1. غَلَبَ المَوْتُ فَالْحَيَاةُ ثَكُولُ

    مَا خَلاَ مِنْكَ قَلْبُهَا المَشْغُولُ

    Death has prevailed, so life has become transient

    Except for the heart preoccupied with you

  2. فِي الْعُبَابِ الْعرِيضِ مِنْهَا خُفُوقٌ

    مَوْجُهُ آخِرَ المَدَى يَسْتَطِيلُ

    In its vast expanse, there are gaps

    Its waves lengthen to the farthest horizon

  3. وَإِلَى الضَّعْفِ قُوَّةُ الْبَأْسِ آلَتْ

    بَعْدَ أَنْ نَاصَرَتْهُ فَهْيَ خَذُولُ

    Power diminished to weakness

    After it had supported him, so it became failing

  4. سَادَ فِي مَوْضِعِ الحَرَاكِ سُكونٌ

    عَادَ فِيهِ بِالخَيْبَةِ التَّأْمِيلُ

    Calmness prevailed where there was commotion

    In it, hope turned into disappointment

  5. وَتَوَارَتْ فِي الْغَيْبِ زُهْرُ المَعَالِي

    وَتَدَاعَى التَّشْيِيدُ وَالتَّأْثيلُ

    The flowers of ideals disappeared into the unknown

    And construction and buttressing collapsed

  6. أَسَفاً أَنْ يَبِيتَ مُغْتَمَداً فِي الترْ

    بِ سَيْفُ العَزِيمَةِ المَسْلولُ

    What a pity, the sword of determination should spend the night

    In the scabbard, deactivated

  7. وَإِذَا مَا قَضَى هُمَامٌ وَإِنْ طَا

    لَتْ سِنُوهُ فَفِي الرَّدَى تَعْجِيلُ

    Whenever an ardent soul perishes, even if

    Its years are long, demise hastens

  8. مِصْرُ تَبْكِيكَ وَالشَّآمُ جَزُوعٌ

    لَيْسَ بِدْعاً مَا الرَّاحِلُونَ شُكُولُ

    Egypt cries for you and Syria grieves

    What the departing ones complain of is no false claim

  9. بَيْنَ مَيْتَيْنِ مِنْ أُولِي الْيُسْرِ

    قَدْ يَبْلُغُ أَقْصَى غَايَاتِهِ التَّفْضِيلُ

    Between two deaths, one of luxury and one of misery

    Exaltation may reach its utmost extent

  10. ذَاكَ يَمْضِي وَلاَ يُحَيَّى وَهَذَا

    لَيْسَ يَكْفِي مُؤَبِّنِيهِ العَوِيلُ

    One passes away with no farewell, while for the other

    The wailing of the mourners is not enough

  11. أَعَجِيبٌ وَأَنْتَ نَادِرَةُ القَطْرَيْنِ

    أَنَّ النفُوسَ حُزْناً تَسِيلُ

    How wondrous you are, unique among the two valleys

    That even souls should grieve and pour down in streams

  12. هُوَ أَمْرٌ لِمَنْ بَكَى فِيهِ عُذْرٌ

    إِنَّمَا الصَّبْرُ فِي سِوَاهُ جَمِيلُ

    There is an excuse for one who mourns him

    But patience for another is more fitting

  13. ضَرَبَ الضَّربَةَ الَّتِي هَوَّنَتْ

    كُلَّ شَكَاةٍ وَأَخْرَسَتْ مَنْ يَقُولُ

    He struck a blow that stifled all complaints

    And silenced whoever would speak

  14. فَلْيَدرْ فِي مَدَارِهِ الفِكْرُ حَيْرَا

    نَ وَيجْمدْ بِالنَّاظِرينَ الذُّهولُ

    So thoughts roam in confusion

    And those who look on are paralyzed in awe

  15. أَي نَوْحٍ يَفِي بِحَقِّ امْرِيءٍ كَا

    نَ عَلَيْهِ لأُمَّةٍ تَعْوِيلُ

    What elegy suffices the right of a man

    Who was relied upon by a whole nation?

