحَرُّ الأَسَى أَجَفَّ مِدَادِي
I seek to unburden my voice and heartache in this ode,
Though the pain of loss has dried my pen loaded.
وَيْحَ أُمِّ اللُّغاتِ مِمَّا دَهَاهَا
فِي طرِيفِ الفخارِ بَعْدَ التِّلاَد
Oh mother of languages, what shame she saw,
In the tatters of pottery after her golden era thaw!
ذاقتِ الثُّكلَ فِي بنُوَّتِهَا الأمْ
جَادِ بَعْدَ الأُبوَّةِ الأمْجَادِ
She tasted bereavement in her esteemed sons so fair,
After fatherhood glory beyond all compare.
فِي رِفاقٍ رَدُّوا عَلَى كل أَصْلٍ
مِن عُلاهَا نضارَة الأعْوَادِ
In company they restored each pillar anew,
With saplings of fresh life in lieu of rotting hews,
نضرَ الله عَهْدَهمْ وَسَقاهمْ
مَا سَقى الأوّلِينَ صَوْبُ العِهَادِ
May God sustain their era with all primal boons drawn,
That quenched those first generations at dawn.
نخبَةٌ قلَّمَا أَتِيحَ لِعَصْرٍ
مِثل مَجْمُوعِهِمْ مِنَ الأفْرَادِ
An elite, rarely allowed for any age,
Their peerless assembly of individuals and sages,
أَيْقَظُوهَا مِنَ الرُّقَاد وَقَدْ جَا
زَ مَدَاهُ أَقْصَى مَدى لِلرُّقَادِ
They awakened her from the deepest swoon,
After the long deadening mires of gloom.
وَأَعَادُوا جَمَالَهَا فِي زُهَاهُ
يَتَرَاءَى قَديمُهُ فِي المُعَادِ
And restored her former glory to view,
Where old radiance shone in the new,
أَيْنَ سَامِي وَأَيْنَ صَبْرِي وَحِفْنِي
وَرِفَاقٌ جَاوَرْهُمُ فِي الهَوَادِي
Where are Sami, my patience, and composure?
And their company in the valleys secure?
لَحِقَ اليَوْمَ حَافِظٌ بِالمُجَلِّي
ينَ وَمَا كَانَ آخِراً فِي الطِّرَاد
Today Hafiz joined the exalted departed throng,
Though he was not last, trailing the trail along,
شَاعِرٌ لَمْ يُبَارِهِ أَحَدٌ فِي ال
أَخْذِ بِالمُسْتَحَبِّ وَالمُسْتَجَادِ
A poet without match in upholding the desired,
His compositions in necklaces were uniquely attired.
يُحْكِمُ الصَّوْغَ فِي القِلاَدِ فَمَا يَأْ
تِي صَنَاعٌ بِمِثْلِهَا فِي القِلاَدِ
A diffuser whose skill overflowed like wine’s fervor,
Save adorning speech with gems, none could be diviner,
نَاثِرٌ تَنْفُثُ البَرَاعَةُ مِنْهُ
نَشْوَةَ الخَمْرِ فِي مُجَاجِ شِهَادِ
In rhetoric innovations none could pace,
His structures and vocabulary none could replace.
لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي مَصَايِدِ اللُّؤلُؤ الفَا
خِرِ يُبْقِي فَرِيدَةً لاَصْطِيَادِ
In his phrases and individual words, eloquence was defeated,
By the splendor in them, critics were refuted,
فِي تَرَاكِيبِهِ وَفِي مُفْرَدَاتِ اللَّ
فْظِ حَارَتْ نَفَاسَةُ الحُسَّادِ
Meanings wandered astray between meanings,
In his sagacious counsel and steadfastness gleaning.
كَانَ فِي سَمْعِهِ رَقِيبٌ عَلَيْهِ
يَقِظٌ مِنْ جَهَابِذِ النُّقادِ
And structures stood sturdy between structures wise,
With firm foundations and pillars stabilizing ties,
يَقَعُ الزَّيْنُ مِنْهُ فِي مَوْقِعِ الزَّيْ
نِ وَيَنْبُو بِالشَّينِ نَبْوَ سَدَادِ
But describe the literary man and say what you deem,
Of the virtuous, faithful, and generous friend.
