هَلْ آيَةٌ في السِّلْمِ وَالْحَرْبِ
تُعْدِلُ نَشْرَ الْعِلْمِ في الشَّعْبِ
Is there any sign in peace or war
That equals spreading knowledge amongst the people?
فَإِنَّ مِنْ مُعْجِزِهِ كُلَّ مَا
نُكْبِرُهُ في الشَّرْقِ وَالغَرْبِ
For all we extol it in East and West
Are but miracles from it, each and every one
يَا نُصَرَاءَ الْعِلْمِ شُكْرُ النُّهَى
لَكُمْ كَشُكْرِ الرَّوْضِ لِلسُّحُبِ
O you who support knowledge, gratitude to guidance
Is like the meadow’s gratitude for clouds
مِصْرُ تُحَيِّيكُمْ وَتُثْنِي عَلَى
كُلِّ جَوَادٍ مَاجِدٍ نَدْبِ
Egypt salutes you and praises
Every generous, glorious volunteer
تُثْنِي وَتَرْعَى بِعُيُونِ الرِّضَا
جُهْدَ الرِّجَالِ الصُّبُرِ الْغُلْبِ
It praises and nurtures with eyes of contentment
The efforts of men, patience and triumph
مِصْرُ الَّتِي فِيهَا الْهُدَى وَالنَّدَى
يَسْتَبِقَانِ المَجْدَ مِنْ قُرْبِ
Egypt where guidance and freshness
Vie to attain glory from nearby
تُعْطِي النُّهَى بِالْعَذْبِ مِنْ نِيلِهَا
حَظَّ الثَّرَى مِنْ نِيلِهَا الْعَذْبِ
It gives advice with the sweetness of its Nile
As the earth gains sweetness from its Nile
وتَحْفَظُ الْحُسْنَى لأَرْبَابِهَا
في حَاضِرِ الْوَقْتِ وَفِي الْعَقْبِ
And preserves goodness for its people
In the present time and in future
تَكَامَلِي يَا دَارَ عِلْمٍ غَدَتْ
لِكُلِّ فَضْلٍ مَرْكَزَ الْقُطْبِ
My completeness, O land of knowledge you have become
The center of every virtue
كُلِّيَّةٌ في كُلِّ جُزْءٍ بِهَا
كَنْزٌ مِنَ العِرْفَانِ لِلُّبِّ
A college in every part where
A treasure of wisdom for those who seek
تُعِدُّ فِتْيَانَاً يُبَاهَى بِهِمْ
في الحَقِّ وَالآدَابِ وَالطِّبِّ
It prepares youths to boast of
In truth, morals, and medicine
مَدْرَسَةٌ يُدْرِكُ طُلاَّبُهَا
غَايَةَ مَا رَامُوا مِنَ الطِّلْبِ
A school whose students attain
The height of what they sought in knowledge
مَن أَمرُهُ عُسْرُ وَمَنْ أَمْرُهُ
يُسْرٌ نَزِيلاَهَا عَلَى الرُّحْبِ
He whose state is hardship and he whose state
Is ease find lodging in itsexpanse
تَخْدُمُ كُلاًّ مِنهُمَا خَدْمَةً
رَاضِيَةً لِلْعَبْدِ وَالرَّبِّ
It serves both with service
Pleasing to servant and Lord
تَبُثُّ في العَقلِ نَشَاطَ المُنَى
وَتَبْعَثُ النَّجْدَةَ فِي القَلْبِ
It implants vitality of purpose in the mind
And inspires excellence in the heart
لِلشَّعْبِ نَفعٌ جِدُّ نَفْعٍ بِهَا
كَفَاؤُهُ لَيسَ مِنَ اللِّعْبِ
Great benefit, truly beneficial it is
For the people, not trivial
وَالشَّعْبُ مَا زَالَ بَنُوهُ لَنَا
طَلِعَةً في المَطْلِعِ الصَّعْبِ
And the people - their children remain
A promising generation in adversity
أَتْعَبَ قُوَّامٍ بِمَجدِ الحِمَى
في سَعَةِ العَيْشِ وَفِي الكَرْبِ
It exhausted the efforts of patriots
In prosperity and in hardship
مَهْمَا يُعِنْهُمْ مُوسِرُو قَوْمِهِمْ
فَالفَضْلُ في جَانِبِهِمْ مُرْبِي
However much the wealthy of a people assist them
The credit is on their side, nurturing
لَكِنَّنَا في زَمَنِ حَائِرٍ
أُخْطِيءَ فيهِ مَوْضِعُ العُجْبِ
But we are in a confused time
Where misplaced is the object of pride
فَأَوْجَبَ الشُّكْرَ لأَدْنَى النَّدَى
مَا جَعَلَ الفَقْرَ مِنَ الذَّنْبِ
It made gratitude due for the slightest freshness
Which deemed poverty a sin
أَوْلَى تَلاَقِي كُلِّ صَدْعٍ بَدَا
مِنْ جَانِبِ الْجُمْهُورِ بِالرَّأْبِ
The mending of every crack that appeared
From the public's side takes priority
فَإِنَّ مَنْ صَانَ أَسَاساً وَهَي
صَانَ حِمىً مِنْ سَييِّءِ الغِبِّ
For he who secures a foundation that is shaking
Secures a sanctuary from terrible stupidity
وَالشَّعبُ إِنْ طَالَ مَدَى جَهْلِهِ
بَدَتْ عَلَيْهِ نُقْطَةُ الشَّغْبِ
And if the people's ignorance stretches long
The point of discontent appears in them
أَبْهَجْ بِهَا لَيْلَةَ أُنْسٍ زَهَتْ
مُضَاءَةً بِالسَّادَةِ الشُّهْبِ
With it light up a night of intimacy that shone
Illuminated by venerable elders
بُورِكَ فِي دَاعٍ إِلَيْهَا وَفِي
سَاعٍ إلى الإِحْسَانِ عَنْ حُبِّ
Blessings upon one who calls to it and upon
One who strives for benevolence out of love