  16. أَرَأَيْتُمْ سَيْرَ السَّرَاةِ بِتَابو

    تٍ عَلَيْهِ عَمِيدُهمْ مَحْمولُ

    Have you seen the walk of the caravan, the bier

    Borne by dignitaries, upon which their chief lies

  17. وَاحْتِمَالِ الْعفَاةِ نَعْشَ أَبِيهِمْ

    موشِكاً أَنْ يَسْعَى بِهِ التَّقْبِيلُ

    And the carrying of the father's coffin by nfollows

    Who are about to kiss it in intense grief?

  18. مَا دَهَى المَحْمَدَاتِ يَوْمَ ثَوَى

    بِالْقَاعِ ذَاكَ المُيَمَّمُ المَسْؤُولُ

    No lofty attributes were declared on the day

    That trusted leader was laid in the ground

  19. أَصْبَحَ الثَّغْرُ فِيهِ بَعْدَ ابْتِسَامٍ

    وَهْوَ قَلْبٌ إِلى الأَسَىَ مَوْكولُ

    The next morning, his grin had turned

    While his heart was predisposed to sorrow

  20. وَجَرَى النِّيلُ لاَ يُحَارِيهِ بَعْدَ

    اليَوْمِ فِي فَيْضِهِ أَخُوهُ النَّيلُ

    The Nile flowed no longer competing

    With its brother Nile in abundance after that day

  21. يَا سَمِيِّي وَهَكَذَا كُنْتَ تَدْعُو

    نِي وَأَدْعُوكَ وَالْكَرِيمُ وَصولُ

    O namesake, that is how you used to call me

    And I would call you, for the noble one fulfills

  22. كُلُّ وُدٍ يَدُولُ لَكِنَّ وُدِّي

    لَكَ مَا دُمْتُ ثَابِتٌ لاَ يَدُولُ

    Every affection shifts, but my affection

    For you remains firm, it does not waver

  23. أَنَا مَنْ إِنْ دَعَتْ إِليْكَ حُقُوقٌ

    مَا تَوَانَى وَإِنَّهُ لَعَلِيلُ

    I am the one who, if obligations called you,

    Would not hesitate, though overwhelmed and powerless

  24. وَقَد وَفَدْنَا وَهَؤُلاَءِ هُمُ الصَّحْبُ

    وَهَذَا النَّادِي فَايْنَ خَلِيلُ

    We have come on pilgrimage, and here are the comrades

    But where is the dear friend?

  25. أَيْنَ تِلْكَ الشَّمَائِلُ البَارِعاتُ الظْرفِ

    أَيْنَ الحَدِيثُ وَهْوَ الشَّمُولُ

    Where are those refined, graceful qualities?

    Where is the all-encompassing discourse?

  26. أَيْنَ تِلْكَ الأْلطَافُ وَالشِّيَمُ الحُسْنَى

    جَلَتْهَا وَسَلْسَلَتْهَا الأُصُولُ

    Where are those kindnesses and refined morals

    Made pure and rendered by its origins?

  27. أَيْنَ ذَاكَ البَهَاءُ وَالطَّلْعَةُ الْغَرَّا

    ءُ وَالرَّوْنَقُ الَّذِي لاَ يَحُولُ

    Where is that brilliance, radiance

    And splendor that does not diminish?

  28. أَيْنَ مَنْ فِي أَسِرَّةِ الوَجْهِ مِنْهُ

    لِمَعَانِي فُؤَادِهِ تَمْثِيلُ

    Where is he whose face betrays

    The meanings of his heart through expression?