فَالمَعَانِي تَتِيهُ بَيْنَ المَعَانِي
بِسَنِيِّ الحُلِيِّ وَالابْرَادِ
Who consoles virtue, when the noblest scions,
And their righteous children are but few lions?
وَالمَبَانِي تَعِزُّ بَيْنَ المَبَانِي
بِمَتِينِ الأسْبَابِ وَالأوْتَادِ
A disposition no fainthearted can shoulder,
But the stalwart of resolute boulder.
عَدِّ عَنْ وَصْفِكَ الأدِيبَ وَقُلْ مَا
شِئْتَ فِي الفَاضِلِ الوَفِيِّ الجَوَادِ
He never compromised it to live at ease,
Nor ever feared to displease.
منْ يُعَزي عَنْهُ المُرُوءَةَ أَمْسَتْ
وَبَنُوهَا الأبْرَارُ غَيْرُ عِدَادِ
Who consoles candor, whose falsity was seen,
As loss, while profit lied in disguise and screen?
شِيمَةٌ لاَ يُطِيقُ كُلْفَتَهَا غَيْ
رُ أُولِي العَزْمِ وَالحُمَاةِ الجِعَادِ
Dissemblance could not contain his sincere heart,
That equity prevail in dealings, from start.
مَنْ يُعَزِّي عَنْهُ الوَفَاءَ وَقَدْكَا
نَ يَرَى نَقْضَهُ مِنَ الإِلحَادِ
Open views, not cowardice veiled aright,
Are swords unsheathed, not hidden in their sheath for might.
خُلُقٌ لَيْسَ فِي الضِّعافِ وَمَا يَحْ
مِلُ أَعْبَاءَهُ سِوَى الاجْلاَدِ
Who consoles his knowledge seeking, if not for aid
From his generous hands that seekers assayed?
لَمْ يُسَاوِمْ بِهِ فَيَنْعَمَ بَالاً
لاَ وَلَمْ يَرْعَ فِيهِ جَانِبَ آدِي
With initiatives exploring every hue,
None surpassed them in enriching the pursuit.
مَنْ يُعَزِّي عَنْهُ الصَّرَاحَةَ كَانَ ال
غُرْمُ فِيهَا وَالغُنْمُ فِي الإِهْمَادِ
He composed poetry in youth with talent imbued,
A natural, innate, and able student,
لَمْ يَسَعْهُ وَفِي الضَّميرِ خِلاَف
أَنْ يَرَى الاِعْتِدَالَ فِي المُنَآدِ
Whose early art contained exemplary features,
Innovations beyond customary creatures.
مَا فُتُوحُ الآرَاءِ وَالجُبْنُ يَطْوِ
يهَا كَطَيِّ النِّصالِ فِي الأغْمَادِ
Whatever his nature effortlessly achieved,
He willingly refined with diligence believed,
مَنْ يُعَزِّي القُصَّادَ عِلْماً تَوَخَّوْا
أَوْ نَوَالاً عَنْ مُسْعِف القُصَّادِ
Except verse did not provide sufficient fare,
In the turmoil of living by its thin air.
ذِي الأيَادِي مِنْ كُلِّ لَوْنٍ وَأَغْلاَ
هُنَّ فِي الْمَأْثُرَاتِ بِيضُ الأيَادِي
Providing became imperative, so Hafiz trekked,
Across the barrens and wilds insipid and bleak,
مَنْ يُعَزِّي كِنَانَةَ اللهِ عَنْ رَا
مِي عِدَاهَا بِسَهْمِهِ المِصْرَادِ
Lonely in the savage cliffs and Sudan,
Between ravines and wastelands forbidden.
عَنْ فَتَاهَا الشَّاكِي السِّلاَحَيْنِ وَالمَا
ضِيهِمَا فِي شَوَاكِلِ الأضْدَادِ
His days passed in bleakness, bereft of grit steadfast,
And nights in tents, crumbling in aged collapse,
إِنَّما حَافِظٌ فَتَاهَا وَمِنْهَا
وَبِهَا فَخْرُهُ عَلَى الأنْدَادِ
In his soul’s core, concerns churned deep,
Like waves, listless and wide sweeping.
