Was it at dawn our separation came,

So I lost its planet in the trace?

Or at noon when it breathed its last

Of what it breathed, faded of flowers?

Or in the noon stillness, so it melted

Like the lone rain drop drank the earth?

    Or at dusk, setting together,

For sun and soul, here and beyond?

Or in the dark did it grow darker,

A secret I rose in, to secret?

Or in the moonshine blended with you

Sadness of moon made of you?

I grieved for your youth. But what grief

Can match the gravity of this matter?

I grieved you never reached a peak

Or purpose in your span of life.

I grieved you were accused though innocent,

    By a ruthless accuser excused.

So you lived a while tormented, not

Knowing why, and you died not knowing

Why you never lingered long enough

For rays of splendid mind to shine,

Long enough for deeds of grace and good

To form a product and design.

Long enough to leave behind a child

To be hoped for, for bane and boon.

Why did you come from nothingness?

Why did you linger in the tomb?

If you went and left behind but sadness

    And the bitterness of memory,

Tell your mother that your spirit lives

    In blissful gardens of eternity.