  29. يَلْبسُ اللِّبْسَةَ البَدِيعَةَ لاَ

    يخْتَالُ أَمَّا مَكَانَها فَيْخِيلُ

    Wearing the beautiful gown, he does not pretend

    But where it belongs, it seems most fitting

  30. زَاهِياً عِزَّةً وَفِي الحقِّ أَنْ يَعْتَزَّ

    مَنْ تَقْصُرُ الوَرَى وَيطُولُ

    Exalted in honor, and rightfully proud

    Is one whom people fall short of in status

  31. مَالَتِ السِّنُّ بِاللِّدَاتِ وَما كَا

    نَ سِوَى السَّمْهَرِيِّ حِين يَمِيلُ

    Old age inclined with maturity though he remained

    None other than the internally youthful

  32. صَارَ شَيْخا وَفِي العُيُونِ فَتًى

    غَضٌّ يُرَى بِالظُّنُونِ فِيهِ ذُبُولُ

    He became aged, yet in the eyes a sprightly

    Young man whom decline was falsely presumed of

  33. طَالَ عَدُّ السِّنِينَ لَكِنَّهُ ظَلَّ

    وَمَا فِي حَالٍ لَهُ تَبْدِيلُ

    The years elapsed, but he remained

    In a state for which there was no substitute

  34. عَزْمُهُ عَزْمُهُ فَإِزْماعُهُ الإِنْفَاذُ

    وَالبَدْءُ بِالمَسِيرِ الوُصُولُ

    His resolve was his resolve, so his intention was fulfillment

    And embarking upon the journey to reach the destination

  35. كُلَّ يَوْمٍ لَهُ يُجَددُ سُولٌ

    فِي المَعَالِي وَلاَ يُخَيَّبُ سُولُ

    Each day, he renews his ambitions

    At the peak, which no ambition fails to achieve

  36. يَبْلُغُ القَصْدَ بِالمُحَاوَلَةِ المُثْلَى

    وَمِنْ دُونِهِ صِعَابٌ تَحُولُ

    He accomplishes his purpose through ideal exertion

    While without it, there are formidable obstacles

  37. يَجِدُ الحَلَّ فِي المَعاضِلِ مَيْسُو

    راً وقَدْ أَعْيَتِ الثِّقَاتِ الحُلُولُ

    How often in struggle, he stood like a lion

    Fearless, with blood dripping from his canines

  38. كَمْ لَهُ فِي النِّضَالِ وَقْفَةُ لَيْثٍ

    بَاءَ مِنْهَا وخَضْمُهُ مَنْضُولُ

    Its day was its day, and in it, good fortune had

    Precious moments of splendor and treasures

  39. يَومُهَا يوْمُهَا وَلِلسَّعْدِ فِيهِ

    غُرَرٌ ذَاتُ رَوْعَةٍ وَحُجُولُ

    Tell of kindness from a friend, on a day when

    A friend cannot recognize friend

  40. وَعَنِ البِرِّ مِنْ خَلِيلٍ فَحَدِّثْ

    يَوْمَ لاَ يَعْرِفُ الخَلِيلَ الخَلِيلُ

    Tell of gentleness toward the neighbor, and of

    Supporting the orphaned foreigner who seeks protection

  41. وَعَنِ الرِّفْقِ بِالحَرِيبِ وَعَنْ عَوْ

    لِ اليَتِيمِ الغَرِيبِ فِيمَنْ يَعُولُ

    Tell of perseverance in its proper places, until

    What is improbable becomes possible

  42. وَعَنِ الدَّأْبِ فِي مُوَاطِنِهِ حَتَّى