نَشَّأتْهُ وَأَيَّدَتْهُ بِرُوحٍ
عَبْقَرِيٍّ مِنْ رُوْحِهَا مُسْتَفَادِ
What army do they train for Egypt? While in this,
Her leader remotely resides in remiss,
بَعْدَ أَنْ كَانَ حَاكِياً وَهْوَ يَشْدُو
جَعَلَتْهُ المَحْكِي بَيْنَ الشَّوَادي
And why does the sky heap threats looming?
A number made of steel, booming.
نَظمَ الشِّعرَ فِي الصِّبا نَظْمَ وَاعٍ
لَقِنٍ نَاشِيءٍ عَلَى اسْتِعْدَادِ
That preoccupied him for a time, diverting his care,
From brooding beyond, into worldly affair,
بَادِيءٍ صَوْغَهُ وَفِيهِ فنونٌ
بَارِعَاتٌ لاَ يَتَّسقْنَ لِبَادِي
Except sprinkling visions that came to thought,
Of his accustomed imagination, fraught.
مَا تَعَاصَى عَلَيْه عَنْ عَفْوِ طَبْعٍ
رُدَّ طَوْعاً لهُ بِفَضْلِ اجْتِهَادِ
Providence moves the tides of communities life,
In surges, breaking ridges of calm and strife,
غَيْرَ أَنَّ القَرِيضَ لَمْ يَكُ فِي مُضْ
طَرَبِ العَيْشِ مُغْنِياً مِنْ زَادِ
Dissent within the military and causes complex
Are tribulations not given to steadfast.
أَوْجَبَ الرِّزْقُ فَانْتَأْى حَافِظٌ يَكْ
دَحُ فِي بِيْئَةٍ مِنَ الأجْنَادِ
Arrogance emboldened the submitting turncoats,
Against their principled liberators of lofty votes,
مُوحَشاً فِي مَجَاهِلِ النُّوبِ وَالسُّو
دَانِ بَيْنَ الأغْوَارِ وَالانْجَادِ
So their treason met consequences deserved,
When the wicked reaped the fate they swerved.
تَتَقَضَّى أَيَّامُهُ فِي ارْتِيَاضٍ
وَعَلَى أُهْبَةٍ لِغَيْرِ جِلاَدِ
Dragging them as examples, though presumed benign,
Yet realized as wicked, sealed in their end design,
وَلَيَالِيهِ فِي الخِيَامِ لَيَالِي
وَسِنٍ رَازِحٍ مِنَ الإِجْهَادِ
Rumors of this spread among the people and shook,
Planting distress deep, beyond pallor’s look.
فِي الصَّميمِ الصَّمِيمِ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ الحُرَّ
ةِ هَمٌّ مُرَاوِحٌ وَمُغَادِي
As if whips tore their flesh and ropes their hides,
News pierced deeper than the blades of knives.
أَيُّ جَيشٍ يُدَرِّبُونَ لِمِصْرٍ
وَوَلِيُّ التَّدْرِيبِ فِيهِ العَادِي
Hafiz's elegy resounded like a pledge made,
Echoing like a lion in the valley shade.
وَلِمَنْ تَمْلأُ الفَضَاءَ وَعِيداً
عُدَدٌ مِنْ حَدِيدِهِ الرَّعَّاد
In verses that, if granted speech, would speak
ذَاكَ مَا ظَلَّ فِيهِ حِيناً وَحَسْبُ ال
نَّفسِ شُغْلاً بِهِ عَنِ الإِغْرَادِ
Of the bitter bile envy stores in its peak,
It taught the submissive the lesson of might,
غَيْرَ بَثٍّ يَبُثُّه إِنْ أَتَاهُ
طَائِفٌ مِنْ خَيَالِهِ المُعْتَادِ
Where the prey, and the predator’s appetite.