    لَيغْدُو فِي المُمْكِنِ المُسْتَحِيلُ

    Wealth necessitates charity, so one who gives

    Is virtuous while the withholders are wicked

  43. تِلكَ آياتُ فَضْلِهِ إِذْ لَهُ

    التَّقْدِيمُ بَيْنَ الرِّجَالِ وَالتَّبْجِيلُ

    Falsehood is invalid; the fool remains a fool

    Despite his silver coins, and the ignorant remains ignorant

  44. وَالوَجَاهَاتُ لاَ تَكُونُ وَجَاهَا

    تٍ صِحَاحاً حَتَّى يَقُومَ الدَّلِيلُ

    To seek undue veneration is a wrong

    That deserves stern punishment

  45. هَلْ سِجِلٌّ لِلْفَخْرِ إِلاَّ وَفِيهِ

    لاسْمِهِ فِي افْتِتَاحِهِ تَسْجِيلُ

    Who corrupts order and provokes tyranny

    Is truly the miserly one

  46. منَحَتهُ المُلُوكُ أَلقَابَهَا

    العُلْيَا وَفِي قَدْرِهِ لَهَا تَأْهِيلُ

    The most despicable nation is that in which

    The destitute pauper is given excuses

  47. مِنَحٌ كُرِّرَتْ فَسَرَّتْ كَمَا كُرِّ

    رَ فِي المَسْمَعِ النَّشِيدُ الجَمِيلُ

    It has been said that the tailor seeks praise in return

    This undermines benevolence

  48. أَيُّ مَجْدٍ لِمِثْلِهِ فَوْقَ هَذَا

    بَيْنَ قَوْمٍ كَقَوْمِهِ مَأْمُولُ

    Every act of charity has its beauty

    And best if the good deed remains unknown

  49. أَدْرَكَ المُنْتَهَى وَمَنْزِلَتَاهُ

    شَرَفٌ بَاذِخٌ وَجَاهٌ أَثِيلُ

    But gratitude is required, and to misconstrue

    Its meaning is corruption

  50. مَادِدِ الأُفْقَ أَيهَا البَحْرُ وَاسْطَعْ

    أَيُّهَا البَدْرُ وَاسْتَفِضْ يَا نِيلُ

    Has it not been affirmed that in every age

    A benefactor warns people while unknown?

  51. وَاعْتَزِزْ أَيَّهَا الغَمَامُ المُعَلَّى

    وَاهْتَزِزْ أَيُّهَا الحُسَامُ الصَّقيلُ

    Plug up whatever you miss of provisions, and prevent

    A free man's dignity from being violated

  52. كُلُّ شَيءٍ يُزْهى بِآيَاتِهِ الحُسْنَى

    فَكَيفَ المُخَيَّرُ المَسؤُولُ

    Treat the wound of the poor person, wipe his brow

    I will suffice, thankfully, as guarantor

  53. طَرَبٌ أَنَّكَ الهُمَامُ المُرَجَّى

    نَشْوَةٌ أَنَّكَ القَؤولَ الفَعُولُ

    God has required praise from His servant

    So what would the reluctant say as objection?

  54. بَعْضُ هَذَا وَلاِبْنِ آدَمَ أَنْ يَغْتَرَّ

    مَا الشَّأْنُ وَهْو هَذَا ضَئِيلُ

    Why the blowing of horns by angels

    And the chanting of praises and hymns?

  55. لَكِنِ النْفسُ آثَرَتْ لَكَ أُنْساً

    فِي السَّجَايَا لَهَا بِهِ تَكْمِيلُ

    Does the Creator of creation belong to those

    Who takes pipe and timbrel music lightly?

  56. فَتَوَاضَعْ للهِ شُكْراً عَلَى أَنَّكَ

    فَرْدٌ فِي الجِيلِ يَفْدِيهِ جِيلُ

    A law set by Him is meant to guide people

    While making it up is misguidance

  57. وَعَلَى أَنَّ جَوهَرَ الأُنْسِ لَمَّا

    حَلَّ فِي الإِنْسِ كَانَ فِيكَ الحُلُولُ

    Return to God, O dear friend, for objection

    Does not diminish gratitude in His view

  58. كُلُّ دِينٍ قِوَامُهُ بِرَسُولٍ

    وَلِكُلٍ مِنَ السَّجَايَا رَسُولُ

    You have been replaced by death with eternity

    In bliss and the love of an excellent substitute

  59. أَنْتَ أَنْتَ النَّبِيلُ لاَ يَدَّعِي مَا

    لَيْسَ فِيهِ مَا كُلُّ مُثْرٍ نَيِبلُ

    So console, O nation that has lost

    Its cheerful, esteemed leader

  60. أَنْتَ فِي كُلِّ حَلْبَةٍ صَاحِبُ السَّبْقِ

    وَقَدْ تَعْرِفُ الكُمَاةَ الخُبُولُ

    And console, O best wife, aggrieved

    For the remainder of her life without the companion

  61. فِي مَدَى جُودِكَ الصَّوَافِنُ تَجْرِي

    وَثَنَاءٌ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهَا الصَّهِيلُ

    And console, O you two who have lost the best company

    For after him, you have a lasting future

  62. إِنَّ فِي صَهْوَةِ الجِيَادِ لَعِزّاً

    صَائِناً لِلنُّفُوسِ مِمَّا يُذِيلُ

    And console, O friends, for a brother you promoted

    Who was an excellent comrade

  63. مَنْصِبٌ حُفَّ بِالمَخَاطِرِ لَكِنْ

    قَلَّمَا مُسْتَقِلُّهُ يَسْتَقِيلُ

    And upon you be peace at dusk and mercy

    That pours down like pouring rain

  64. هَاضَ عَظْمِي وَمَا تَرِحْتُ عَلَى العِلاَّ

    تِ مُنْذُ الصِّبَا إِلَيْهِ أَمِيلُ

    If the living lasted for merit

    You would have remained, but everything mortal perishes

  65. يَا أَخَاً الرَّأْيِ لاَ يَطِيشُ إِذَا طَا

    شَ لِحِرْصٍ فِي النَّفْسِ رَأْيٌ أَصِيلُ

  66. مَا اتْخَذْتَ الثَّرَاءَ إِلاَّ سَبِيلاً

    لِدِرَاكِ العُلَى وَنِعْمَ السَّبِيلُ

  67. لاَ كَرَهْطٍ فِي زَعْمِهِمْ أَنَّ أَسْمَى

    غَايَةٍ لِلْفَتَى هيَ التَّموِيلُ

  68. لُعِن المالُ أَوْ يُكَفِّرَ عَنْهُ

    سَبْبُ مَنْ يقْتَنِيهِ وَالتَّنْويِلُ

  69. كَيْف بِالثْرْوةِ ابتَنَاها لِرهطٍ

    شُحُّهُم والخِدَاعُ والتَّطْفِيلُ

  70. نَكبةُ الشَّرْقِ مُحْدِثونَ حَقِيقو

    نَ بِأَنْ تَرجَح الدّبى وَيَشِيلُو

  71. كُل جَمْعٍ مِنْهُمُ فِدى وَاحِدٍ

    يَنْفَعُ وَالفَضْلُ أَيْنَ مِنْهُ الفُضُولُ

  72. لَيْتَ قَومِي لَهُمْ قلُوبٌ جرِيئَا

    تٌ عَلَى ما تَدْعُو إِلَيهِ العُقُولُ

  73. لَمْ يكُونُوا إِذَنْ وَأَسقَطهُمْ أَرْ

    فَعُهمْ وَالسمُوُّ فِيهِم سُفولُ