The patient were promised triumph, a truth realized,
لِلمَقَادِيرِ فِي شُؤونِ الجَمَاعَا
تِ تَصَارِيفُ رَائِحَاتٌ غَوَادِي
By their chronicle, steadily materialized,
Patience in souls is an embryo, that strains
فِتَنُ الجَيْشِ وَالبَوَاعثُ كُثْرٌ
فِتْنَةٌ لَمْ تَكُنْ بِذَاتِ امْتِدَادِ
The bearers, before delivering its gains.
How can spontaneity produce this, when no thought,
فَاسْتَطَارَ السُّوَّاسُ وَاضْطَرَبَتْ أَحْ
لاَمُ زُرْقِ العُيُونِ فِي القُوَّادِ
Was ever extemporized with wisdom fraught?
Fortitude was difficult for groups to employ,
رَابَهُمْ حَافِظٌ فَعُوقِبَ فِي جُمَ
لَة مَنْ عَاقَبُوهُ بالإِبْعَاد
And in individuals, it lived coy.
The masses often betrayed in struggle past,
آخَذُوهُ بِالظَّن مِنْ غَيْرِ تَحْقِ
يقٍ وَمَا آخَذُوا عَلَى إِفْنَاد
Ceding to tyranny its reign to last,
But faith was the ally of vanguards’ hearts,
فَتَوَلَّى وَمَا لِمُؤْتَنَفِ العَيْ
شِ بِعَيْنَيْه مِنْ ضِيَاءٍ هَادي
Its reliance emboldened their willful parts.
They drew strength, and beyond strength cared less,
والجَديدَانِ يَضْرِبَانِ عَلَيْه
كُلَّ رَحْبٍ فِي مِصْرَ بِالاسْدَادِ
If spent, never fathoming recession or duress,
While the noblest leader, purest of soul,
مُوغَراً صَدْرُهُ لِمَا سِيمَ فِي غَيْ
رِ جُنَاحٍ مِنْ جَفْوَةٍ وَاضْطِهَادِ
Prized others above self in the trying toll.
Can a people be saved from despair without sign,
عَاطِلَ الثَّوْبِ مِنْ كَوَاكِبِه الزُّهْ
رِ وَمِنْ سَيْفِهِ الطَّوِيلِ النِّجادِ
Of the extraordinary, customary confine?
Mustafa, Mustafa, you sufficed, that your name evoke,
فَهْوَ فِي مِصْرَ وَالبِجَادُ مِنَ الرِّقَّ
ة فِي الحَالِ غَيْرُ ذَاكَ البِجَادِ
Redemption, if you were the first martyr and broke
Mustafa, Mustafa, be congratulated that you revived,
لَقِيَ البُؤْسَ وَالأدِيبُ مِنَ البُؤْ
سِ قَديماً فِيهَا عَلَى مِيعَادِ
A people with that self-sacrifice contrived,
In them a new spirit arose, with enduring life beyond,
حَائِراً فِي مَذَاهِبِ الكَسْبِ لاَ يَفْ
رُقُ بَيْنَ الإِصْدَارِ وَالإِيرادِ
Outlasting events, steadfast and strong.
The day you were mourned nearly revealed a trace,
عَائِفاً خُطَّة الجُدَاةِ وَفِيهِ
طَبْعُ حُرٍّ يَجُودُ لا طَبْعُ جَادي
Of the reverence, on that predestined place,
They gained from unity, strength their foes to defy,
وَلَقَدْ زَادَهُ شَجىً أَنَّ سُوقَ ال
عِلمِ كَانَتْ فِيْ مِصْرَ سُوقَ كَسَادِ
Seeing their valor as shields that fortify.
This is Egypt of the youth, arising in throngs,
وَسَجَايَا الرِّجَالِ رَانَتْ عَلَيْهَا
لُوثَةٌ مِنْ قَديمِ الاِسْتِعْبَادِ
Young at heart, unbowed in lifelong.
A man died leaving a generation bound,
فَهُمُ وَادِعُونَ لاَهُونَ بِالزِّي
نَاتِ وَالتُّرَهَاتِ وَالأعْيَادِ
To valiance, unspoiled by qualms around.
If duty called them, they came like lions denned,
عِبَرٌ مَرَّ فِي جَوَانِحِه مَا
لاَحَ مِنْهَا مَرَّ النِّصالِ الحِدَادِ
Hastening from villages and every fenced ground,
They established an era, quietly brave,
فَتَغَنَّى أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ بَلْ نَا
حَ نُوَاحاً يُذيبُ قَلبَ الجَمَادِ
After dormancy and turmoil, passions they gave.
An era of light from Hafiz, and fire controlled,
بَاكِياً شَجْوَهُ تَرِنُّ قَوَافِي
هِ رَنِينَ النِّبالِ فِي الأكْبَادِ
After prolonged slumber and tamping of flame told,
Poetry took in it a stairway seeking height,
ذَاكَ وَالقَوْلُ لَيْسَ يَعْدُو شَكاةً
لَوْ جَرَتْ أَدْمُعاً جَرَتْ بِجِسَادِ
Raising him beyond peers in station and might.
Who saw the celebrated poet one day,
وَعِتَاباً لَوْلاَ البَرَاءَةُ مِنْهُ
عَاجِلاً كَانَ سُبَّة الآبادِ
With throngs surrounding where he had his say,
Fulfilling from his podium, gazing far,
بَرِئَتْ مِصْرُ مِنْهُ بِالحَقِّ لَمَّا
نَشِطَتْ مِنْ جُمُودِهَا المُتَمَادِي
Eyes kindling, shining like a steady star.
Broad shouldered, legs set apart, striding fast,
طَرَأَتْ حَالَةٌ تَيَقَّظ فِيهَا
لِدُعَاةِ الهُدَى ضَمِيرُ السَّوَادِ
Smiling or frowning, features veiling past,
Chanting the throng, his visage above, guiding,
فَإِذَا حَافِظٌ وَقَدْ بَشَّ مَا فِي
نَفْسِهِ مِنْ تَجَهمٍ وَارْبِدَادِ
As melodious songster or dove a-gliding.
No coyness to him but fleeting dimple dents,
وَبَدَا لِلمُنَى الجَلاَئِلِ فِيهَا
أُفُقٌ وَاسِعُ المَدَى لاِرْتِيَادِ
Sparking lightly his cheeks as he relents,
Captivating all hearts with subtle gestures ample,
مَا تَجَلَّى نُبُوغُهُ كَتَجَلِّي
هِ وَقَدْ هَبَّ مُصْطَفَى لِلجِهَادِ
And excellent voice, reciting as he's able.
And verses no eyelid blinked throughout its stream,
يَوْمَ نَادَى الفَتَى العَظِيمُ فَلَبَّى
مَنْ نَبَا قَبْلَهُ بِصَوْتِ المُنَادِي
Issuing from fervor and creed its theme,
Who saw Hafiz warning, giving tidings clear,
وَوَرَى ذَلِكَ الشُّعورُ الَّذي كَا
نَ كَمِيناً كَالنَّارِ تَحْتَ الرَّمَادِ
Charging, withdrawing, no fatigue adhered,
Trilling with vitality, pausing for none,
فَتَأَتَّى بَعْدَ القُنُوطِ الدَّجُوجِ
يِّ رَجَاءٌ لِلشَّاعِرِ المِجْوَادِ
Then screeching with harsh cacophony, undone,
He shouts the aloof cry, only echoes return,
مَسَّ مِنْهُ السَّوَادَ فَانْبَجَسَتْ نَا
رٌ وَنُورٌ مِنْ طَيِّ ذَاكَ السَّوَادِ
As if the ether carries lightning to shake and burn,
A pride for the worthy that nothing deters,
أَكْبَرَ الدَّهْرُ وَثْبَةً وَثَبَتْهَا
مِصْرُ مُفْتَكَّة مِنَ الأصْفَادِ
And humiliation for the craven that nothing spurs,
A banner's flap, marching to glory ahead,
وَثُغَاءً غَدَا هَزِيماً فَأْلْقَى
رُعْبَهُ فِي مَرابِضِ الاسَادِ
To the heroes' rhythm, onwards lead.
For the spirit reverberating in these odes,
مَا الَّذي أَخْرَجَ الشَّجاعَةَ مِنْ حَيْ
ثُ طَوَتْهَا قُرُونُ الاِسْتِبْدَادِ
Is the spirit of a people, and the voice their abodes,
O one who enriched the age with relics plenteous!