  74. وَغَرِيبُ الأَلقَابِ فِيهِم كَثِيرٌ

    وَرحِيبُ الجَنَابِ فِيهِم قَلِيلُ

  75. وَالأجَلُّ الأجَلُّ مِنْهُم زَرِيٌّ

    وَالأعَزُّ الأعزُّ مِنهُم ذَلِيلُ

  76. قَد مَضَى لاَ أَعادَهُ اللهُ عصْرٌ

    عُبِدَت فِيهِ لِلنُّضَّارِ العُجُولُ

  77. خصَّ بِالقَدْرِ صَاحِبُ الوَفْرِ حَتَّى

    وَهْوَ لِلصْخْرِ بِالجَفَاف مَثيلُ

  78. أَخَذَ النَّاسُ بِالتَّيَقُّظِ لِلوَا

    جِبِ فَلْيَتَّعِظْ وَيصْحُ الغَفُولُ

  79. تَقْتَضِي الثَّرْوَةُ الزَّكَاةَ فَمَنْ جَا

    دَ فَرَأْسٌ وَالمُمْسِكُونَ ذُيُولُ

  80. بَطَلَ الزورُ فَالغَبِيُّ غَبِيٌّ

    رَغْمَ نَقْدَيهِ وَالجَهُولُ جَهُولُ

  81. وَاخْتِلاَسُ التَّبْجِيلِ فِي غَيْرِ شَيءٍ

    عَادَ ذَنْباً لَهٍ عِقَابٌ ثَقِيلُ

  82. إِنَّ مَن أَفْسَدَ النِّظَامَ وَمَنْ ها

    جَ عَلَيْهِ الطَّغَامَ لَهُوَ البَخِيلُ

  83. وَأَحطُّ الشُّعُوبِ ذَاكَ الَّذِي

    يُعْذَرُ فِيهِ المُقَتِّرُ المَرْذُولُ

  84. قِيلَ خَيَّاطُ يَبْتَغِي الحَمْدَ أَجْراً

    آفَةُ المَأْثُرَاتِ هَذَا القِيلُ

  85. كلُّ نَوْعٍ مِنَ العَطَاءِ لَهُ حُسْنٌ

    وَخَيْرٌ أَلاَّ يُذَاعَ الجَميلُ

  86. لَكِنِ الشُّكْرُ وَاجِبٌ وَفَسَادٌ

    فِي مَعَانِيهِ ذَلِكَ التَّأوِيلُ

  87. أَوَ مَا صَحَّ أَنْ فِي كُلِّ عَصرٍ

    أَنْذَرَ النَّاسِ مُحْسِنٌ مَجْهُولُ

  88. سُدَّ مَا اسطَعْتَ مِنْ مَفَاقِرَ وامْنَعْ

    عِرْضَ حُرٍّ سِتَارُهُ مَسْدُولُ

  89. وأْسُ جُرْحِ المِسْكِينِ وَامْسَحْ قَذَاهُ

    أَنَا بِالحَمْدِ مَا اشْتَهَيْتَ كَفِيلُ

  90. قَدْ تَقَاضَى اللهُ الثْنَاءَ مِنَ

    العَبْدِ فَمَاذَا يَقُولُ فِيهِ العَذُولُ

  91. وَلِمَاذَا نَفْخ المَلاَئِكِ فِي الصُّو

    رِ وَفِيمَ التَّسْبِيحُ وَالتَّرْتِيلُ

  92. أَتُرَى كَانَ خَالِقُ الخَلْقِ مِمَّنْ

    يَسْتَخِفُّ التَّزْمِيرُ وَالتَّطْبِيلُ

  93. سُنَّةُ سنَّهَا يُرِيدُ هُدَى الخَلْقِ

    بِهَا وَاخْتِلاقُهَا تَضلِيلُ

  94. عُدْ إِلى اللهِ يَا خَلِيلُ فَمَا

    يَنْتَقِصُ الشُّكْرَ عِنْدَه تَعْلِيلُ

  95. قَدْ تَبَدَّلَتَ بِالفَنَاءِ خُلُوداً

    فِي نَعِيمٍ وَحُبَّ ذَاكَ البَدِيلُ

  96. فَعَزَاءً يَا أُمَّةً غَابَ عَنْهَا

    وَجْهُهَا السَّمْحُ وَالرَّئِيسُ الجَلِيلُ

  97. وَعَزَاءً يَا خَيْرَ زَوْجٍ شَجَاهَا

    بَاقِيَ العُمْرِ أَنْ يَبِينَ الخَلِيلُ

  98. وَعَزَاءً يَا فَاقِدَيْ خَيْرَ صِنْوٍ

    لَكُمَا بَعْدَهُ البَقَاءُ الطَّوِيلُ

  99. وَعَزَاءً يَا صَحْبَهُ فِي أَخٍ قَدَّ

    مْتُمُوهُ وَكَانَ نَعْمَ الزَّمِيلُ

  100. وعَلَيْكَ السَّلاَمُ فِي الرَّمْسِ وَالرَّ

    حْمَةُ يَهْمِي بِهَا سَحَابٌ هَطِولُ

  101. لَوْ تَدُومْ الأحْيَاءُ مِنْ أَجْلِ فَضْلٍ

    دُمْتَ لَكِنْ كُلُّ حَيٍّ يَزُولُ