وَجَلاَ غُرَّةَ الصَّلاَحِ فَلاَحَتْ
تَزْدَهِي مِنْ غَيَاهِبِ الإِفسَادِ
My verses failed before the task so grievous,
Though eloquent, they fall short in accolades listed,
فَإِذَا أُمَّة أَبِيَّة ضَيْمٍ
مَا لَهَا غَيْرُ حَقِّها مِنْ عَتَادِ
For one whose remembrance immortality twisted,
It suffices you are mentioned, your memory indeed,
نَهَضَتْ فَجأْةً تُنَافِحُ فِي آ
نٍ عَدُوَّيْنِ أَسْرَفَا فِي اللِّدَادِ
Is worthiest of all to eternity cede.
أَجْنَبِياً أَلْقَى المَرَاسِيَ حَتَّى
تُقْلِعَ الرَّاسِيَاتُ فِي الاطْوَادِ
وَهَوَاناً كَأنَّما طَبَعَ الشَّعْ
بَ عَلَيْه تَقَادُمُ الإِخْلاَدِ
حَلْبَةٌ يُعذَرُ المُقَصِّرُ فِيهَا
وَالخَوَاتِيمُ رَهْنُ تِلْكَ المَبَادِي
لَيْسَ تَغْيِيرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ يَسِيراً
كَيْفَ مَا عُوِّدُوهُ مِنْ آمَاد
غَيْرَ أَنَّ الإِيمَانَ كَانَ حَلِيفاً
لِقُلُوبِ الطَّليعَة الانْجَاد
فَاسْتَعَانُوا بِه عَلَى مَا ابْتَغُوْهُ
غَيْرَ بَاغِينَ مِنْ بَعِيدِ المُرَاد
لَمْ يَطُلْ عَهْدُ مِصْرَ بِالوَثْبَة الأُو
لَى وَدُونَ الوُصُولِ خَرْطُ القَتَاد
فَتَرَاخَى فِيهَا وَثِيقُ الاوَاخِي
وَوَهَى الْجَزْلُ مِنْ عُرَى الاِتِّحاد
آيَةٌ أَخْفَقَتْ فَقَيَّض أُخْرَى
أَثَرٌ مِنْ عِنَايَة الله بَاد
فَزِعَتْ دِنْشِوَايُ تَحْمِي حَمَاماً
مِنْ مُلِمِّينَ كَالذِّئَابِ الأَوَادِي
فَتَصَدَّى لِلذَّوْدِ عَنْهُ جُفَاةٌ
مِنْ شُيُوخٍ بِهَا وَمِنْ أَوْلاَدِ
حَادِثٌ رَوَّعَ العَمِيدَ أَيَخْشَا
هُ وَسُلْطَانُهُ وَطِيدُ العِمَادِ
لاَ وَلَكِنَّ عِزَّةً أَخَذَتْهُ
عَنْ غُرُورٍ بِبَأْسِهِ وَاعْتِدَادِ
سَفَهٌ جَرَّأَ العَبِيدَ المَنَاكِي
دَ عَلَى مُعْتَقِيهِمِ الأَجْوَادِ
فَخَلِيقٌ بِهِمْ أَشَد قِصَاصٍ
حَلَّ بِالآبِقِينَ وَالمُرَّادِ
سَاقَهَا مُثْلَةً تَوَهَّمهَا خَيْر
اً وَكَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ شَرَّ نَآدِ
ذَاعَ فِي الشَّعبِ وَصْفُهَا فَفَشَتْ آ
لاَمُهَا فِي القُلوبِ وَالأَجْسَادِ
وَكَأَنَّ السِّياطَ يَحْزُزْنَ فِي أَجْ
لاَدِهِ وَالحِبَالَ فِي الأَجْيَادِ
كَانَ تَرْجِيعُ حَافِظٍ نَوْحَ مَوْتو
رٍ فَدَوى كَاللَّيْثِ بالإِيعَادِ
فِي قَوَافٍ بِهِنَّ تَنْطِقُ لَوْ أُوْ
تِيَتِ النطْقَ أَلسُنُ الأَحْقَادِ
عَلَّمَتْ خَافِضِي الجَنَاحِ لِبَاغٍ
كيْفَ شَأْنُ الحَمَامِ وَالصَّيادِ
وُعِدَ الصَّابِرُونَ بِالفَوْزِ وَعْداً
حَقَّقتْهُ أَنْبَاؤُهُمْ بِاطرَادِ
إِنَّما الصَّبرُ فِي النفُوسِ جَنِين
يُرْهِقُ الحَامِلاَتِ قَبْلَ الوِلاَدِ
كَيْفَ يَأْتِي بِهِ ارْتِجَالٌ وَلَمْ يَأْ
تِ ارْتِجَالٌ يَوْماً بِقَوْلٍ مُجَادِ
خلق عَزَّ فِي الجَمَاعَاتِ مِنْ فَرْ
طِ تَكَالِيفِهِ وَفِي الآحَادِ
طَالَمَا خَانَ فِي النِّضالِ الجَمَاهِ
ييرَ فَأَلقَتْ لِغَاصِبٍ بِالقِيَادِ
بَعْدَ وَثْبٍ فِي إِثْرِ وَثْبٍ عَنِيفٍ
وَارْتِدَادٍ فِي الشَّوْطِ غِب ارْتِدَادِ
سَاوَرَ الأُمَّة التَّرَددَ وَالْتَا
ثَ عَلَيْهَا فِي السَّيرِ وَجْهُ الرَّشَادِ
وَتَبَدَّى الإِحْجَامُ فِي صُورَةٍ زَلاَّ
ءَ جَرَّتْ إِقْدَامَ أَهْلِ الفَسَادِ
بالدِّعَايَاتِ وَالسِّعايَاتِ حَاموا
حَوْلَهَا لِلسِّوَامِ أَوْ لِلرِّوَادِ
لاَ تَسَلْ يَوْمَذَاك عَنْ جَلدِ القا
دَةِ فِي مُلْتقى الخطوبِ الشِّدَادِ
كلَّمَا ازْدَادَتِ الصِّعابُ أَبَوْا إِلاَّ
كِفاحاً وَعَزْمُهُمْ فِي ازْدِيَادِ
يَبْذلونَ القُوى وَفَوْقَ القوَى غَيْ
رَ مُبَالينَ أَنَّها لِنَفَادِ
وَالزعِيمُ الأَبَر أَطْيَبُهُمْ نَفْس
اً عَنِ النَّفسِ فِي صِرَاعِ العَوَادِي
هَلْ يُنَجِّي شعْباً مِنَ اليَاس إِلاَّ
حَدَث مِنْ خَوَارِقِ المُعْتادِ
مُصْطَفَى مُصْطفَى بِحَسْبِكَ إِنْ يُذْ
كَرْ فِدَاءٌ أَنْ كنْتَ أَول فَادِ
مُصْطَفَى مُصْطَفَى لِيَهْنِئْكَ أَنْ أَح
يَيْتَ قَوْماً بِذَاكَ الاِسْتِشْهَادِ
دَب فِيْهِمْ رُوح جَدِيدٌ لَهُ مَا
بَعْدَهُ فِي القلوبِ وَالإِخلادِ
تنقضِي الحَادِثَات بعْدَك وَالرو
حُ مُقِيم فِيهِمْ عَلَى الابَادِ
كَادَ يَوْم شيعْتَ فِيهِ يُرِيهِمْ
لَمحَةً مِنْ جَلاَلِ يَوْمِ المَعَادِ
صَدَرُوا عَنْهُ بِالتَّعارُفِ فِيمَا
بَيْنَهُمْ وَهْوَ قوَّةُ الأَعْدَادِ
وَاسْتَشَفوا لِبَأْسِهِمْ فِيهِ سِرا
كَمْ تَحَامَى أَنْ يُدْرِكوهُ الأعَادِي
هَذِهِ مِصْرُ الفَتِيَّة هَبتْ
فِي صُفوفٍ فَتِيَّة لِلذيَادِ
رَجَلٌ مَاتَ مُخْلِفاً مِنْهُ جِيلا
رَابَطَ الجَأْشِ غَيْرَ سَهْلِ المَقَادِ
إِنْ دَعَاهُ الحِفَاظُ أَقْبَلَ غِلْما
ن سِرَاعٌ مِنَ القُرَى وَالبَوَادِي
أَحْدَثُوا فِي البِلاَدِ عَهْدَ لَجَاجٍ
فِي تَقَاضِي حُقُوقِهَا وَعِنَادِ
عَهْدُ نُورٍ مِنَ الحِفَاظِ وَنَارٍ
بَعْدَ طُولِ الخُمُودِ وَالإِخْمَادِ
اتَخِذَتْ عَبْقَرِيَّة الشِّعرِ فِيهِ
سُلَّماً لِلعُرُوجِ وَالإِصْعَادِ
أَبْلَغَتْ حَافِظاً مِنَ الحَظِّ أَوْجاً
زَادَ مِنْهُ العَلْيَاءَ كًلَّ مَزَادِ
مَنْ رَأَى الشَّاعِرَ المُفَوَّةَ يَوْماً
وَحَوَالَيْهِ أُمَّة فِي احْتِشَادِ
مُوفِياً مِنْ مِنَصَّة القَوْلِ يَرْنُو
بِاتَّئادٍ وَلَحْظُهُ فِي اتِّقادِ
وَاسِعَ المَنْكِبَيْنِ مُنْفَرِجَ الحُ
قْوَيْنِ يَخْطُو خُطَاهُ كَالمُتَهَادِي
بَاسِماً أَوْ مُقَطِّباً عَنْ مُحَيَّا
بَارِزِ العَارِضَيْنِ فَوْقَ الهَادِي
عَزَّ مِنْهُ العِذَارُ إِلاَّ تَفَارِ
يقَ خِفافاً فِي الوَجْنَتَيْنِ بَدَادِ
يُنْشِدُ الحَفْلَ فَاتِناً كُلَّ لُبٍ
بِبَدِيعِ الإِيمَاءِ والإِنْشَادِ
وَبِشِعْرٍ لاَ يُطْرَفُ الجَفْنُ فِيهِ
صَادِرٍ عَنْ حَمِيَّة وَاعْتقَادِ
مَنْ رَأَى حَافِظاً نَذِيراً بَشِيراً
جَائِلاً صَائِلاً بِغَيْرِ اتِّئادِ
غَرِداً كَالهَزَارِ آنَاً وَآناً
حَرِداً كَالخِضِمِّ ذِي الإِزْبَادِ
يَنْبِرُ النَّبرَةَ العَزُوفَ فَمَا تُ
سْمَعُ إِلاَّ أَصْدَاؤُهَا فِي الوَادِي
وَكَأَنَّ الأَثِيرَ يَحْمِلُ مِنْهَا
كَهْرَبَاءً تَهُزُّ كُلَّ فُؤَادِ
فَهْيَ عِزٌّ لِلأَرْيَحِيِّ المُفَادِي
وَهْيَ ذُلٌّ لِلخَائِسِ المُتَفَادِي
وَهْيَ خَفْقُ اللِّوَاءِ يَحْدُوهُ مِنْ إِي
قَاعِ أَبْطَالِهِ إِلى المَجْدِ حَادِي
ذَاكَ أَنَّ الرُّوحَ المُرَدَّدَ فِيهَا
رُوحُ شَعْبٍ وَالصَّوْتَ صَوْتُ بِلاَدِ
أَيُّها الرَّاحِلُ الَّذِي مَلأَ العَصْ
رَ بِآثَارِهِ الرَّغَابِ الجِيَادِ
أَعْجَزَتْنِي قَبْلَ التَّمامِ القَوَافِي
وَالقَوَافِي تَضَنُّ بِالإِمْدَادِ
قَدْكَ مِنْهَا بَيَانُ مَفْخَرَةٍ وَاعْ
ذِرْ قُصُوراً بِهَا عَنِ التَّعدَادِ
بِتْ قَرِيراً فإِنَّ ذِكْرَاكَ فِينَا
أَجْدَرُ الذِّكْرَيَاتِ بِالإِخْلاَدِ
